Dealing with humor is one of the hardest challenges when dubbing TV shows or subtitling them. If we focus on one of the most common elements throughout humor is developed, cultural references, we find that they play a crucial role in this difficulty, since a specific cultural element is not a universal truth nor is it shared by the global audience. In most cases, they lack equivalences and may vary according to time, place, and context where they are located…Hence they can be interpreted and treated in more than one manner depending on the target language and the target society. In addition, humor translation has to deal with many dimensions of language, not only the purely linguistic but also cultural and pragmatic ones since the translator has a goal: The audience receiving the humorous element in the most optimal way to cause the greatest laughter. In this work, I analyze the dubbing and subtitling of the numerous cultural references that appeared in the iconic sitcom Friends, identifying if over the years the techniques and strategies applied to translate cultural elements evolved according to the evolution of American society or if on the contrary, the way they were translated at the end of the series remains the same than at the beginning. A secondary objective focuses on reviewing if these solutions provided until now were also the most suitable and if they worked in humoristic terms. Therefore, this research aims to be a descriptive and contrastive analysis of the Audiovisual Translation of humor in sitcoms, but along the years, following the path observed in the TV Show Friends.en
