This work first describes the essential features of group psychodynamic psychotherapy. Its foundation is based in the use of, at least, some basic ideas and concepts ofpsychoanalysis and specific intervention techniques, as well as in the creation of an environment conducive to promoting self-knowledge, reflection and changes in behavior –in a broad sense–, both internal and external. Secondly, the fundamental principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy in general are made explicit, the concepts that underlie this conception and the objectives towards which it is directed, –the psychological wellbeing of people, the improvement of interpersonal relationships and the development and growth of the individual– which are the elements that guide the clinical practice of this psychotherapeutic approach. And finally, the different intervention techniques that are used in a similar way both in individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and in group psychodynamic psychotherapy are listed and discussed. Both “interpretative” and “support” interventions are included, as well as reference is made to relevant issues in this type of psychotherapy such as the interrelationship between the patient and the psychotherapist, the therapeutic alliance and the transference processes
