Cultural competence interventions in european healthcare: a scoping review
(MDPI, 2024-05-17) María Martín, Berta de; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba; López González, María Ángeles; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1107-7121
Europe is undergoing rapid social change and is distinguished by its cultural superdiversity. Healthcare is facing an increasing need for professionals to adapt to this environment. Thus, the promotion of cultural competence in healthcare has become a priority. However, the training being developed and their suitability for the European context are not well known. The aim of this qualitative study has been to map the scientific literature in order to comprehend the current state of research on this topic. For this purpose, we conducted a systematic scoping review of the empirical publications focused on cultural competence interventions for healthcare professionals in European countries. The search was conducted in eight thematic (PsycINFO, MedLine, and PubPsych) and multidisciplinary databases (Academic Search Ultimate, E-Journals, Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science) to identify relevant publications up to 2023. Results were presented qualitatively. Out of the initial 6506 records screened, a total of 63 publications were included. Although the interventions were implemented in 23 different European countries, cultural competence interventions have not been widely adopted in Europe. Significant heterogeneity was observed in the conception and operacionalización of cultural competence models and in the implementation of the interventions. The interventions have mostly aimed at improving healthcare for minority population groups and have focused on the racial and ethnic dimensions of the individual. Future research is needed to contribute to the conceptual development of cultural competence to design programs tailored to European superdiversity. This scoping review has been registered in OSF and is available for consultation.

Occupational Stress in nursing. Multiple groupe membership from a preventive perspective
(Springer, 2019-12-20) Peña, Marta; Ramos, María Mercedes; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba
The study examines the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction, exploring the mediating role of engagement and multiple group membership in this relationship and if they could considerer them as a preventive variable of the others variables, in a sample of Spanish hospital nurses. A cross-sectional design was used, and a paper-pencil questionnaire survey with different scales to measure all the variables. To test our hypotheses, we conducted multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro for SPSS with Model 4. The main findings confirm a mediating role of engagement and multiple group membership in the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction. Nurses (N = 180) from a large public hospital in Spain participated in the study. The results extend previous findings with other populations. Multiple group membership is confirmed to increase job satisfaction and to provide personal resources for nurses facing stressful work events.

Process of retirement planning scale: Psychometric properties of the complete and short Spanish versions
(Oxford University Press, 2020-09-12) Juliana Seidl; Elaine Rabelo Neiva; Jack H Noone; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba
Workers who plan for retirement generally adjust better to this phase of life. Therefore, retirees, researchers, and practitioners benefit from the development of retirement preparation measures and interventions. The Process of Retirement Planning Scale (PRePS), originally developed in New Zealand, considers retirement planning as a multidimensional process that happens in 4 stages: representations, goals, decisions, and behaviors. This study aimed to validate the complete and short versions of the PRePS in Spanish. The translated complete version was administrated in a sample of 1,827 Spanish employees aged from 26 to 68 (M = 46.8; SD = 11.9), which was further randomly split into 3 subsamples. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that both the complete version and the short version of the scale had satisfactory psychometric properties. The complete Spanish PRePS contains 37 items, which reflects 4 dimensions: financial (10 items), lifestyle (9 items), psychosocial (8 items), and health planning (10 items) and 4 stages: representations (12 items), goals (4 items), decisions (8 items), and preparedness (13 items). The short Spanish PRePS contains 24 items. Age, gender, and general self-efficacy were significant predictors of the PRePS dimensions, offering validity evidence from the standpoint of construct nomological network. The advantages of using the PRePS for researchers, professionals, and Spanish policy makers are discussed. As this scale has already been adapted to 5 different languages—English, Turkish, Korean, Portuguese, and now Spanish—cross-national studies about retirement planning are encouraged.

Direct effect of personality traits and work engagement on job crafting: a structural model
(Elsevier, 2023-12-21) Laguía González, Ana; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba; Ricardo Filipe Da Silva Pocinho; Juan José Fernández Munoz
Research in job crafting is relevant to creating healthier organizations and is attracting increasing attention. This study contributes to identifying the predictors of job crafting from a new conceptualization that considers three dimensions, i.e., job crafting towards strength, job crafting towards interests, and job crafting towards development. On this basis, the present study aims to explore two predictors of job crafting in the personal domain, the Big Five personality traits and Work Engagement. The study sample consists of 327 Spanish employees who completed standardized questionnaires. A Multiple Indicator Multiple Cause (MIMIC) like Structural Equational Model (SEM) was applied to the data. Results showed that job crafting towards strength was significantly and positively predicted by Work Engagement (dedication and absorption) as well as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and intellect/imagination. Furthermore, job crafting towards interest was predicted by Work Engagement (absorption), extraversion, and intellect/imagination. Last, job crafting towards development was predicted by Work Engagement (dedication and absorption), agreeableness, conscientiousness, and intellect/ imagination. Vigor and neuroticism were unrelated to job-crafting dimensions. These findings can be useful for managers and organizations looking to facilitate job crafting as a means of promoting employees’ performance as well as satisfaction and well-being.

Work engagement: A meta-analysis using the job demands-resources model
(Sage Journals, 2021-12-10) Mazzetti, Greta; Robledo, Enrique; Vignoli, Michela; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba; Guglielmi, Dina; Schaufeli, Wilmar B
Although the construct of work engagement has been extensively explored, a systematic meta-analysis based on a consistent categorization of engagement antecedents, outcomes, and well-being correlates is still lacking. The results of prior research reporting 533 correlations from 113 independent samples (k = 94, n = 119,420) were coded using a meta-analytic approach. The effect size for development resources (r =.45) and personal resources (r = .48) was higher than for social resources (r = .36) and for job resources (r = .37). Among the outcomes and well-being correlates explored, the effect size was highest for job satisfaction (r = .60) and commitment (r = .63). Furthermore, moderation analysis showed that (a) concerning the occupational role, work engagement finds a low association with turnover intention among civil servants, volunteer workers, and educators; (b) collectivist cultural environments reported a greater association of feedback with engagement than individualistic environments; (c) the relationship between personal resources and engagement was stronger among workers with university degrees than workers with high school diplomas. Furthermore, the absorption dimension showed a lower effect with all variables under investigation than vigor and dedication.

Personality Correlates of Compassion: a Cross-Cultural Analysis
(Springer, 2020-07-28) Sinclair, Vanessa M.; Saklofske, Donald; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba
Objective Compassion, defined as other-oriented concern and the desire to alleviate suffering, is an emerging area of focus in the psychology of wellbeing. Compassion is linked to many positive outcomes, including stress reduction and prosocial behaviour. However, the personality traits that predict compassion have not been established. Method Canadian (N = 555, 75.8% women) and Spanish (N = 371; 60.8% women) adults ranging in age from 17 to 68 years completed the HEXACO-60 personality inventory, a trait emotional intelligence (EI) scale, and a measure of compassion for others using online survey software. Results Regression analyses found that in both samples, emotionality was the strongest predictor, accounting for over 10% of the unique variance in compassion scores. Trait EI and honesty-humility and openness also predicted compassion, while agreeableness was significant only among Canadians, suggesting cross-cultural differences in personality antecedents. It was also found that women reported more compassion than men, and Spanish participants reported more compassion than Canadians. Conclusions This study found that emotional sensitivity and emotional intelligence characterize compassionate individuals, and this was true in two distinct cultures. The findings further understanding of the personality underpinnings of compassion for others.

An application of the resource-based dynamic process model in the context of retirement planning
(Oxford University Press, 2021-04-23) Noone, Jack; Earl, Joanne; Stephens, Christine; Rafalski, Julia; Allen, Joanne; Alpass, Fiona; Topa Cantisano, Gabriela Elba
Retirement planning is a widely promoted activity to enhance wellbeing for aging populations. However, there is limited follow-up data to understand the antecedents of multi-dimensional retirement planning activities, the resources such activities produce or the explanatory mechanisms. This research draws on recent theorizing, which suggests that retirement planning may play a mediating role in explaining how pre-retirement antecedents are transformed into retirement resources. Antecedents, planning and retirement resources were examined using 3 waves of follow-up data collected in 2006, 2008, and 2014. Four hundred thirty-five people originally employed in 2008 and retired by 2014 participated in the study. Health, income, and a positive retirement attitude (T1) were the strongest predictors of retirement planning (T2), but job satisfaction and occupation also played smaller predictive roles. Financial planning (T2) predicted health, psychosocial, and financial resources in retirement (T3). However, health, lifestyle, and psychosocial planning played a minimal role in explaining retirement resources, and only financial planning demonstrated noteworthy evidence of mediation. Findings can help to inform policy decisions by identifying those at greatest risk of not planning, and to isolate the factors most likely to explain the longer-term effects of planning. Understanding which resources are predicted by different domains of planning will also help inform the targeting of interventions.
