Resumen
This chapter explores the concept of spatial segregation, which refers to the geographical concentration of individuals with similar characteristics. It discusses the relationship between social and spatial inequalities and explores how spatial structures are influenced by human behavior and also shape it. The chapter focuses on two key dimensions of segregation: socioeconomic and ethnic/racial. It covers the essential themes in segregation research, including the methods for measuring segregation (form and characteristics), the neighborhood effects (consequences), and the factors that create and sustain segregation (dynamics). It highlights the importance of measuring segregation from multiple perspectives, discusses how living in deprived or ethnically concentrated areas can impact residents’ outcomes, and highlights the value of longitudinal perspectives in understanding neighborhood dynamics. The chapter concludes by reviewing recent advancements in data collection and computational methods, providing deeper insights into the causes and effects of segregation and suggesting future research directions.
