Resumen
This work analyzes how racism generating childhood trauma is portrayed in two different experimental works authored by African American women writers in the second half of the twentieth century: “Recitatif” (1983), a short piece of fiction by Toni Morrison, and Funnyhouse of a Negro (1964), a one-act play by Adrienne Kennedy. From the perspective of trauma studies based on Cathy Caruth’s and Toni Morrison’s works, this essay examines the two works regarding their setting, characterization, point of view, and memory, paying attention to how nonconventional literary forms can convey political messages against marginalization.
