Resumen
The phenomenon of human communication is complex and difficult to define, it happens in a diversity of forms or modalities, it is context-dependent and it exemplifies a cultural testimony of speaking communities. The characteristics of communication define a particular vision or interpretation of the world, it shapes the identity of both the individual and the community it belongs to as the way we express ourselves defines who we are, how we relate with others and how we understand reality around us. Speech, or language proper, happens as sound usually in face-to-face exchanges, but meaning is sensitive to nuances expressed in a variety of forms that affect sense. Art is a major form of communication based on the visual that has raised and developed alongside spoken language. As a form of communication, it also conveys meaning, whether iconic or symbolic, and facilitates comprehension of abstract concepts. Art is an alternative that complements, arguably even completes, language for a full communicative exchange. The mechanisms of both speech and image processing are deeply related at a neurological level, a relationship that should be instrumentalized in language education.
