Resumen
The aim of this research is to study and emphasize the work of women during the First World War and its aftermath with the aid of the television series “Downton Abbey”. This paper will be focused on medical work performed by women, not only as nurses or orderlies, which was the most common duty but also as doctors or managing hospitals during the four years that the conflict lasted. The series’ second season recounts how the stately house where the family live is transformed into a convalescent home for soldiers wounded in the battlefield during the First World War. It is important to highlight that the TV series is based on actual facts, but our research will help us find out the interpretation that Julian Fellowes, its creator, gives to these facts. I will explore the nurses’ work shown on TV series and also find out about women doctors and their job related to the management of hospitals in war times. I will also analyse the treatment that the series gives to those women who tried to get out of their traditional roles in society and lead their own lives, in particular those who used education to climb up the ladder. There is a lot written about this topic and therefore I will try to show some of the different views on this issue.
