In the present work, a specific solution for the design of welded housings used in one, two and three stages speed reducers with parallel shafts and cylindrical gears, achieving a high level of automation, is proposed. The solution consists of a database of standardized and parameterized housings according to the number of stages of the reducer and the thickness of the plate, among other considerations. These housings serve as templates to feed an algorithm that has a calculation and design procedure based on recommendations collected in the specialized literature. In addition, for the calculation of stresses and strains, the algorithm incorporates finite element analysis. Then, through an iterative process, the algorithm minimizes the volume of material used in the housings, based on standardized plate thicknesses and ensuring a user-defined safety factor. The algorithm has been implemented as a plug-in in the Autodesk Inventor commercial CAD platform environment and has been verified by analytical calculations of several case studies.
