The work proposes a reflection on modernity taking Wallerstein's world-systems analysis as a perspective from which to think about our present world. It is divided into two parts. In the first, modernity is considered as a narrative term and the concept of Wallerstein's «organizational myth» is analyzed by pointing out its main presuppositions (the idea of progress) as well as its possible survival in the modernity-postmodernity debates and in the confrontation between the theory of modernization and the theory of dependence. In the second part, we analyze what the main theoretical influences in the configuration of the world-systems perspective are. Key concepts of this analysis perspective, such as «historical system» and «unidisciplinarity», are also analyzed, and the proposed alternative to the concept of «organizational myth» of modernity from the perspective of world-systems is described. Finally, the systematical characteristics from the economic, political, social, cultural and ideological point of view that would characterize modernity as a world-system are analyzed, as well as its possible future evolution.
