The fate of the inhabitants of Macael has been linked to marble since time immemorial. The destiny of the resource goes beyond local and national borders. At the end of the last century, around forty percent of the national marble was extracted in the surroundings of Macael, being Spain one of the world leaders in the market of this ornamental stone. This work analyzes the changes that have taken place in the property and in the system of access to the marble quarries of Macael since 1573, the year in which, once the Moorish uprising was quelled, the town was surveyed, until the present day. After many vicissitudes, in which the people of Macael have had to defend the property of the quarries, both against private interests and the public administration, the assets that were communal, and therefore of free access for the locals, became the property of the Town Council, which is currently also the holder of the concession for the exploitation of marble, which it leases to those who wish to extract the mineral.
