The luxury and distinction attendant upon the renovation of the domestic interiors that established the eighteenth century aristocratic home as a place of social distinction reached a zenith in the early years of Carlos IV’s reign. Peers’ princely abodes, along with the houses of high-ranking court officials and members of the diplomatic corps, exerted enormous influence in defining, accepting and disseminating models of fine taste among the nobility and upper classes. They nonetheless formed part of an even broader network of agents and actors whose artistic and commercial endeavour revolved around interior design, mapped out in this study in pursuit of a fuller understanding of the context in which the lustre of those palatial residences glowed especially brightly.
