Resumen
El artículo presenta la alternativa deweyana en el debate entre liberales y comunitaristas en torno a la autonomía versus comunidad como fuente de legitimidad. El liberalismo privilegia al individuo fragmentando el espacio público y la participación democrática, denuncian los comunitaristas. El comunitarismo subraya el bien común limitando la autonomía y el pluralismo, temen los liberales.
Dewey presenta una vía alternativa considerando al individuo y a la comunidad como resultado de las relaciones comunicativas. Su propuesta reinterpreta los derechos como guías que fortalecen las relaciones comunicativas de las que depende tanto el desarrollo de la libertad como el fortalecimiento de la comunidad.
