This study experimentally evaluates R290 as a substitute for R410A in a variable air conditioner operating with different refrigerant charges based on an exergy analysis. The experimental work was carried out following the balanced calorimeter method according to ISO-5151, in an 18000 Btu/h mini-split air conditioner. During the tests, the cooling capacity, energy consumption, pressures and temperatures of the equipment were quantified, operating with 7 charges of R410A and 5 charges of R290. Among the main results it was found that the compressor has more exergy destroyed by the refrigerant charge, due to the increase of heat in the equipment. On the other hand, when comparing refrigerants, less exergy destruction and higher exergy efficiency was observed operating with R290. However, the cooling capacity is significantly reduced in R290 compared to R410A.
