In this thesis the problem of «gender violence» is studied from an standpoint that focuses its interest in the visibility that this phenomena as reached in our society. This visibility was due to the social impact that produced the high number of cases of women murdered by their intimate partners. The ultimate goal is to understand the generating causes of this problem. The conceptual model used to answer the questions raised about the aforementioned shows that visibility is due to the impact between the information society to which we have agreed and the patriarchal culture that we have not yet left. But it also indicates that this visibility is but one of the many faces that presents the «gender violence». It is concluded that it is necessary to unravel the content of all these faces in order to address the problem as a whole. For the purpose of this study, women abused by their partners are analyzed from an specific constructionist point of view. We denominated it ―synthetic semantics constructionist approach‖. It implies to take into account involving phenomena and the context in which they occur. A context full of signs and symbols subject to various interpretations responding cultural diversity of human beings. This approach has proceeded to deconstruct the essentialist discourse that involves the assumption of «two sexes / two genders» duality and represents one of the most significant early social structure of patriarchy. This deconstruction has enabled to specify the conditions that let us to establish discursively the existence of a «battered woman profile». From a cultural perspective the issue points out to the patriarchal model of partner sexual relationship and the myth of motherhood. Both are basic factors to understand the construction of the profile. An empirical research of fourteen case studies of battered women have been studied and developed. By the same token, nine conclusions have been drawn. Amounts other things they involve causes of abuse visibility as well as answers related to the question of way many women assault cases result in death. Other issues analyzed are the incidence of family abuse networks, the relationship between alcohol consumption and abuse, and the incidence of the model of sexuality. Finally social stigma and institutional framework that represents the relations of control over citizens are considered. It is also indicated some proposals to investigate on the problem of «gender violence».
