Multiple fronts threaten the order that has governed the international system since the arrival of modernity. States, privileged entities that had structured the international society, are called into question by a myriad of transnational flows that menace to relegate them to a secondary position within the system. In this context, what is the point of addressing an ideology that appeals to something as old-fashioned as the nation? This text argues that nationalist ideologies are essential to the construction of models of contemporary legitimacy. With this aim, this dissertation will analyse the confrontation between a nationalism that pretends to legitimize a preexisting State structure –the Spanish one– and a sub-State nationalism –the Galician one– that constitutes an attempt to preserve the Galician identity. The peculiarities of the Galician case are revealing for this study: the traditional patterns of emancipation have no use here, as the Galician people respond correctly to the methodological framework of the internal colonialism. We will see then that the models of liberation proposed can give us the key to what will be the emancipation movements of this century. A century in which the dispute against the unifying economic model implies the necessary articulation between the economic struggle against neoliberalism and the identity struggle against cultural imperialism.
