Any reader who compares "meditations of Don Quixote" on July 21, 1914, date of his appearance, would have received the news of the assassination of the Archduke Francisco Fernando de Austria also a few weeks earlier. This hypothetical reader would read the work having as background the great European war. Based on this crucial fact, we try to articulate our political reading of the book, which we understand not only as an exercise in salvation from Spain, but from the whole of Europe. We start to do an extensive review that Madrid thinker is a book of Scheler, "Der genius des Krieges”, in which Ortega will hold the intimate link between estimate, politics, discord and war." Its proposal at this writing, will be that you can only be peace in Europe if you build a system of beliefs, an Ordo amoris, which serve to articulate the spiritual power disputes that are behind the war. After analyzing the ins and outs of this proposal in the second part of this article, we close with a coda where we outline the tensions evident in Ortega’s project as well as its relevance for a contemporary reader.
