In the highly globalized 21st century it is very frequent to find speech communities where more than one language is used during everyday communication. Many people have left their original community to find better opportunities, a new job or to start a new life in another community or country. They usually like to keep in touch with their own culture, but they also feel the need to communicate with the receiving community. This situation can result in a language contact situation. This TFM examines the language contact situation between the English and Spanish languages in the United States with an attempt to provide a qualitative analysis of the language use of a bilingual speech community living in Miami, Florida. We would like to know that, when they use both languages during the same conversation, whether they borrow words or phrases or, instead of borrowing, they code-switch. We will try to determine the intensity of the language contact situation, and for this, we will mainly focus on the lexical category of the borrowed words. We will also investigate what kind of code-switching they tend to use: tag-switching, intra-sentential or inter-sentential code-switching. Then, we will also try to determine the socio-pragmatic function of these code-switches. Finally, we will try to answer the question whether the members of this community use Spanglish.en
