The progress of research into the study of the stone resources exploited in the southeast of the peninsula allows us to evaluate the use of a large number of ornamental rocks which, due to their aesthetic qualities, were used as a support for representative elements of the architectural and historical-artistic heritage of the Region of Murcia. The repertoire includes well-known materials, such as the red travertines from Mula, the polychrome limestones from the Northwest Region and other stones from the Metropolitan area of Murcia. The presence in the decorative programs analysed shows the versatility achieved by these rocks from Antiquity to practically the present day. Throughout these pages, some essential characteristics are analysed in relation to the definition of their varieties, their chronological context, and functionality, for contributing to their knowledge and promote the heritage values that are specific to it.
