The Grapes of Wrath has been classified as a novel belonging to the so-called social realism, as it faithfully portrays one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the first half of the 20th century in the United States; however, the novel, due to its narrative style and symbolism, also shows affinities with the modernist movement. Its complexity allows for multiple readings and challenges a single classification. This work addresses the main analytical approaches to which it has traditionally been subjected and advocates for the ecocritical approach as particularly relevant for the analysis of the novel. It also examines how Steinbeck's philosophy and holistic thinking are reflected in the novel, as well as the impact of his narrative on American society.
