The representation of Ferdinand’s madness in The Duchess of Malfi is developed through three elements: the relationship between Ferdinand and his twin the Duchess, the metatheatrical devices that Ferdinand designs to torture her and lycanthropy. This TFG analyses these ingredients following the threat of madness that hovers over him until he is diagnosed of lycanthropy at the end of the play. The structure of the study is marked by the development of Ferdinand’s state of mind and emphasises the connection between his dual identity and his progressive transformation. The exploration of the distortion of his identity, the use of artifice, images and Ferdinand’s language give evidence of the conflict between appearance and reality in The Duchess of Malfi. Hence, madness is an instrument of exploration of this issue.en
