    Queering Gender: The New Femme Fatale in Almodóvar’s La mala educación (2004)

    It is difficult to define film genres in the post-modern cinema, as they are strongly influenced by the conventions of classic genres. Within this context the emergence of transgressive or “dissident” identities have populated such genres and particularly the creation of a modern femme fatale has become a popular and polemical character in contemporary fiction. This new transgressive identity deviates from its counterpart in classical cinema-film noir. Pedro Almodóvar’s La mala educación (2004) reveals that the modern femme fatale has become at the turn of the twenty-first century an integral part of the queer community, thus proposing a new filmic platform of queering gender for the vindication of the rights of the (“other”) stigmatized identities.

    Meu trabalho pretende explorar a situação opressiva que certos grupos minoritários como os homossexuais sofreram durante os anos setenta em Cuba. Para ilustrar este tema selecionei o filme cubano Fresa y Chocolate (1993) – dirigido por Tomás Gutiérrez Alca e Juan Carlos Tabío, baseado no conto do escritor cubano Senel Paz, El lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo – para examinar a posição do grupo de homossexuais no contexto sócio-político do período pós-revolucionário; proponho discutir o trabalho injusto aos homens marginalizados e o efeito negativo que isto representa para toda a sociedade. O filme é um protesto contra as normas opressivas, evidente não só através da voz dos personagens, como também, indiretamente, através de situações e imagens que expressam suas desgraças, ansiedades e desejos frustrados. Minha análise se centrará particularmente em como os homossexuais na Cuba pós-revolucionária tiveram que lutar contra uma sociedade arraigadamente machista e o dogmatismo político de um regime ditatorial. Em suma, Fresa y chocolate propõe uma revisão dos valores predominantes na sociedade cubana e por sua vez tenta reafirmar uma identidade nacional que inclua todos os sabores, opções e interpretações da existência humana.

    El ´arte de vivir´: Liberación textual masculina en El artista barquero o los cuatro cinco de junio

    This study aims to demonstrate that Gómez de Avellaneda´s last novel El artista barque o los cuatro de junio (1861) contains a transgressive subtext, even more sophisticated than those found in her previous novels. El artista barquero marks a final stage in the evolution of Gómez de Avellaneda´s prose works, displaying a new assurance of style and an ironic tone which combine to create a powerful and balanced gender-inflected expression of the feminine and the masculine. Familiar themes permeate this last novel, in which both male and female characters show the same will to resist the usual frustrations presented by the dominant power structures. The story is clearly feminist in motivation, and in its use of alternative mechanisms of writing. These strategies aimed at the textual liberation of the masculine are both invigorating and effective, exploring an alternative masculine identity through the male protagonist Huberto. This study demonstrates that male characterization has direct implications for feminism because it allows the narrative to condemn the negative effects of cultural norms on the lives of men and women. In turn, the strategies used destabilize the existing traditions, to show that the perpetuation of the model imposed on men (and women) by (patriarchal) society is not pre-ordained and inevitable.

    La metáfora de la libertad: el discurso del cuerpo en la literatura de Zoé Valdés

    Este estudio pretende demostrar la relación entre género, sexo y escritura en la Nada Cotidiana (1995) de la cubana Zoé Valdés (1959-). Desde el exilio y la marginación por ser mujer y escritora, la autora recurre a diferenciadas estrategias femeninas/feministas como resistencia ante cualquier tipo de represión. A través del discurso del cuerpo, la escritora explora su identidad genérico-sexual y denuncia el sistema opresor del patriarcado, restaurando su auténtica identidad. En definitiva, la escritura de Valdés y de su propia experiencia vital representa un legado promotor de cambio en la situación de la mujer: la estratégica conciencia discursiva de la voz femenina cubana y demuestra que el silencio no existe y el lenguaje del cuerpo es vehículo de libertad.
