Nevertheless, some case studies have revealed significant barriers to adopt such approach. In order to minimize the paradigm shift between conventional software engineering and software product line engineering, this paper presents a new development process where the products of a domain are made by analogy to an existing product. This paper addresses the lack of empirical evidence supporting innovations in control engineering education by proposing a methodology that works at different abstraction levels. Hence, innovations' impact on students' performance can be statistically analyzed either globally or locally by examining competencies or fine-grained indicators, respectively. The article reports the application of the methodology for evaluating an interactive simulation tool, named LCSD, on 101 students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso in Chile. According to the experimental results, LCSD is an effective free alternative to enhance the student's skills on control system analysis for our automatic control course. Also, some improvements have been identified for future LCSD versions.Publicación Scalable Hybrid Laboratories: Application in Industrial Automation(ELSEVIER, 2025-05-27) Vilches, Marco; Vargas, Héctor; Torre Cubillo, Luis de la; Heradio Gil, RubénSome of the most critical competencies that automation and control students must acquire to become capable engineers require hands-on laboratory expe- riences under conditions that closely resemble real-world work environments. However, current practical laboratories often face challenges in recreating re- alistic and scalable industrial contexts, making it difficult to develop these competencies. This article presents the development and implementation of a hybrid laboratory proposal to address these challenges. The prototype, de- signed for training automation engineers, integrates real control devices with simulated digital replicas of processes, allowing the scalability of the system to address a wide variety of industry-like scenarios. The general design, its physical and virtual implementation, the communication of its components, and the installation and operation context are detailed. Our work fills the gap in systematic methods for competency assessment in higher education. Background: Many institutions are shifting toward competency-based education, thus encouraging their educators to start evaluating their students under this paradigm. Previous research shows that structured assessment models are fundamental in guiding educators toward this adoption. Intended outcomes: An assessment model for competency-based education that is easy to adopt and use, while facilitating the application of learning analytics techniques. Application design: The new framework considerably extends a prior model we proposed three years ago. Two engineering competency-based courses used the framework for assessment. Assessment rubrics were prepared and used for evaluating and collecting the students’ data progressively, thus enabling the use of learning analytics for decision-making. Findings: Thanks to the model, (i) students received a detailed report of their achievements, including a thorough explanation and justification of the evaluation criteria; and (ii) instructors could improve the course and provide objective evidence of their actions to quality assurance agencies. As a result, the framework is presently being used in fifteen courses taught at eight different university degrees at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso (PUCV).Publicación The Ball and Beam System: A Case Study of Virtual and Remote Lab Enhancement With Moodle(IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), 2015-06-10) Torre Cubillo, Luis de la; Guinaldo Losada, María; Heradio Gil, Rubén; Dormido Canto, SebastiánWeb-based labs are key tools for distance education that help to illustrate scientific phenomena, which require costly or difficult-to-assemble equipment. Easy Java Simulations (EJS) is an authoring tool that speeds up the creation of these kind of labs. An excellent proof of the EJS potential is the open source physics (OSP) repository, which hosts hundreds of free EJS labs. Learning management systems, such as Moodle, provide social contexts where students interact with each other. The work described in this paper looks for the synergy of both tools, EJS and Moodle, by supporting the deployment of EJS labs into Moodle and thus enriching them with social features (e.g., chat, forums, and videoconference). To test this approach, the authors have created the ball and beam lab, which helps students of automatic control engineering to train different advanced techniques (robust, fuzzy, and reset control), and compare their performance in relation to a conventional proportional-integral-derivative control.Publicación The photoelectric effect and study of the diffraction of light: Two new experiments in UNILabs virtual and remote laboratories network(Società Italiana di Fisica, 2016-02-12) Sánchez Fernández, Juan Pedro; Sáenz Valiente, Jacobo; Torre Cubillo, Luis de la; Carreras, Carmen; Yuste, Manuel; Heradio Gil, Rubén; Dormido Canto, SebastiánThis work describes two experiments: “study of the diffraction of light: Fraunhofer approximation” and “the photoelectric effect”. Both of them count with a virtual, simulated, version of the experiment as well as with a real one which can be operated remotely. The two previous virtual and remote labs (built using Easy Java(script) Simulations) are integrated in UNILabs, a network of online interactive laboratories based on the free Learning Management System Moodle. What are the current trends and issues in the implementation and deployment of these tools? And the future ones? Virtual and remote labs reduce the costs associated with conventional hands-on labs due to their required equipment, space, and maintenance staff. Furthermore, they provide additional benefits such as supporting distance learning, improving lab accessibility to handicapped people, and increasing safety for dangerous experimentation. This paper analyzes the literature on virtual and remote labs from its beginnings to 2015, identifying the most influential publications, the most researched topics, and how the interest in those topics has evolved along the way. To do so, bibliographical data gathered from ISI Web of Science, Scopus and GRC2014 have been examined using two prominent bibliometric approaches: science mapping and performance analysis.Publicación Standardizing course assessment in competency-based higher education: an experience report(Frontiers Media, 2018-06-18) Vargas, Hector; Arredondo, Emanuel; Heradio Gil, Rubén; Torre Cubillo, Luis de laWe examine the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valpara´ıso (PUCV) in Chile, focusing on the challenges associated with assessment methods in measuring students’ competencies accurately. To address these issues, we first introduce the Competency Assessment and Monitoring (C-A&M) model, which aims to standardize and improve course evaluation. Then, two complementary studies are reported: a within-groups design involving 20 Engineering courses and a between-groups design assessing the perceptions of 109 instructors across various faculties, including Law, Philosophy, and Education. Findings indicate that CBE is not yet fully realized at PUCV, with considerable room for improvement in evaluation strategies, alignment of learning objectives with competencies, and synchronization of training activities. However, the implementation of the C-A&M model led to significant enhancements in these areas, providing evidence of its effectiveness in advancing CBE practices.
