    The work reception of Vincent De Beauvais in Spain

    It seems that biography and extensive work of the French Dominican Vincent of Beauvais has been poorly disseminated in Spain until very recently. However, in the archives and libraries of our country there are at least 19 manuscripts and 90 (65 incunabula of them) printed works are located, according to the Collective Catalogue of the Spanish Bibliographic Heritage. Historiography shows that influence of Beauvais in our country, between the 13th and 20th centuries, is greater than what until now had been studied. Through these pages it is evident that the number of works preserved Beauvais is important, but the fact that his work and thought, united with the previous classical and Christian tradition, is powerful in many Hispanic authors from the XIII century to today.

    The episcopal appointments for the Crown of Castile under Philip III, according to the Historical National File: an approach

    La documentación del AHN revela que, de un total de 107 obispos elegidos por Felipe III para la Corona de Castilla, 67 fueron designados previa terna propuesta por la Cámara de Castilla y que, en el 30% de los casos, el rey desoyó las sugerencias de sus colaboradores designando a otro candidato. Los nuevos obispos procedían mayoritariamente del entorno de la Corte, la Inquisición y las Órdenes religiosas, pero sólo se conoce el currículum de estudios de la mitad de ellos. De momento no es posible probar documentalmente la influencia de los confesores reales en los nombramientos episcopales.

    Education of the young according to the humanist, Johann Funger

    Johann Funger is a Dutch renaissance scholar, author of “The Correct Training and Education of the Young”, published in Antwerp (Belgium) by Christoffel Plantin in 1584. The original Latin text has recently been translated into Spanish and consists of thirty chapters. In his book, Funger deals with the contents of the studies, the intellectual habits of pupils, the virtues they should attain and the vices they should avoid.

    Durante mi intervención intentaré dar respuesta a tres preguntas fundamentales: en primer lugar, porqué nació el Estudio General de Calatayud; en segundo término, qué tipo de estudios ofrecía y para finalizar, porqué motivo dejó de funcionar como tal, sólo tres años después de su fundación. Para responder a estas cuestiones, previamente, trataré de contextualizar todos estos hechos en la Historia de la Educación medieval.

    Francisco Javier Vergara Ciordia (Allo, Navarra, 1958) graduated in Philosophy (1981), Section Philosophy and Educational Sciences at the Pontifical University of Salamanca with Honours Degree. He holds a PhD in History of Education at the University of Navarra (1986), also with Honours. He is currently Professor in the Department of History of Education and Comparative Education at the National University of Distance Education in Madrid (UNED) and Visiting Professor at the University of Navarra. Was Fellow Researcher Institutum Historicum Societatis Iesu in Rome (IHSI) and since 2005 Director of the Group of Medieval and Renaissance Studies (GEMYR). This study shows not only political but also cultural relations, of Navarre with France and Castile. It is situated in the context of contributions to the history of late medieval Education, published under the direction of Prof. Vergara Ciordia by the Group for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (GEMYR), which is based in the Faculty of Education at UNED.

    Holy Bible in Johannes Fungerius Library (1546-1612): a Dutch Calvinist of the beginnings

    El artículo analiza el contenido de la biblioteca privada del humanista neerlandés Juan Funguerio (1546-1612) notable bibliófilo, formada por unos 1100 títulos, según el documento de subasta pública de los mismos, verificada en Leiden en 1613. Se estudiarán el conjunto de los libros teológicos y especialmente los ejemplares de la Sagrada Escritura, a fin de comprobar si respondían al perfil de un calvinista de primera hora. Todo parece indicar que fue un humanista del norte, un cristiano reformado de tendencia moderada, con amplios intereses intelectuales

    Social psychology at the Royal School of St Elizabeth in Madrid

    This paper presents the major ideas on social psychology at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th at the Royal School of St Elizabeth (Real Colegio de Santa Isabel) in Madrid. First of all, the school reflects the different social strata: pupils from the upper and lower classes. Secondly, within the framework of a predominantly Christian culture, the interest in universal education was manifested in providing free education to the more disadvantaged pupils in Madrid at that time. It was a society that respected the social strata, projecting differential psychology of diverse characteristics depending on the social class. The pupils from the upper class received the type of education that reflected their social status, while the curriculum for the lower class reflected their own social status. These differences were mitigated as the culture gave rise to a global social psychology whose exponent is the school presented here.

    Introduction to a study on the relationship between Josemaría Escrivá and the Real Patronato de Santa Isabel in Madrid

    El presente trabajo consta de tres partes íntimamente relacionadas entre sí: en primer lugar se esboza la relación de san Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer con el real patronato de Santa Isabel, entre los años 1931 y 1945, inicialmente como capellán interino y después como rector-administrador. A continuación se ofrece una documentada historia de dicho real patronato, fundación regia de carácter religioso-educativo llevada a cabo por el rey Felipe II. Finalmente se presenta un elenco de fuentes para un ulterior estudio sobre el fundador del Opus Dei y el Real Patronato de Santa Isabel.

    Pedagogical censorship in the Society of Jesus in the Early Modern Age through its domestic law

    Este artículo analiza el fenómeno de la censura en la Compañía de Jesús en la Edad Moderna. Se abordan dos grandes temas: la opinionum censura y la nostrorum librorum censura. Se estudian cinco frentes documentales: las Observanda circa usum librorum prohibitorum del P. Mercuriano (1575), el breve Exponi nobis del papa Gregorio XIII (1575), el «Procedimiento que los censores de Roma observarán para examinar los libros» [Quae a romanis censoribus observari oportet in censendis libris], aprobado por el P. Acquaviva en 1601, las Regulae Revisorum generalium contempladas en el decreto XI de la X Congregación General (1652) y el análisis de diferentes decretos sobre censura planteados en las Congregaciones Generales de los siglos xvii y xviii. El material de trabajo se ha extraído del depósito documental sobre el derecho interno de la Compañía, recogido en la edición de Praga de Institutum Societatis Iesu (1767).
