    Birth order, sibling size and educational attainment in twentieth century Spain

    This research presents new evidence on the negative associations of the number of siblings and birth order with years of schooling among female and male Spanish cohorts born in the first six decades of the twentieth century. Special attention is given to unravelling the separate effects of both factors, sib size and birth order. Based on data from the 1991 Spanish Sociodemographic Survey (SDS), findings in Spain support the theoretical framework of the family conditional resource dilution model and indicate that both number of siblings and birth order have been important and relatively independent factors in reducing educational attainment. The association of family size and birth order with educational attainment was contingent to a significant extent on socio-economic status. Whereas the educational consequences of number of siblings are not uniformly distributed by social class, the results for birth order are much more homogeneous. This suggests that parents in high socioeconomic statuses were able to limit the effects of dilution induced by the number of siblings while the dynamics of the dilution of resources associated with the birth order depended, in part, on factors not entirely controllable by families.

    Women living alone in later life: A multicountry comparative analysis

    This paper compares the determinants of living alone among elderly women in six countries (Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia, Brazil, Spain, and Sweden) with very different family systems, policy contexts, levels of development, and socio-economic characteristics. Different factors behind the residential choices of elderly women are estimated by means of logistic regression. Decomposition models are used to assess the extent to which observed differences between countries correspond to specific population compositions or to other factors. Although the importance of all independent variables for living alone is shown to be strong and statistically significant, persistent intercountry disparities in behaviour linked to levels of familism and development remain. Population composition explains only a small part of the observed differences in living alone. Economic development provides an important underlying explanation for the incidence of living alone among women, but many specific differences can also be explained by societal characteristics such as family systems and available policy options.

    Early school leaving, number of siblings and birth order in Spain

    This article extends our understanding of early school leaving in developed countries by analysing whether the risk of dropping out depends on family characteristics such as number of siblings and birth order. The study is based on a large sample of the 2011 Spanish census and estimates the relative risks of early school leaving using Poisson regression models. The main findings point out that the risk of dropping out of school is negatively related to both the number of siblings and birth order. Moreover, this negative relationship appears across virtually all socioeconomic statuses. Only families in high social positions manage to mitigate the impact of the number of siblings, but not that of birth order.

    Partnership and mortality in mid and late life: Protection or selection?

    The main goal of this paper is to address how different partnership statuses impact the likelihood of death among mature adults and elderly persons in Spain circa 2012 using a massive new dataset of administrative registers linked to census data. First, gross and net effects of having a partner on mortality risks of partnered and non-partnered persons are evaluated; then the characteristics and the importance of selection and protection effects of marriage and partnership with regard to the likelihood of death are assessed. We make use of exact matching methods in order to avoid the selection bias associated with the non-random assignment of persons to different partnership statuses. Protection effects decline gradually with age, but always remain positive. Selection effects show a far more pronounced decline with age leading to a pattern in which selection is much stronger than protection during the mature adult ages, but then disappear entirely and even become negative as people age. While both sexes show similar patterns, the protection effect is slightly higher among men while the selection effect is much higher among women, especially before 65 years of age.

    La igualdad pendiente. La persistencia de la desigualdad de oportunidades tras la expansión educativa.

    El sistema educativo español experimentó una gran expansión, sobre todo a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado. Esta expansión ha aumentado el nivel formativo de las generaciones más jóvenes, especialmente en el caso de las mujeres. Sin embargo, aunque ha reducido las desigualdades educativas, no las ha erradicado. Hoy día se sigue constatando una clara asociación entre las condiciones socioeconómicas y culturales de los hogares y la probabilidad de escolarización temprana de la infancia, la tasa de abandono escolar y la oportunidad de los hijos e hijas de cursar estudios terciarios. Particularmente preocupante es la situación de sectores sociales con escasa formación y rentas bajas, que se enfrentan a grandes dificultades a la hora de evitar que sus hijos obtengan resultados educativos desfavorables.

    Are Younger Students More Likely to Drop Out? Spanish Evidence on the Moderator Role of Gender and Social Origin

    Early school leaving (ESL) is considered one of the most serious problems in the functioning of European education systems. In particular, Spain has traditionally exhibited one of the largest ESL rates in Europe. This study aimed to shed light on the role of the month of birth as a factor conditioning the probability of ESL. Using high-quality census data and a regression discontinuity design, we documented that Spanish males from lower social strata born before the school-entry cut-off are substantially more likely to be observed as early school leavers than their counterparts born after that date. We do not find such effect among females or males from other social strata. Overall, educational policy should target more seriously the inequalities associated with the month of birth as they do not vanish before affecting relevant decisions such as leaving education early, at least for males from lower social strata.
