Publicación The Potential of the SMART Learning Framework to Design and Implement Geospatial Curricula in the Secondary Classroom(Taylor & Francis, 2023-12-14) Buzo Sánchez, Isaac; Mínguez, Carmen; Lázaro Torres, María Luisa deThis study investigates the didactic educational use of Web GIS in the framework of SMART learning and its potential to help students’ practice geospatial thinking. Using qualitative, exploratory action research methods, four classroom experiences were designed, developed, implemented, and analyzed. The findings support the claims that the use of Web GIS facilitates geographic knowledge and enhances spatial and digital competencies and skills. Additionally, in line with the SMART framework and perspective on learning, these findings indicate that such classroom approaches promote autonomous learning, is adaptable in diverse settings, and is motivating for students. El Atlas Digital Escolar incorpora todas estas capacidades tecnológicas y didácticas, permitiendo además que los alumnos se inicien en los SIG y en la metodología de trabajo por proyectos, contribuyendo lo que se conoce como “Web-based GIS learning” y “GIScience”.Publicación Expert perspectives on GIS use in Spanish geographic education(Taylor and Francis Group, 2022-07-04) Buzo Sánchez, Isaac; Mínguez, Carmen; Lázaro Torres, María Luisa deThe emergence of new technological tools for territorial analysis, such as cloud-based GIS, or GIS viewers, compels us to closely examine its usefulness in geographic education. Specifically, it raises the professors and teachers’ questions: what to teach? how to teach? and what will students learn? This research responds to these three questions by interviewing Spanish experts who know how to use these tools to teach geography at university and secondary school levels. The Delphi technique was applied to achieve this, which established consensus and led to the following results from experts’ own experience: (1) that GIS help to understand territory in an experiential and non-memoristic way and (2) they enable the development of spatial thinking. This paper concludes that changes in methodologies and integrate technical knowledge into teacher training are needed.Publicación The potential of the SMART learning framework to design and implement geospatial curricula in the secondary classroom(Taylor and Francis Group / Routledge, 2023-10-06) Buzo Sánchez, Isaac; Mínguez, Carmen; Lázaro Torres, María Luisa deThis study investigates the didactic educational use of Web GIS in the framework of SMART learning and its potential to help students’ practice geospatial thinking. Thus, emerging cloud computing possibilities for outdoor learning in geography would come in very handy for these students. The increase of geographical information or geoinformation on the cloud makes us aware of spatial thinking. Mobile devices, used frequently for leisure, offer new possibilities in order to collect data and learn. It is necessary to train teachers to use such devices as well as good practices. The objectives of this work are to show how we can learn geography outdoors with mobile devices and how our collected data can be uploaded on the cloud with other data in order to build new knowledge. This would means a new paradigm for teachers and students which would involve doing research on the project “School on the Cloud: connecting education to the cloud for digital citizenship” (SoC). The ESRI ArcGIS Online platform allows the creation of different types of web mapping on the cloud on different topics such as agrarian landscape, noise pollution and other landscapes creating geographical itineraries. Some reflections around good practices will close the presentation.
