Publicación Didactic Audiovisual Translation and Foreign Language Education(Routledge, 2024) Talaván Zanón, Noa; Lertola, Jennifer; Fernández-Costales, AlbertoThis book offers an updated and comprehensive view of the possibilities of didactic audiovisual translation (didactic AVT or DAT) in language education, by presenting the methodological bases that support its pedagogical use at all levels of linguistic proficiency, as well as in different educational stages and contexts. The volume defines the main didactic AVT modes, accompanied by general recommendations, specific guidelines, complete sample lesson plans and sequences, and models for assessment. Didactic AVT is described in this book as an effective pedagogical resource that can improve students’ language competence and trigger core factors in education, such as learners’ motivation and engagement in language classes, their cognitive processes, their creativity, and the active use of ICTs in the classroom. From the perspective of educators, DAT provides a pool of multipurpose resources that may help them to enrich their classes from a pedagogical, linguistic and intercultural standpoint. This book will be a valuable resource for graduate students, scholars, and practitioners in translation studies, particularly those interested in audiovisual translation and foreign language learning.Publicación A quasi-experimental research project on subtitling and foreign language acquisition(Peter Lang, 2011) Talaván Zanón, NoaPublicación Teaching languages for social and cooperation purposes: using didactic media accessibility in foreign language education(UCL Press, 2024) Ogea Pozo, María del Mar; Talaván Zanón, Noa; Bolaños García-Escribano, Alejandro; Oaknín, Mazal; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7612-2280Publicación Foreword(9781040120538, 2024) Talaván Zanón, Noa; Plaza Lara, Cristina; Ogea Pozo, María del Mar; Botella Tejera, CarlaPublicación Collaborative Networks to Provide Media Accessibility: the Potential of Social Subtitling(Universidad de Granada, 2016-09) Talaván Zanón, Noa; Ávila Cabrera, José JavierAudiovisual products are becoming more and more accessible to all types of users. As far as audiovisual communication is concerned, nowadays a considerable number of audiovisual programs viewers can watch in Spain are usually made accessible by means of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH), audiodescription (AD) or sign language interpreting (SLI). In the context of the university, the actual need to make audiovisual products accessible to the whole community becomes pivotal, given the importance of addressing two major issues: firstly, meeting the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing by being able to access information via subtitles; and, secondly, producing subtitles for those not linguistically competent in the corresponding L2; AD and SLI are more complicated to implement in this setting, and that is why the present approach deals with subtitling alone. In particular, this paper delves into the results obtained from a social subtitling project, conducted in 2014 and implemented at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), where volunteer students subtitled videos both individually and collaboratively so as to make them accessible to a wider audience. The analysis of the qualitative data gathered complements previous research in the field and sheds more light into the potential of social subtitling of audiovisual programs produced at the university so as to proceed to fruitful further research.Publicación Audiovisual Translation in Language Education: An introduction(John Benjamins, 2020-11) Incalcaterra McLoughlin, Laura; Lertola, Jennifer; Talaván Zanón, Noa; Incalcaterra, Laura; Lertola, Jennifer; Talaván Zanón, Noa; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4195-0734; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4991-8555In recent years, interest in the application of audiovisual translation (AVT) techniques in language teaching has grown beyond unconnected case studies to create a lively network of methodological intertextuality, cross-references, reviews and continuation of previous trials, ultimately defining a recognisable and scalable trend. Whilst the use of AVT as a support in language teaching is not new, this volume looks at a different application of AVT, with learners involved in the audiovisual translation process itself, performing tasks such as subtitling, dubbing, or audio describing. It therefore presents a sample of the current research in this field, with particular reference to case studies that either have a large-scale or international dimension, or can be scaled and replicated in various contexts. It is our hope that these contributions will arouse the interest of publishers of language learning material and other stakeholders and ultimately lead to the mainstreaming of AVT in language education. Firstly, it examines the need for the educational use of both subtitles and subtitling in the classroom. Then, it provides a sample activity that exploits both tools with the aim of improving oral comprehension skills that is assessed through multi-methodological research. All in all, the didactic application of an activity based on the use of subtitles as learning support and of subtitling as the active production of subtitles by students in front of the computer, entails a series of benefits that are worth noting: it assists students in the development of oral comprehension skills, provides them with different types of support (visual, textual, and technological) for language development, encourages learners to face authentic input, and produces tangible output (the subtitles produced by students) that can be shared with their peers (or even on the web).Publicación Voice-over to improve oral Production skills: the VICTOR project(PUV, Publicacions Universitat de Valencia, 2018) Talaván Zanón, Noa; Rodríguez Arancón, Pilar; Sanderson Pastor, John D.; Botella Tejera, CarlaThe assessment of the potential of audiovisual translation in foreign language education has been receiving increasing attention in the past few years. Although subtitling as a didactic tool is the modality that has been studied the most, research on revoicing techniques, such as dubbing and audiodescription is also starting to become the focus of attention. The VICTOR project was conceived as an attempt to assess the potential of yet another revoicing option that needed to be addressed: voice-over. Students enrolled in English C1 at the Online Foreign Language Centre of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) volunteered to take part in this pilot experience and produced various revoiced versions of four videos (chosen among ten preselected clips) over the course of two months. The researchers analysed the experience through language assessment tests (related to improvement in pronunciation), questionnaires and observation. A YouTube channel was created to share and peer-review the tasks carried out and an adhoc rubric was designed to assess the revoicing work performed on the videos. The results are promising enough in terms of oral production skills improvement to encourage further research in the area.Publicación Translation as a science and translation as an art: a practical approach(Mc Graw Hill, 2017) Talaván Zanón, Noa; Sánchez Sainz-Trápaga, CristinaThis book arises from the need to provide readers with the necessary theoretical and practical tools to understand the fundamentals of translation, defined both as a science and as an art. These pages do not attempt to solve any mysteries, nor do they aim at providing final solutions to translation problems. The primary goal of the present monograph is to describe the basic concepts that any person interested in learning about translation should know, be it a student, a scholar, or a translation enthusiast. Once the various notions are presented and exemplified following the English-Spanish language pair, practical tasks are always suggested. The proposed solutions and analyses of the translation process, outlined in the final section of the book, will evidence the relevance of the practical application of the theoretical knowledge within this field. Translation will never be considered an exact science because its scope is so broad and in such constant evolution and change that it will always be impossible to measure and systematize in its entirety.
