Twenty years of research on immigration and school in Spaintaking stock of some of the lessons learned
(SAGE Publications, 2021-12-01) Berzosa Ramos, Ignacio; Arroyo González, María José
The purpose of our study is to conduct a systematic review of the research conducted on immigrant students in the school context in Spain from 2000 to 2020 contained in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. Our intention is to analyse the arc of Spanish research on immigration and school over these years. To do so, we have evaluated the emerging topics through content analysis, organizing the studies found according to the topics they discuss: (1) the social construction of immigrant students; (2) schooling processes; (3) educational measures at school; (4) teachers; (5) managing multilingualism at school; (6) the process of adapting to school and society; (7) family and school; (8) educational trajectories and school success; and (9) relations between educational policies and practices. The analysis helps us to understand the situation of educational research in this field, as well as to identify the challenges still pending which may guide both future studies and school practices in order to contribute to the real educational inclusion of these students.

Unresolved issues in second language Learning by immigrant students: Challenges and opportunities
(Nova Publisher, 2018) Berzosa Ramos, Ignacio; Arroyo González, María José; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9416-7674
In this chapter, we shall review some forgotten issues in the learning of second languages by immigrant students. The different educational administrations of the countries taking in these pupils have tried to solve this need, mainly through the creation of host classrooms for learning of the vehicular language. However, this resource has not always provided the results expected or desired by the educational or scientific community. Our aim is to carry out a review of those aspects that influence the success of language learning and which should logically be present when considering these educational processes. Many of these issues are well known and have been highlighted for years as influential variables in the success of language learning by the specialist literature: the contributions of bilingual programmes, the role of mother tongue in the learning of other languages, the methodology applied, teacher training in this area, second language curriculum design, or some important documents for schools. Although previous research in the area shows us that there is no single formula for learning the host language and a variety of formulas is always preferable to the single model, it seems clear that these aspects should and must be present when designing the educational measures to ensure the language learning of these pupils. There is therefore a pressing need for reflection on these issues by the countries that receive these new students, as it is the first challenge they will have to face in order to access the school curriculum, school integration and, ultimately, social participation.
