Con todo, sus heroínas tienden a representar –de grado o de fuerza– el papel que la concepción tradicional atribuye a la mujer: el de esposa y madre. Este artículo se centra en la figura de Suzanne, protagonista de La Jeannette, que padecerá con estoicismo las consecuencias de su obediencia filial: un matrimonio forzado y desdichado. El análisis de la novela permite poner de manifiesto una crítica social destinada a las madres que contrarían la voluntad de sus hijas a la hora de elegir marido. El estudio también pone de relieve la voluntad de la autora de reivindicar determinados postulados juzgados demasiado modernos o inmorales por la sociedad de su tiempo.The feminine characters of Max du Veuzit (pseudonym of Alphonsine Zéphirine Vavasseur) –particularly when compared with other feminine authors of her time, like Delly– offer certain features of modernity, which brought her the disapproval of the Maison de la Bonne-Presse. In spite of this, her main characters often play –willingly or not– the role fixed by traditional notions of women: the one of mother and wife. This essay deals with the figure of Suzanne, female protagonist of the novel La Jeannette, who endures with stoicism the consequences of her obedience to her mother: a forced and unhappy marriage. The analysis of the novel enables us to demonstrate a social criticism aimed at mothers who force their daughters to marry against their will.
