Vienna 19–24 September 2022The distinction between imported sculptures and works produced in local workshops is easier in large ensembles, as is the case in Tarraco, capital of the province Hispania citerior. The aim of this work is to assess the hypotheses formulated by various researchers, based on several criteria. These criteria are, mainly, the degree of fidelity with respect to the original model, the raw materials used and the stylistic quality of the works. Attention has been paid to the type of representation (divinities or portraits), dimensions and qualitative aspects of the marbles used. The results of this study show that some of the statues were probably sculpted in local workshops. However, many sculptures were quite likely made in foreign workshops, both in Rome and in the Eastern Mediterranean. This study provides new data on the production process of Roman marble sculptures in this important city of Hispania.eninfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess5506.02 Historia del arteRoman Marble Statues in Tarraco (Hispania Citerior): imports and local productioncapítulo de libro
