Sin embargo, la agresión de la Federación Rusa a Ucrania ha propiciado el cumplimiento de un nuevo papel de la Unión Europea en su relación con la CPI y en la lucha contra la impunidad de los crímenes internacionales más graves cometidos en dicho conflicto. En este sentido, está siendo decisiva la actuación de Eurojust como centro de armonización de los esfuerzos investigadores en relación con los crímenes cometidos en Ucrania. Igualmente, la puesta en marcha de otros mecanismos novedosos por parte de la Unión Europea revela la consolidación de un rol inédito de la UE en la lucha contra la impunidad.Historically, the European Union has been a strong supporter of the International Criminal Court (ICC), both in its creation and in the integrity of its founding instrument (the Rome Statute), as well as in the development of its functions. However, the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has led to a new role for the European Union in its relationship with the ICC and in the fight against impunity for the most serious international crimes committed in this conflicregard, Eurojust plays a crucial role as a centre for the harmonisation of investigative efforts in relation to crimes committed in Ukraine.
