In this text we have two objectives; first, to evaluate the explanatory and analytical capacity of the main sociological theories of globalisation in the face of the current COVID-19 pandemic, by definition a global event. And secondly, to participate in the debate that has now opened over whether the consequences of the pandemic have provoked or accelerated a process of deglobalisation. Regarding the first, we argue for the validity of certain key aspects of reflexive modernity, in particular, the existence of the risk society. In addition, there is also evidence of a strengthening of systemic and neo-institutionalist approaches, which emphasise global social processes over the particular development of the actors involved. Regarding the second, we cautiously argue, due to the lack of solid empirical data or their provisional nature, that, although there are conjunctural indicators of a process of deglobalisation, national retreat could be a trend that began before the pandemic. This does not imply deglobalisation, but instead reveals the role that the state has played in the formation of the globalisation process itself.en
