Resumen
Transcurridos poco más de cien años del fallecimiento de la célebre poeta uruguaya Delmira Agustini, pretendemos, con esta tesis doctoral, homenajear la figura de la enigmática mujer que revolucionó las letras uruguayas con su poderoso e irreverente canto lírico. Admirada y censurada a partes iguales, Delmira Agustini, pese a las tensiones y contradicciones propias del periodo finisecular a las que tuvo que enfrentarse, supo imprimir un nuevo aliento al Modernismo literario hispanoamericano en una época en la que el movimiento se acercaba a su inexorable ocaso, convirtiéndose, además, en la precursora de otras voces poéticas femeninas que, retomando su legado, no tardaron en despuntar en el continente americano. Nuestro particular homenaje arranca con un estudio introductorio en el que repasamos algunos de los episodios más destacados de la biografía de la autora, analizamos el contexto histórico-cultural en el que le tocó vivir, realizamos una somera aproximación a su universo literario e indagamos acerca de la influencia ejercida por Agustini en la construcción de la identidad literaria de otras grandes poetas del Cono Sur. En el siguiente apartado de nuestra investigación, divulgamos una serie de cartas inéditas recibidas por la poeta uruguaya a lo largo de su trayectoria profesional, material cuya lectura e interpretación nos ha permitido ampliar los datos ya conocidos sobre sus relaciones intelectuales, así como sobre la recepción crítica de su obra en el momento inmediatamente posterior a su creación. Precisamente la edición crítica de la obra completa de Agustini constituye el eje central de esta tesis doctoral: en ella no solo hemos incluido por primera vez la producción édita completa de la autora de Los astros del abismo, sino que, además, hemos vertido en el aparato crítico la mayor parte de las variantes contenidas en sus manuscritos autógrafos e idiógrafos, textos que hemos podido consultar personalmente en la Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay. Como un complemento a nuestra edición crítica y en aras de difundir la figura y la obra literaria de Delmira Agustini en los países de lengua portuguesa, hemos organizado y traducido al portugués europeo una antología que recoge los que, a nuestro juicio, son los treinta poemas esenciales de su producción. Asimismo, con el objeto de profundizar en el estudio de la lengua literaria de la poeta uruguaya, un área de estudio tradicionalmente relegada a un segundo plano en pro de investigaciones de índole fundamentalmente biográfica, presentamos, antes de las consabidas conclusiones y referencias bibliográficas de nuestra investigación, un estudio que contiene las concordancias e índices léxicos completos de los setenta y dos poemas que conforman el poemario Los cálices vacíos.
We write this doctoral thesis just over one hundred years after the death of the famous Uruguayan poet Delmira Agustini to pay tribute to this enigmatic woman, who revolutionised Uruguayan writing with her powerful and irreverent lyricism. Despite the characteristic end-of-century tensions and contradictions she had to face, being both admired as well as criticised, Delmira Agustini managed to breathe new life into Latin American literary modernism – at a time when it was headed towards its inexorable decline – while also becoming a trailblazer for other female poets who, following her line of thought, would achieve rapid recognition in the American continent. Our tribute begins with an introductory study in which we review some of the most striking episodes from the author’s biography. We analyse Agustini’s historical and cultural background, briefly approach her literary universe, and examine her influence in the construction of the literary identity of other great poets from the Southern Cone. In the subsequent section, we present a series of unpublished letters that the Uruguayan poet received throughout her career. Reading and interpreting these documents has allowed us to complement the existing knowledge of her intellectual relationships and the critical reception of her work immediately following its creation. The critical edition of Agustini’s complete works is at the heart of this doctoral thesis. We not only present, for the first time, the complete and edited work of the author of Los astros del abismo, but we also introduce the most part of the existing variations of her handwritten and ideographic manuscripts into our critical commentary, which we had the opportunity to examine in person at Uruguay’s National Library. To complement our critical edition, with the goal of disseminating the author and her literary work in Portuguese-speaking countries, we have organised an anthology of what we believe to be the thirty essential poems of her artistic creation and translated them to European Portuguese. Lastly, and to deepen the study of the Uruguayan poet’s literary language, which is an area of research typically marginalised in benefit of other biographical studies, we present a study, just before our conclusions and bibliographic references, that includes the correlations and complete lexicon of the seventy-two poems that form the Los cálices vacíos collection.
