Paranormal entities play a more important role in Macbeth and Hamlet than in other Shakespearean tragedies. A comparison between them reveals differences related to the relation of paranormal entities with the main characters and their contribution to the overall atmosphere. There are also points in common between the ghosts of Banquo and Hamlet’s father. Following new historicism, it is possible to identify some tensions present at Elizabethan society: ghosts show a conflict between Catholic and Protestant beliefs, while witches, although initially portrayed according to stereotypes of the time, cannot be ultimately responsible for Macbeth’s actions.en
