Publicación Current Issues in Late Middle Palaeolithic Chronology: the Curious Case of Northern Iberia.(2012-01-16) Maroto, Julià; Vaquero, Manuel; Arrizabalaga, Álvaro; Baena Preysler, Javier; Baquedano, Enrique; Julià, Ramón; Montes, Ramón; Van del Plicht, J.; Rasines, Pedro; Wood, Rachel; Jordá Pardo, Jesús FranciscoThe Iberian Peninsula plays a central role in the current debates on the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic transition and the Neanderthal extinction. This is largely due to the chronological data which some authors have suggested show a clear divide between Northern Iberia, where the Upper Palaeolithic appeared as early as 36.5 ka 14C BP, and Southern Iberia, where the Middle Palaeolithic survived until ca. 32-30 ka 14C BP or later. The best example of this view is the Ebro Frontier hypothesis. However, there are chronological data in both Northern and Southern Iberia that do not fit this pattern, and some of the evidence supporting the Ebro Frontier hypothesis has been questioned in recent years. This paper focuses on the chronology of the final Middle Palaeolithic of Northern Iberia, where several assemblages have been found to post-date the first Upper Palaeolithic in the region, and be of a similar age to the final Neanderthal occupations of the south. In order to improve the chronological framework of the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic boundary in the Northern Iberian Peninsula, we are carrying out a radiocarbon dating program focused on sites from both the Cantabrian and Mediterranean regions. The first results of this program are presented in this paper. New radiocarbon dates have been measured by two laboratories using a range of pre-treatment methodologies. These do not support a late Middle Palaeolithic in Northern Iberia.Publicación Excavaciones arqueológicas en la Cueva de La Güelga.(Cangas de Onís. Pastoors y B. Auffermann, 2013-05-16) Carral González, Pilar; Wood, Rachel; Jordá Pardo, Jesús Francisco; Menéndez Fernández, Mario; Quesada López, José ManuelThe cave of La Güelga (Asturias, Spain) is located in the eastern region of the Asturian Massif within the carboniferous limestones of the Calizas de Montaña. A small river runs through the cave, and this has formed several marks on the walls and terraces at the cave entrance. This cavity is large and has the morphology of a rock shelter. In one terrace, an Upper Pleistocene deposit containing archaeological and palaeontological remains from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition has been excavated. These deposits have been AMS dated at the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit (ORAU). Bones were pretreated using the ultrafiltration protocol, which aims to purify the collagen selected for dating by removing contaminants. In many cases, dates on collagen processed in this way are significantly older than those where collagen has not been ultrafiltered. The new dates place the lower deposits from zone D between 55,710 – 44,940 years cal BP, during OIS 3c.
