This work aims to contribute to the literature on smart cities governance by studying councillor's governance in complex networks and on network performance. To carry out this analysis, the Spanish Network of Smart Cities (RECI), one of the first of its kind and an international reference for city networks, is reviewed as a case study, with the main objective of establishing a theory on its global innovation capacity and operations, together with the local level spurring influenced on its members. A PEST (Political, Economic, Social and Technological) analysis was carried out in order to assess the impact of the smart city network both at local, national and international level. This research was completed with a consultation carried out among some of RECI's municipalities. The analysis of the results shows how RECI can be considered an example of a well organised network with quantifiable savings for its members, capable of configuring future policies in local administration, necessarily related to efficiency, digitalization and citizen-centricity and with key topics to build the future. The study also suggests recommendations oriented to potential improvements that smart city networks could undertake.0332Palomo Navarro, Álvaro y Navío Marco, Julio . In this study, we experimentally evaluated the effect of exposure to social networks and stereotypical images of the thinness ideal on ED symptomatology and analyzed the mediator role of anxiety in this process. A sample of 321 young adults of both sexes (166 females) were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions: high and low exposure to the thin ideal. Our results indicate a decrease in self-esteem in the group exposed to the thin images and an increase in anxiety. We found the effect of the images on self-esteem is completely mediated by the increase in anxiety. No changes in body satisfaction or drive for thinness were found. Our study shows how brief exposure to images and profiles representative of the thin ideal seems to influence participants' self-esteem. These results show the need to raise awareness of the possible consequences of social media, as well as to promote a healthy use of social networks.0402Rodríguez-Suárez, Blanca, Caperos, José Manuel y Martínez-Huertas, José Ángel . Our best results on the RepLab dataset (which improves the state of the art) uses language models to learn the domain-specific vocabulary used by influencers and combines domain and authority models using a Learning to Rank algorithm. Our experiments show that (a) both authority and domain evidence can be trained from the vocabulary of influencers; (b) once the language of influencers is modeled as a likelihood signal, further supervised learning and additional network-based signals only provide marginal improvements; and (c) the availability of training data sets is crucial to obtain competitive results in the task. Our most remarkable finding is that influencers do use a distinctive vocabulary, which is a more reliable signal than nontextual network indicators such as the number of followers, retweets, and so on.0312Rodríguez-Vidal, Javier, Gonzalo, Julio, Plaza, Laura y Anaya Sánchez, Henry . Methods We tested an attribute network of regularized partial correlations, standard and alternative centrality measures, and comorbidity bridge symptoms according to centrality bridge measures. Results Regularized partial correlation network and a centrality measures graph shown the prominent position of social problems and anxiety–depression. Minimum spanning tree (MST) found a hierarchical dynamics between attributes where mixed anxiety–depression was identified as the core and the other attributes were hierarchically connected to it by being positioned in six branches that are differentiated according to their theoretical contents. The most central connections are established with the attributes of their own community or theoretical groups, and 37 bridge symptoms were identified in all networks. Conclusions A significant role of mixed anxiety depression as an activator and intermediary of psychopathologies was supported as a central attribute of internalizing problems. Aggressive behavior as part of the broad externalizing dimension was one of the constructs that most intensively activate the network, and social problems were also distinguished as a relevant factor not only in terms of connections and central attributes but also in terms of bridge symptoms and comorbidity. This framework extends to the study of symptomatic “comorbidity.”0372Sánchez Hernández, M.O, Holgado-Tello, F.P. y Carrasco Ortiz, Miguel Angel . Digital Platforms and the Future of Clinical Trials67255bibliuned:501117Is it possible to conduct impartial clinical trials in a world full of digital networking tools that patients can use to coordinate themselves and act against research protocols? This paper builds on an ethnography of PatientsLikeMe, a company running an Internet social media network where patients with different conditions share their clinical data with standardised questionnaires. The company faced a serious dilemma in 2011 when some ALS patients, members of the site, started sharing data about a phase II clinical trial of an experimental drug (NP001) in which some of them were participating, to anticipate the experiment’s outcomes and understand each one’s allocation over trial arms. In parallel, some other patients were using the site and other web tools to coordinate and run their own replication of the trial with homebrew mixes of industrial grade chemicals. PatientsLikeMe researchers reflected on their position as networks managers and eventually decided to use the collected data to develop their own analysis of the efficacy of the original compound, and of the homebrewers’ compound. They presented the NP001 events as a case in point for articulating a new social contract for clinical research. This paper analyses these events, first, by understanding the clinical trial as an experiment organisation form that can succeed only as long as its protocol can be enforced; second, we observe how web networks make it dramatically easier for the trial protocol to be violated; finally, we point out how a potentially dangerous confluence of interests over web networks could incubate developments that disrupt the status quo without creating a robust and safe alternative for experimentation. We conclude by warning about the interests of the pharmaceutical industry in exploiting patients’ methodological requests to its own advantage.05422Tempini, Niccolo y Teira, David . Unfortunately, social factors have usually been ignored in the process of selecting reviewers for online peer assessment tasks. We hypothesise that this fact could have some influence on the lack of engagement and participation by some learners. For this reason, we propose an approach in which social network analysis techniques, expert criteria, and Bayesian reasoning are applied to select reviewers with the objective of increasing participation in peer review tasks. The approach is divided into two elements. On the one hand, we have developed an influence diagram template that structures a set of proposed social network analysis variables in accordance with expert criteria. This influence diagram template can be easily updated for any course simply by eliciting a minimal set of parameters. On the other hand, we have instantiated the proposed influence diagram template to produce an influence diagram network to quantify the quality of reviewer assignment for an online peer assessment task. In an online experiment, we verified that the consideration of social factors can increase participation in a peer assessment task.0472Anaya, Antonio R., Luque, Manuel, Letón, Emilio y Hernández-del-Olmo, Félix . The current research aims to draw the structure of gender stereotypes and metastereotype schemes as complex systems of stereotypical features. Therefore, we analyze gender stereotypes as networks of interconnected characteristics. Method: Through an online survey (N = 750), participants listed the common female and male features to build the structure of the gender stereotypes. Participants also listed the common features of howmembers of one gender think they are viewed by people of the other gender to build the structure of gender metastereotypes. Results: Our results suggest that female stereotypes are characterized by a single community of features consistently associated such as intelligent, strong, and hardworkers. Female metastereotype, however, combines the previous community with another characterized by weak and sensitive. On the contrary, the male stereotype projected by women is characterized by a community of features associated such as intelligent, strong, and hardworker, but male in-group stereotypes and metastereotypes projected by men are a combination of this community with another one characterized by features associated such as strong, chauvinist, and aggressive. Discussion: A network approach to studying stereotypes provided insights into the meaning of certain traits when considered in combination with di0382Rodríguez Sánchez, Ángel, Moreno Bella, Eva y García Sánchez, Efrain . This paper investigates the value of texts from social networks as a data source for detecting the spatial distribution of problems within a public transit network by geolocating citizens' feelings, and analyzes the effects some factors such as population or income have over that spatial spread, with the goal of developing a more intelligent and sustainable public transit service. For that purpose, Twitter data from the Madrid Metro account is collected over a two-month period. Topics and sentiments are identified from text mining and machine learning algorithms, and mapped to explore spatial and temporal patterns. Lastly, a Geographically Weighted Regression model is used to explore the causality of the spatial distribution of complaining users, by using official data sources as exploratory variables. Results show Twitter users tend to be mid-income workers who reside in peripheral areas and mainly tweet when traveling to workplaces. The main detected problems were punctuality and breakdowns in transfer stations or in central areas, mainly in the early morning of weekdays, and affected by density of points of interest in destination areas.0352Osorio-Arjona, Joaquín, Horak, Jiri, Svoboda, Radek y García-Ruiz, Yolanda . Design/methodology/approach – In total, 150 questionnaires were applied; the questionnaire was adapted from Food Choice Questionnaire (Steptoe et al., 1995). Data were analyzed by means of multivariate statistics with factor and cluster analysis. In order to identify statistical differences ( p o 0.05), Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney nonparametric tests were performed. Findings – Ten factors or motivations were found: social ecological concern, nutritional content, sensory aspects, certifications, naturalness, specialized consumption, trust in the seller, economic aspects, health and availability. Four groups were obtained and called: citizen consumers, in-process citizen consumers, conscious social consumers with no interest in certifications and conscious pragmatic consumers. It is concluded that differentiated consumers visit these establishments and their motivations are diverse, albeit they concur, to a varying extent, with the objectives of AFNs, finding a mixture of hedonic and ethical motivations. Practical implications – This sort of works about specific places of consumption as well as specific consumers, in this case ecological, contributes to the development of future social research on other contexts, different consumers and products. Originality/value – This sort of research has been carried out in various European cities, with a number of foods and over various sales channels; however, at present there is a debate around AFNs and the veracity of their goals. This way, the present work can contribute with an answer to whether the goals match the motivations of consumers.0732Escobar Lópeza, Sttefanie Yenitza, Espinoza Ortegaa, Angélica, Lozano Cabedo, Carmen, Aguilar Criadob, Encarnación y Amaya Corchuelod, Santiago . Based on the interest aroused by the characteristics of info-communications society and the network in the world of Social Education, we present the results of an investigation whose aim has been show the space-time dimensionality in the network. For that end, the authors’ previous exposition to what in their judgement is the info communications and technocultural contingency of space and time, as well as the theoretical and dialectic
discourse that underlies the work, present a multivariate and discriminant analysis conducted with a sample of Salamanca University students. The most relevant results of this analysis find that the most important differences are the variables that refer to timespace perception associated with the idea of movement in time and the notion of continuity in space.08342Martín, Antonio Víctor, Muñoz, José Manuel, García del Dujo, Ángel and Sánchez, Mª Cruz . This work investigates the use of social media as an efficient tool for urban mobility studies. In this case, the social network Twitter has been used, due to its wealth of spatial and temporal data and the possibility of accessing data free of charge. Using a database of geotagged tweets in the Madrid Metropolitan Area over a two-year period, this article describes the steps followed in the preparation and cleansing of the initial data and the visualisation of the results in Geographic Information Systems in the form of home-work matrices. The Origin-Destination matrices obtained were then compared with the official data provided by the Madrid Transport Consortium from the 2014 Synthetic Mobility Survey. The results of this comparison demonstrate that the level of precision offered by Twitter as a source of geographic information is adequate and efficient, thereby permitting a more in-depth analysis of flows between different zones of interest in the study area.0402Osorio-Arjona, Joaquín y García Palomares, Juan Carlos . Case study: The European ECO Projectbibliuned:425-Sosuna-0007The European ECO Project has contributed to the dissemination of MOOCs by developing an educational model which promotes participation and interaction through social networks and an own virtual platform. Likewise, it fosters students’ empowerment by allowing them to create their own courses. Such training model is studied in this research work, firstly, through the analysis of teachers’ and students’ speeches posted on forum boards and groups. Then results obtained in several surveys conducted among participants, which consider interactions taking place both in and off the platform, are triangulated. Educational and motivational factors in the students’ profile show the advantages and disadvantages found in their perception of the collaborative learning model, as well as the empowerment derived from the participation in the creation of their own MOOCs. This study reveals multiple factors affecting the proper development of these courses, while considering communication as an incentive for the creation of knowledge through the MOOC itself. All this will contribute to improve the quality of education and to trigger a change of paradigm, necessary to understand today’s education and society.05942Osuna-Acedo, Sara, Gil Quintana, Javier y Cantillo Valero, Carmen . Nevertheless, there is still a dominant account grounded in a dichotomist view of the subject-object relationship either in teleological (mind-body) or in hylomorfic (form-matter) terms when analysing organising practices. On the contrary, our argument is based on nondualistic approaches in an attempt to foreground relational aspects of practices. From a practice-based approach, the article addresses the role of three ‘prototypes’ aimed at the management of the ‘air’ by citizenship, in the reconfiguration of bodies, technics and ethical-political engagement. Specifically, it focuses on the normative dimensions of organising by which knowledges, materials and values converge in the open-ended process of prototyping. The argument is deployed by relying on qualitative research based on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, developed both at different workshops and by online ethnography. The main aim of the article is to show how bodies and artefacts are mutually in/trans/formed when negotiating the social implications for the ontological category of ‘air’. In doing so, the concept of ‘informal infrastructure’ is proposed to account for those practices (which appear somewhat contingent, mundane or, at best, taken for granted) by which agents do not only commit to a particular ethical implication embedded in the category of ‘air’, as a symbolic result, but also to distinctive ways of practicing organisation as a political process of performing materiality. To this end, adopting the analytical concept of ‘informal infrastructure’ allows to simultaneously consider both the formal and informal aspects that emerge in these collaboration-driven practices, as well as to address their effects on the maintenance within and expansion into other networks.0762Fernández García, Sandra y Sánchez Valle, Francisco . The challenge is, however, to provide easy, quick and relevant access to the vast amount of information that is available. One step towards facilitating information access to online health data is opinion mining. Even though the classification of patient opinions into positive and negative has been previously tackled, most works make use of machine learning methods and bags of words. Our first contribution is an extensive evaluation of different features, including lexical, syntactic, semantic, network-based, sentiment-based and word embeddings features to represent patient-authored texts for polarity classification. The second contribution of this work is the study of polar facts (i.e. objective information with polar connotations). Traditionally, the presence of polar facts has been neglected and research in polarity classification has been bounded to opinionated texts. We demonstrate the existence and importance of polar facts for the polarity classification of health information. Material and methods We annotate a set of more than 3500 posts to online health forums of breast cancer, crohn and different allergies, respectively. Each sentence in a post is manually labeled as “experience”, “fact” or “opinion”, and as “positive”, “negative” and “neutral”. Using this data, we train different machine learning algorithms and compare traditional bags of words representations with word embeddings in combination with lexical, syntactic, semantic, network-based and emotional properties of texts to automatically classify patient-authored contents into positive, negative and neutral. Beside, we experiment with a combination of textual and semantic representations by generating concept embeddings using the UMLS Metathesaurus. Results We reach two main results: first, we find that it is possible to predict polarity of patient-authored contents with a very high accuracy (≈ 70 percent) using word embeddings, and that this considerably outperforms more traditional representations like bags of words; and second, when dealing with medical information, negative and positive facts (i.e. objective information) are nearly as frequent as negative and positive opinions and experiences (i.e. subjective information), and their importance for polarity classification is crucial.0352Carrillo de Albornoz, Jorge, Rodríguez-Vidal, Javier y Plaza, Laura . It focuses on an aspect of these parents’ strategies regarding disclosure (or non-disclosure) of their children’s origins which has received very little attention in the research in this field: the indirect strategies implemented in contexts beyond the parents-children dyad. The parents use these strategies to establish an environment in which the child can create an image of her- or himself as normal and non-exceptional, for which they intervene in their social networks mainly by controlling the information circulating through them and that, therefore, can reach the child. Three main contexts in which the parents implement these strategies have been identified: the extended family, the school, and family associations. The analysis of disclosure (or non-disclosure) strategies in these contexts provides some suggestions to improve professional intervention in this area.0362Jociles, María Isabel, Lores, Fernando y Konvalinka, Nancy . The first cMOOC and xMOOC models eventually evolved into different postMOOC modalities, such as sMOOC, which conjugates interaction among students with a participation model based on social networks. This work is focused on carrying out a systematic review of the state-of-the-art scientific literature referred to the concept of MOOC and its diverse types. Moreover, in this article, a new generation associated to sMOOC is unveiled: the tMOOC (Transfer Massive Open Online Courses). The methodology of study is based on the content analysis of those categories resulting after compiling 707 entries from Web of Science, plus an in-depth study of the 70 articles which were quoted at least 10 times. In addition, a case study has been carried out from European ECO Project’s “sMOOC step by step”, as an example of innovative pedagogical model based on collaborative learning to train future e-teachers. The results of the analysis show the very recent –and still scarce– research on the different types of MOOCs, as well as the finding of a new modality based on pedagogical transformation, learning transference and intercreative talent. As a conclusion, the analysis of all key factors in the configuration of tMOOC suggests a new taxonomy based on the 10 T’s.05622Osuna-Acedo, Sara, Marta Lazo, Carmen y Frau-Meigs, Divina .
