In the 2015 Barcelona City Council election, Barcelona en Comú, an emerging grassroots party, was the most voted one. This candidacy was devised by activists involved in the Spanish 15M movement in order to turn citizen outrage into political change. On the one hand, the 15M movement is based on a decentralized structure. On the other hand, political science literature postulates that parties historically develop oligarchical leadership structures. This tension motivates to examine whether Barcelona en Comú preserved a decentralized structure or adopted a conventional centralized organization. This thesis proposes a computational framework to (1) better identify the Twitter networks of political parties by setting a confidence parameter in a popular community detection algorithm of the state of the art, and (2) analyze each party network by measuring the hierarchical structure, small-world phenomenon and coreness. The evaluation of the framework on the Twitter networks of the parties that ran for this election shows that the extended community detection algorithm effectively set boundaries between party networks. Although most parties consist of one single cluster, in Barcelona en Comú two well-defined groups co-exist: a cluster dominated by the party leader and the collective accounts, and another cluster formed by the movement activists. While the former group is highly centralized like traditional parties, the latter one stands out for its decentralized, cohesive and resilient structure.0Doctoral Thesis2992Aragón Asenjo, Pablo. The main thesis of this research is to reveal whether Chinese American identity has evolved from the 1970s to nowadays, and discuss the factors which may have an influence on how Chinese Americans perceive themselves. The main two factors considered are the changing social environment within the United States in terms of race (internal dynamics); and the economic development and growing international influence of the People’s Republic of China (external dynamics). To this aim, I will address relevant concepts such as Gloria Andaldúa’s ‘border theory’ and Homi Bhabha’s ‘hybridity’, in order to position a third role within the ethnic black/white, minority/majority establishment. The State of the Art will introduce relevant research on Chinese American identity and Postcolonial theory. Ling-chi Wang will provide the theoretical framework through which to analyze some of the different stages in the development of Chinese American identity. Julia Lee and Bella Adam’s work on Maxine Hong Kingston’s oeuvre will be the basis to explore the themes discussed in The Woman Warrior as well as the historical and literary context in the second chapter. Finally, in the third chapter, I will present some contemporary examples of Chinese American identity in the United States media (film and stand-up comedy), and another set of examples of how the Chinese Diaspora is perceived in China. To conclude, I will briefly discuss how the Chinese Spanish identity is now emerging as a new reality. This study aims to show how Chinese American hybridity was a third pole within the white and black racial binary opposition, and how Chinese American identity evolves with the internal social dynamics within the United States, alongside the external fluctuation of China-U.S. relations; and aims to understand how modern Chinese Americans navigate their hybrid identity and perceive themselves in comparison to Kingston’s exploration of identity.0Doctoral Thesis4372Román García, Javier. However, research into family bilingualism has not yet given it much attention. The present survey study aimed to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the Family Language Policy (FLP) of NNBP families and the key factors that affect and shape their attitudes and linguistic practices. That is, the parents’ competence in the target language and the children’s growing competence in it. Data was collected by means of a parental self-report questionnaire and processed using IBM SPSS statistics software. Descriptive statistics revealed that One Parent One Language (OPOL) was the most common interaction strategy and that most parents used majority language with each other. Besides, the most frequent language socialization practices for this group were identified as well as their common ideologies. Most notably, low reported rates of code- mixing, a very strong impact belief, moderate concern about their non-native model, and the absence of negative opinions towards code-mixing. High degrees of continuity in language choice were also reported. Non-parametric tests found that the parents’ level of competence in the target language affected some of their attitudes and practices, but the children’s competence did not. The findings from this family based survey helped gain better insights into NNBP and Non-Native Bilingual First Language Acquisition (NNBFLA) children’s linguistic environments.0Doctoral Thesis4872García López, María Elena.
