In research concerning medieval towns, it is not unusual for the territorial nobility to be neglected as a political player, even to the point of being considered an outsider to the urban system. However, even a quick view will easily reveal its considerable presence in municipal life, as previously demonstrated in various studies. Furthermore, the complex nature of the presence of the nobility is so great that it becomes essential to delve into the different roles they played, as well as review the issue from a comparative standpoint. Hence, in order to accomplish this task we will focus on the analysis of various town councils in the heart of the Kingdom of Castile along the Tagus river basin.06002Sánchez Benito, José María . Thus Romualdo Nogués defined, in 1890, Spanish collectors of bourgeois origin who had joined the ranks of the aristocracy. A few years later, in 1924, the Duke of Alba’s maiden speech at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando justified his personal artistic worthiness on the basis of his ancestors’ collecting activities and the artworks they had amassed. These two examples set the scene for the research questions studied in this monographic issue. The present introduction offers a bird’s eye view of the phenomenon and continues with a few remarks about the House of Osuna which, as is well known, occupied a pivotal position in Spanish nobility during the whole of the second half of the nineteenth century.0322Urquízar Herrera, Antonio . nota come prospetto della chiesa di Santa
Eulalia dei Catalani a Palermo risulta
essere il frammento superstite di una
Loggia realizzata, e forse mai completata, a
partire dalla fine degli anni trenta del
Cinquecento.
1535. Lo studio di questo edificio e le
ipotesi sulla spazialità interna risultano
estremamente illuminanti per comprendere
una fase architettonica ancora poco nota
nella capitale del Regno di Sicilia. At a careful analysis, the mysterious
façade known as the front of St. Eulalia
of the Catalans church in Palermo turns
out to be the surviving fragment of a
Loggia, wich construction, maybe never
ended, started in the 153’s. The Catalan
community and bankers living in Palermo
are doubtless the promoters of an
architecture in ancient style, starting after
the triumphal entrance in the city of the
emperor Carlo V in 1535. The study of this
building and the hypothesis about its
interior space are extremely evealing to
understand an architectonical phase in the
capital of Sicilian Reign still not well
known.08632Marco Rosario Nobile and Scaduto, Fulvia . Only a small part of the great institutional reform project approved in the Cortes of Zamora was actually implemented, leading to dissatisfaction and the ensuing protests of the Cortes of Madrid of 1433. On the other hand, the Ordinances of Segovia were to provide an essential, if only partial, solution to this issue. While the ruling oligarchy —especially the faction led by Álvaro de Luna— visibly increased its power, leading to political animosities, the parliament of Madrid of 1435 denounced the neglect of important commitments adopted in Zamora. These concern the limits to municipal control by the high nobility, and once again the Cortes reiterates the need to deal with previously unresolved fiscal, economic, legal, and administrative issues. Along with irreconcilable differences in the objectives of the members of the oligarchy, distrust and dissatisfaction made unfeasible any project of institutional reform.06402Álvarez Palenzuela, Vicente Ángel . The lands of Lower Navarre (also known as Ultrapuertos) were immersed in a complex reality as they were located in a zone of friction between the Navarrese, the English and the French. Nevertheless, noble families that inhabited this space kept a delicate balancing act with respect to the royal Navarrese power. On the one hand, the aristocracy managed to maintain their privileges and avoided meddling by royal forces in the territory. On the other hand, they carefully chose their loyalties, often moving from one camp to the other. Meanwhile, they did not hesitate to form part of the royal Navarrese power structure within the army or the upper echelons of the administration of the Kingdom. This attests to the survival strategy and adaptability of the nobility of Lower Navarre.05062Aparicio Rosillo, Susana . estudio y la edición de un raro libro, por
sujeto. Pero relevancia que no fue excusa
para desarrollar en él, también, el proceso
que vino a denominarse pleito pleno de
hidalguía, el verdadero litigio que buscó,
en Derecho, demostrar o no la nobleza
castellana. Una obra completa en su
formulario, breve y singular, cuyo autor
libro. The purpose of this paper is to study and
publish a book that is a rarity due to the
limited number of existing copies —three,
stated F. Aguilar Piñal in his Bibliografía of
the 18th Century— and also, perhaps, due
to its unique content: a late collection
(1795) of legal forms on matters pertaining
to hidalguía, or the status of hidalgo, the
lowest form of Spanish nobility in the
Middle Ages. It is a brief but very detailed
compendium which, in the judicial style of
the Real Chancilleria of Granada, gives
particular importance to the court practice
most commonly performed by that higher
court in the 18th Century: the so-called
summary hidalguía proceeding; –a prior
hearing, without litigation, in a locality or
region, to give an individual the legitimate
status of hidalgo. Notwithstanding its
relatively minor interest, the compendium
also develops a process known as the full
hidalguía proceeding, the actual litigation
by which Castilian nobility was proven in
Law. It is a very complete work, brief and
unique, by Antonio de Orejón y Haro,
entitled Apuntamientos sobre la hidalguía
y colección de fórmulas para todos los
recursos de esta naturaleza, con la
instrucción que debe dirigir los de los
extranjeros, conforme a la práctica que
observa la Sala de los señores Alcaldes
de los Hijosdalgo de la Real Chancillería
de Granada. This paper, therefore, seeks
the publication of a new edition of the
book, and also further research on the
book’s author, his work and the topic
aquellos oportunistas conspiraban a salvo
Ambushed, in principle, they were it who
they could fight against the Republic and
they didn’t make it. In the practice,
however, that epithet was used by the
reactionary right to attack the falangists of
the rearguard. According to the
reactionaries, while those opportunists
conspired safe of the bullets to impose
their model of totalitarian state, in the
battle fronts many Spaniards fought with
nobility and spirit elevation. The
continuous concentrations, the parades,
the religious rituals outdoors, the night
rituals of brands played by the Falange,
that accusation leaned on, nevertheless,
in a bent perception of the reality. With this
article, therefore, and using unpublished
documental sources, we want to analyze
the contribution of a Falange that became
a fundamental pillar for the overthrow of
the Second Spanish Republic in very little
time.06972Parejo Fernández, José Antonio . This article is aimed at showing the important role played by a member of the Castillian low nobility at the service of Felipe V during the Spanish War of Succession. This service helped him to achieve a series of favours and acknowledgments which will send /sent him directly to the Court. This fact proved the possibilities of social promotion which brought about a military conflict to those who, being loyal to the new dynasty, took advantage of a convulsed moment to promote socially.
