A New
In their “Meter in Poetry: A New Theory”, a recent
book on generative metrics, Nigel Fabb and Morris Halle propose
a method of parsing verses that applies to every linguistic
area and to the poetry of every time. Its main part is dedicated to
parsing texts that go from ancient Greek to modern English and to
all the other “meters of the world”, while the related theory and
rules are set in the fi rst chapter. Here lies, however, the weakness
of the system, as every rule presents lots of exceptions and even
comes to admit of its contrary. Most of all, the method seems fallacious
in that it pretends to study meter as detached from rhythm
and semantics, as if the line were only a sum of graphic signs.04332<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Espósito, Edoardo" href="/fez/list/author/Espósito, Edoardo/">Espósito, Edoardo</a> . métricas que aparecen en The Art of English Poesy (1589), de
The aim of this paper is to analyse the metrical ideas
in George Puttenham’s The Art of English Poesy (1589), an ambitious
theoretical treatise on prosody, rhetoric, poetics and versification,
whose second Book, entitled Of proportion poetical, is
dedicated almost entirely to meter and rhythm. Puttenham’s verse
theory, partly original but mostly influenced by Scaliger and – to
a lesser degree – a few French writers, carefully describes English
verse and prosody and defends vernacular poetry, although the author
tries to provide a kind of guide to adapting classical meter to
English poetry.04762<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Frau, Juan" href="/fez/list/author/Frau, Juan/">Frau, Juan</a> . use for lengthy works as a means of imitating the
grandeur of the hexameter without sounding pretentious.
His "Poetica" contains the most complete, systematic and
sensitive theory of Italian meter written up to that time.
This made him a model to be followed.05122<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Paraíso, Isabel" href="/fez/list/author/Paraíso, Isabel/">Paraíso, Isabel</a> . sostiene en su Prosodia Castellana y Versificación (1892, 3 vols.),
This article studies the theory that Eduardo Benot
sets out in his Prosodia Castellana y Versificación (1892, 3 vols.)
regarding “an entirely new metric system” that some of his poet
friends and he himself cultivated between 1883 and 1892. Benot
explains the rules for versifying with two- or three-syllable feet,
which are repeated throughout the length of the poem, thereby relegating
meter and rhyme to second place. In his desire to introduce
“variety” into Spanish poetry, the author defends this type of
accentual versification, which has medieval precedents and which
will culminate in free verse based on combinations of stressed and
posible, y citando ejemplos bien conocidos y no protegidos
por derechos de autor. This article argues that the key feature of
English free verse (FV) is that it employs more contrasts
and fewer matches between linguistic and metrical units
than does traditional verse. It traces the development
of FV from a number of older modes of versifying in
English, including phrasal metre (as in the Authorised
Version of the Bible), the dol’nik (as in English ballad
meter), free rhythms (as in Arnold’s Dover Beach), polymetric
verse (as in Dryden’s Alexander’s Feast), and regular
stress-syllabic verse. The article offers a list of principles
that composers of FV in English have observed,
quantifying wherever possible, and quoting well-known
examples that are not under copyright.05232<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Duffell, Martin J." href="/fez/list/author/Duffell, Martin J./">Duffell, Martin J.</a> . juveniles de Jaime Siles aparentemente en prosa disimulan en realidad
Jaime Siles. This article aims to show how some of Jaime Siles’s
early poems, seemingly prose poems, actually follow a conventional
metrical pattern. This is all the more interesting as those
meters, masked by prose, play a semantic role in direct link with
the content of the poem. Besides, those prose poems, which are
in fact nothing but metrical palimpsests, even though they were
written in the 1970s –an era largely dominated in Spain by free
forms– seem to herald some of the renewed classical structures
Jaime Siles further develop in his later works.03972<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Gil, Henry" href="/fez/list/author/Gil, Henry/">Gil, Henry</a> . que recoge poemas de diversos temas y tonos escritos a lo
estrófica” y “ley del contrapunto rítmico”."Nuevas canciones" is an occasionally composed
book that brings together poems with different themes and tones
written over an extended period of the author’s life (from 1917 to
1936). The aim of this study is to show that, under the guise of
heterogeneity, the book does maintain unity and coherence which
are the result of a programmatic approach to metrics. This program,
which is both poetic, ideological and ethical, is based on the
reduction of the author’s range of meters and stanzas, exploiting
at the same time their full combinatorial potential, following what
we have called the "law of stanzaic variety" and the "law of rhythmic
counterpointing".04572<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Esteban Vergara, Jesús Andrés" href="/fez/list/author/Esteban Vergara, Jesús Andrés/">Esteban Vergara, Jesús Andrés</a> . Technology typically used to study the voice can also be applied in a singing lesson, aiming at facilitating students’ awareness of the three subsystems involved in voice production—breathing, oscillatory and resonatory—and their underlying physiological, aerodynamical and acoustical mechanisms. Given the variety of real-time visual feedback tools, this article provides a comprehensive overview of such tools and their current and future pedagogical applications in the voice studio. The rationale for using real-time visual feedback is discussed, including both the theoretical and practical applications of visualizing physiological, aerodynamical and acoustical aspects of voice production. The monitorization of breathing patterns is presented, displaying lung volume as the sum of abdominal and ribcage movements signals. In addition, estimates of subglottal pressure are visually displayed using a subglottal pressure meter to assist with the shaping of musical phrases in singing. As to what concerns vibratory patterns of the vocal folds and phonatory airflow, the use of electroglottography and inverse filters is applied to monitor the phonation types, voice breaks, pitch and intensity range of singers of different music genres. These vocal features, together with intentional voice distortions and intonation adjustments, are also displayed using spectrographs. As the voice is invisible to the eye, the use of real-time visual feedback is proposed as a key pedagogical approach in current and future singing lessons.
Both the old Galician hendecasyllable, typically
stressed on the 5th syllable, and the decasyllable with the same
accent have been traditionally considered utterly exceptional.
Nevertheless, the rhythmical experimentation carried out by the
Mexican poet Rubén Bonifaz Nuño resulted in the use of this
Galician hendecasyllable, systematically stressed on the 5th syllable
and combined with similar verses (mainly octosyllabic and
eneasyllabic) both in the same stanza and throughout the entire
compositions, even though the traditional meter for this type of
line was never entirely abandoned. Hence, it can be asserted that
Bonifaz Nuño has turned into usual that which had always been
exceptional.05252<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Martínez Fernández, José Enrique" href="/fez/list/author/Martínez Fernández, José Enrique/">Martínez Fernández, José Enrique</a> .
