They represent dependencies between sets of observations contained in the data. The associations established by these rules are very useful in the medical domain, for example in the predictive health field. Classic algorithms for association rule mining give rise to huge amounts of possible rules that should be filtered in order to select those most likely to be true. Most of the proposed techniques for these tasks are unsupervised. However, the accuracy provided by unsupervised systems is limited. Conversely, resorting to annotated data for training supervised systems is expensive and time‑consuming. The purpose of this research is to design a new semi‑supervised algorithm that performs like supervised algorithms but uses an affordable amount of training data. Methods: In this work we propose a new semi‑supervised data mining model that combines unsupervised techniques (Fisher’s exact test) with limited supervision. Starting with a small seed of annotated data, the model improves results (F‑measure) obtained, using a fully supervised system (standard supervised ML algorithms). The idea is based on utilising the agreement between the predictions of the supervised system and those of the unsupervised techniques in a series of iterative steps. Results: The new semi‑supervised ML algorithm improves the results of supervised algorithms computed using the F‑measure in the task of mining medical association rules, but training with an affordable amount of manually annotated data. Conclusions: Using a small amount of annotated data (which is easily achievable) leads to results similar to those of a supervised system. The proposal may be an important step for the practical development of techniques for mining association rules and generating new valuable scientific medical knowledge.0332Sánchez‑de‑Madariaga, Ricardo, Martinez‑Romo, Juan, Cantero Escribano, José Miguel y Araujo, Lourdes . The United States and Spain are both global leaders in fertility treatment with donor oocytes. Yet both countries take different approaches to how egg donation is regulated. The US model reveals a hierarchically organized form of gendered eugenics. In Spain, the eugenic aspects of donor selection are more subtle. Drawing upon fieldwork in the United States and Spain, this article examines (1) how compensated egg donation operates under two regulatory settings, (2) the implications for egg donors as providers of bioproducts, and (3) how advances in oocyte vitrification enhances the commodity quality of human eggs. By comparing these two reproductive bioeconomies we gain insight into how different cultural, medical, and ethical frameworks intersect with egg donor embodied experiences.0602Tober, Diane, Pavone, Vincenzo, Lafuente-Funes, Sara y Konvalinka, Nancy . These results have been interpreted in terms of emotional self-medication. In the present study, we analyzed whether voluntary physical activity reduces alcohol intake induced by reward downshift. Sixty-four male Wistar rats were divided into eight groups (n = 8). Thirty-two (downshifted) animals received 32% sucrose during 10 preshift sessions (5 min), followed by 4% sucrose during five postshift sessions, whereas 32 (unshifted) controls were always exposed to 4% sucrose. Immediately after each consummatory session, animals were exposed to a 2-hr two-bottle preference test involving 32% alcohol versus water or water versus water. Half of the animals had also access to a wheel for voluntary running during the preference test. The results showed lower sucrose consumption in downshifted groups compared with unshifted controls (the frustrative reward downshift effect). Reward downshift significantly increased alcohol intake, this effect being absent in downshifted animals with access to the wheel. These findings suggest that physical exercise could be useful to prevent alcohol self-medication induced by frustrative nonreward. Public Health Significance Human and nonhuman studies suggest that consumption-dependent reduction in negative affect promotes alcohol intake. This “self-medication behavior” has been observed in frustrating situations involving reward loss. This study showed (in rats) that increased alcohol intake induced by a reward devaluation event was abolished by voluntary wheel running. Physical exercise could therefore be useful to prevent the maladaptive effects of frustration on drug use.0412Elena Castejón, Esmeralda Fuentes-Verdugo, Pellón Suárez de Puga, Ricardo y Torres, Carmen . However, manual code assignment of Electronic Health Records (EHR) is a complex and time-consuming task that requires a great amount of specialised human resources. Therefore, several machine learning approaches are being proposed to assist in the assignment task. In this work we present an alternative system for automatically recommending ICD-10 codes to be assigned to EHRs. Methods: Our proposal is based on characterising ICD-10 codes by a set of keyphrases that represent them. These keyphrases do not only include those that have literally appeared in some EHR with the considered ICD-10 codes assigned, but also others that have been obtained by a statistical process able to capture expressions that have led the annotators to assign the code. Results: The result is an information model that allows to efficiently recommend codes to a new EHR based on their textual content. We explore an approach that proves to be competitive with other state-of-the-art approaches and can be combined with them to optimise results. Conclusions: In addition to its effectiveness, the recommendations of this method are easily interpretable since the phrases in an EHR leading to recommend an ICD-10 code are known. Moreover, the keyphrases associated with each ICD-10 code can be a valuable additional source of information for other approaches, such as machine learning techniques.0242Duque, Andrés, Fabregat, Hermenegildo, Araujo, Lourdes y Martinez-Romo, Juan . I argue that debiasing methods play a crucial role in this consensus, providing a warrant about the impartiality of the outcome regarding the preferences of different parties involved in the experiment. From a contractarian perspective, I contend that an epistemic pre-requisite for scientists to agree on an experimental method is that this latter is neutral regarding their competing interests. I present two medical experiments (on smallpox inoculation and Mesmerism) in which debiasing procedures such as blinding and data tabulation provided warrants of impartiality that made people agree on the experimental design even if they disagreed on the outcome.05262David Teira . Method: Measurements of head and scapular posture and muscle strength were compared between flutists with 10 or less years of practice (developing flutists; n=9), flutists with more than 10 years of practice (professional flutists; n=9) and singers (n=9). Posture was measured using a goniometer and a tape measure; strength was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: Significant differences were found between groups concerning forward head posture only; developing flutists showed a higher forward head posture compared to the other two groups (p <0.05). No significant differences were found for scapular posture neither for muscle strength. Conclusions: Developing flutists showed significantly more forward head posture. This supports the need to revise existing music curricula targeting the inclusion of compulsory disciplines on music medicine.0352Teixeira, Ziliane Lima de Oliveira, Filipa M.B., Lã y Gonçalves da Silva, Anabela . They have been designed to build state-transition models, mainly in medicine, and perform cost-effectiveness analysis. Using a causal graph that may contain several variables per cycle, MIDs can model various features of the patient without multiplying the number of states; in particular, they can represent the history of the patient without using tunnel states. OpenMarkov, an open-source tool, allows the decision analyst to build and evaluate MIDs—including cost-effectiveness analysis and several types of deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analysis—with a graphical user interface, without writing any code. This way, MIDs can be used to easily build and evaluate complex models whose implementation as spreadsheets or decision trees would be cumbersome or unfeasible in practice. Furthermore, many problems that previously required discrete event simulation can be solved with MIDs, i.e., within the paradigm of state-transition models, in which many health economists feel more comfortable.04712Díez, Francisco J., Yebra, Mar, Bermejo, Iñigo, Palacios-Alonso, Miguel Angel, Arias Calleja, Manuel, Luque, Manuel y Pérez-Martín, Jorge . Several methods, such as the half-cycle correction and the life-table method, were developed to attenuate the error introduced in Markov models by the discretization of time. Elbasha and Chhatwal have proposed alternative “corrections” based on numerical integration techniques. They present an example whose results suggest that the trapezoidal rule, which is equivalent to the half-cycle correction, is not as accurate as Simpson’s 1/3 and 3/8 rules. However, they did not take into consideration the impact of discontinuities. Objective. To propose a method for evaluating Markov models with discontinuities. Design. Applying the trapezoidal rule, we derive a method that consists of adjusting the model by setting the cost at each point of discontinuity to the mean of the left and right limits of the cost function. We then take from the literature a model with a cycle length of 1 year and a discontinuity on the cost function and compare our method with other “corrections” using as the gold standard an equivalent model with a cycle length of 1 day. Results. As expected, for this model, the life-table method is more accurate than assuming that transitions occur at the beginning or the end of cycles. The application of numerical integration techniques without taking into account the discontinuity causes large errors. The model with averaged cost values yields very small errors, especially for the trapezoidal and the 1/3 Simpson rules. Conclusion. In the case of discontinuities, we recommend applying the trapezoidal rule on an averaged model because this method has a mathematical justification, and in our empirical evaluation, it was more accurate than the sophisticated 3/8 Simpson rule.08272Pérez-Martín, Jorge, Bermejo, Iñigo y Díez, Francisco J. . Methods: Pain and posture (forward head posture, scapular posture and lumbar lordosis) were compared between two groups of preparatory and secondary school students, matched for age and sex: those who have accordion lessons, hence accordionists (n=16) and those who never have studied a musical instrument, hence non-instrumentalists (n=16). Results: Students having accordion lessons reported significantly more pain in the shoulder, wrist/hand and thoracic regions (p<0.05), showed a significantly more forward head posture (accordionists (median±IQ distance) = 35.6º ± 7.8º, non-instrumentalists (median±IQ distance) = 45.3º±10.8º; p <0.05), and a significantly increased lumbar lordosis (accordionists (median±IQ 14 distance) = 55.5º ± 30.6º, non-musicians (median±IQ distance)= 39.0º ± 3.9º, p <0.05). No significant differences were found for scapular posture between groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that children and adolescents who play the accordion have an increased forward head posture and lumbar lordosis and a tendency to report more pain than children and adolescents who do no play any musical instrument0772Liliana, Aparicio, Filipa M.B., Lã y Silva, Anabela G. . The variational method has been improved by adding a new term in the optical flow equation that incorporates tracking points with high stability of phase. Results were obtained through simulated and real data, and were validated by manual tracking and with respect to a reference state-of-the-art method: harmonic phase imaging (HARP). The error, measured in pixels per frame, obtained with the proposed variational method is one order of magnitude smaller than the one achieved by the reference method, and it requires a lower computational cost.0462Carranza-Herrezuelo, N., Bajo, A., Sroubek, F., Santa Marta Pastrana, Cristina, Cristobal, G., Santos, A. y Ledesma-Carbayo, M.J. . Methods: Studies were sought from PubMed, Web of Science; Academic Search Complete, Science Direct and Scielo. Databases were searched since 1st January 2000 until December 2012. Two reviewers screened titles and abstracts, and assessed full reports for potentially eligible studies. One reviewer extracted information on musicians’ characteristics, study methods and study quality. When possible a meta-analysis of pain prevalence estimates was performed. Results: A total of 18 studies were included in this systematic review. Studies assessed pain prevalence in general and the prevalence of pain affecting playing capacity for different time periods (point prevalence, one week prevalence, one year prevalence, month prevalence and lifetime prevalence). The prevalence of pain in general, across all groups of musicians and periods of interest over which pain was assessed varied between 29.0% and 90.0%, whereas the prevalence of pain affecting playing capacity varied between 25.8% and 84.4%. There was a tendency for guitar players to have the highest pain prevalence. The most affected body regions were low back (9.8% - 66.7%) and neck (9.8% - 48.5%). Conclusions: Pain prevalence is high among musicians, independently of the pain definition used. Health and educational policy makers should become aware of the high lifetime pain prevalence affecting performance practices, so that pain associated mechanisms are investigated and preventive strategies can be implemented and tested.0452Silva, Anabela G., Filipa M.B., Lã y Afreixo, Vera . Its incidence numbers are continuously increasing, and they are expected to keep on doing it for the next decades. Pancreatic Cancer is one of the most enigmatic among all the known cancer types. Even though the incidence numbers for PC are not so high as the ones for other diseases, its death ratio is astonishing. Life expectancy for people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is less than six months. These numbers set up a difficult research environment where the characteristics of a risk population have not been, yet property identified, and where there is a lack of epidemiological information that makes further investigation in early detection very problematic. For the last decades, Artificial Intelligence has been demonstrating its benefits when applied to medical researches, since it can outperform human ability to identify trends and patterns inside huge datasets. In this work, I propose a novel and robust approach to identify the characteristic of a risk population in pancreatic cancer data that has been provided by surveys and researches performed in the whole Europe. This kind of data presents noise, bias and missing values that usually straiten the capabilities of the AI methods. The proposed system uses an ensemble of techniques that brings the ability to first recover the dataset and to later identify the most informative features that can be used to determine the characteristics of a risk population, to build a risk score for the epidemiological factors of Pancreatic Cancer.0Doctoral Thesis3372Sobrino García, Víctor Manuel. Obstacles to the cross‐border recognition of medical prescriptions in the EU . 2016. Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (España). Despite evidence for this connection existing since the 3rd century B.C., there are still controversies and lack of information about this area, especially regarding the effects on the female western classical singing voice. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the importance of undertaking further research in this field. Therefore, a revision of previous research, exploring the extent to which sexual hormonal concentrations can contribute to the well-being of a singer’s voice and career, from both psychological and biological points of view, will be presented. Additionally, further investigation in the field of hormonal related medication and its effects on singing voice quality will be undertaken.0482Filipa M.B., Lã y Davidson, W. . In this work we present a multistep tailored preprocessing consisting mainly of brain extraction, intensity contrast enhancement, subject based slice cropping and intensity standardization. The segmentation task is then performed by a fully convolutional neural network with attention gates which employs a customized loss function based on the dice similarity coecient and the F1 score. Experimental results on the white matter hyperintensities segmentation challenge [Kuijf et al., 2019] show that our proposed preprocessing improves segmentation, that attention gated U-Net further improves segmentation tasks compared to the original U-Net and our proposed loss function has the potential to improve lesion-wise F1 on DSC based segmentations.0Doctoral Thesis2982Duque Asens, Pablo. This trend is known as XAI and brings certain advantages such as increased confidence in the decision-making process, improved capacity for error analysis, verification of results and possibility of model refinement, among others. In this work we have focused on interpreting the predictions of recently developed deep learning models through different visualization techniques. The use case we introduce is the detection of breast cancer through the classification of mammographies, since the medical field is widely benefited by the contributions of XAI methods. Furthermore, the target neural networks are based on recent and poorly explored architectures. These are the Vision Transformer model, built through attention blocks, and EfficientNet, designed to improve the performance of convolutional networks.0Doctoral Thesis2812Rodríguez Sampayo, Marta. The rapidly evolving changes required the methods of digital anthropology, which allowed an understanding of embodiments of care. Under volatile conditions and intersections between the personal and the public, mental health professionals carried and invested care in communities and (re)discovered new challenges and vulnerabilities. Medical agencies revealed symbolic roles, meanings, and qualities of care. This article proposes opportunities for the discipline of public anthropology to serve as a medium for the engagement of collective solutions. The challenge is, however, to provide easy, quick and relevant access to the vast amount of information that is available. One step towards facilitating information access to online health data is opinion mining. Even though the classification of patient opinions into positive and negative has been previously tackled, most works make use of machine learning methods and bags of words. Our first contribution is an extensive evaluation of different features, including lexical, syntactic, semantic, network-based, sentiment-based and word embeddings features to represent patient-authored texts for polarity classification. The second contribution of this work is the study of polar facts (i.e. objective information with polar connotations). Traditionally, the presence of polar facts has been neglected and research in polarity classification has been bounded to opinionated texts. We demonstrate the existence and importance of polar facts for the polarity classification of health information. Material and methods We annotate a set of more than 3500 posts to online health forums of breast cancer, crohn and different allergies, respectively. Each sentence in a post is manually labeled as “experience”, “fact” or “opinion”, and as “positive”, “negative” and “neutral”. Using this data, we train different machine learning algorithms and compare traditional bags of words representations with word embeddings in combination with lexical, syntactic, semantic, network-based and emotional properties of texts to automatically classify patient-authored contents into positive, negative and neutral. Beside, we experiment with a combination of textual and semantic representations by generating concept embeddings using the UMLS Metathesaurus. Results We reach two main results: first, we find that it is possible to predict polarity of patient-authored contents with a very high accuracy (≈ 70 percent) using word embeddings, and that this considerably outperforms more traditional representations like bags of words; and second, when dealing with medical information, negative and positive facts (i.e. objective information) are nearly as frequent as negative and positive opinions and experiences (i.e. subjective information), and their importance for polarity classification is crucial.0352Carrillo de Albornoz, Jorge, Rodríguez-Vidal, Javier y Plaza, Laura .

This work is located in ttie years

Charity Town Census was defined,
at the beginning oflast century as
the census in which were registered
people susceptible of receive
sanitary assistance from the Town

registration, almost every wageworker
in Seville (and Spain), could
take part of the Charity Census. The
main reason for this situation was
obviously the paltry salary of the
workers. Furthermore, it is analysed
the city distribution ofpeople

concentration in particular áreas of
the city shaping a true urban
geography of poverty, with an
Because of the out-of-date literary and archaeological research into curing
waters in Aquitania between the first century B. C. and the sixth century
A. D, it is necessary to start again its study, which appears to be rich
and c'omplex.
The interest of this enquiry lies in the various tackied subjects, especially
those dealing with antigüe medicine (Did thermalism exist as a medical
specialization? And if it did, then how was it practised?), religious
beliefs connected with waters'frequentation (Which were the invoked
gods? What did the devouts'expectations look like?), the architecture of
thermae and water-pumping system, the spas'frequentation (diéntele, accomodatlon,
entertainment,...).
The multiplicity of identified sites is also worth studying: until now,
about 150 of them had been registered in the área between Loire river
and Pyrénées mountains. They are both spas and water-sanctuaries or
simple springs venerated by popular devotion.05262Grangé, Bénedicte .
This study is planned as an overall view in which a series of hypothesis

elements during the Visigothic period in Hispania, the starting point are
the "Etymologies" of Isidoro of Sevilla; although it is nearer to a transmission
of an inherited culture and, thus, it has a valué of erudition more
than a testimonial, about the existence of a cult to waters. Another important
source is the work De correctione rusticorum by Martin Dumiense,
Bishop of Braga, which is referred to the survival of magical or supersticious
believes; and also, some conciliar canons. Some spas are mentioned
in use in Visigothic times. Tlie study is completed with a section of
other constructions and an appendix referred to curative waters and medical
practice.06882Velázquez Sorieno, Isabel and Ripoll López, Gisela . It is therefore essential to keep making progress in improving the prognosis and quality of life of affected patients. One way to advance along this pathway is to uncover connections between other disorders associated with HIV/AIDS—so that they can be anticipated and possibly mitigated. We propose to achieve this by using Association Rules (ARs). They allow us to represent the dependencies between a number of diseases and other specific diseases. However, classical techniques systematically generate every AR meeting some minimal conditions on data frequency, hence generating a vast amount of uninteresting ARs, which need to be filtered out. The lack of manually annotated ARs has favored unsupervised filtering, even though they produce limited results. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised system, able to identify relevant ARs among HIV-related diseases with a minimal amount of annotated training data. Our system has been able to extract a good number of relationships between HIV-related diseases that have been previously detected in the literature but are scattered and are often little known. In humans, an intensification of the desire for the drug induced by environmental cues—incubation of drug craving—has been observed. In rodents, this phenomenon has been modeled by studying drug seeking under extinction after different times of drug withdrawal (or using a natural reinforcer). Although much progress has been made, an integrated approach simultaneously studying different drug classes and natural reward and examining different brain regions is lacking. Lewis rats were used to study the effects of cocaine, heroin, and sucrose seeking incubation on six key brain regions: the nucleus accumbens shell/core, central/basolateral amygdala, and dorsomedial/ventromedial prefrontal cortex. We analyzed PSD95 and gephyrin protein levels, gene expression of glutamatergic, GABAergic and endocannabinoid elements, and amino acid transmitter levels. The relationships between the areas studied were examined by Structural Equation Modelling. Pathways from medial prefrontal cortex and basolateral complex of the amygdala to central nucleus of the amygdala, but not to the nucleus accumbens, were identified as common elements involved in the incubation phenomenon for different substances. These results suggest a key role for the central nucleus of amygdala and its cortical and amygdalar afferences in the incubation phenomenon, and we suggest that by virtue of its regulatory effects on glutamatergic and GABAergic dynamics within amygdalar circuits, the endocannabinoid system might be a potential target to develop medications that are effective in the context of relapse.0192Roura‐Martínez, David, Ucha, Marcos, Orihuel, Javier y et al. . The increased risk of developing this syndrome resulting from established modifiable risk factors, such as depressive episodes, is currently a subject of interest. The aim of this study was to review the scientific evidence that addresses the relationship between depression and dementia. A bibliographic search of the PubMed and PsycInfo databases for articles published over the past 20 years was conducted with the following medical subject heading terms: depression or depressive, dementia, and incidence or cohort studies. After articles meeting the inclusion criteria were selected, relevant moderating variables were grouped as sample characteristics, methodological characteristics, extrinsic characteristics, and outcome variables. The 26 selected studies resulted in a sample comprising 1,760,262 individuals. Statistical analysis revealed a pooled relative risk for the development of dementia of 1.82 (95% CI=1.62–2.06). The primary variables evaluated were the diagnostic methods for depression and dementia and the presence of depression. Other variables, such as mean age, methodological quality of each study, follow-up time, and publication year, were also evaluated. Age was statistically but not clinically significant. No relevant publication bias or alterations in the results were found when accounting for the quality of the studies. It is recommended that new moderating variables be evaluated or that existing variables be reformulated in future studies.0392Fernández Fernández, Roberto, Íbias, Javier y Maciá Antón, María Araceli . A cohort study involving 20 female professional voice users was carried out assessing irregularity of vocal fold vibration, based on: 1) period-to-period frequency peaks (CFx), and 2) period-to-period amplitude peaks (CAx) in the cycle-to-cycle excitation of the vocal tract. These vocal measures and blood samples were collected at three points of the menstrual cycle, for both natural and OCP cycles. No significant differences were found in vocal parameters assessed between the natural and OCP cycles. The intake of this OCP was not found to have a systematic effect on the vocal parameters studied. Based on these results the modern OCP preparations can be considered safe medications which do not have a negative effect on voice quality in professional voice users.0532Filipa M.B., Lã, Howard, David M., Ledger, William, Davidson, Jane W. y Jones, Georgina . PD includes both “motor” and “non-motor” symptoms, one of which is pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of pain in patients with PD. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 250 patients diagnosed with PD, 70% of which had mild to moderate PD (stages 2/3 of Hoehn and Yahr scale). The average age was 67.4 years, and the average duration since PD diagnosis was 7.1 years. Relevant data collected from PD patients were obtained from their personal medical history. Results: The prevalence of pain was found to be high (82%), with most patients (79.2%) relating their pain to PD. Disease duration was correlated with the frequency of intense pain (R: 0.393; P < 0.05). PD pain is most frequently perceived as an electrical current (64%), and two pain varieties were most prevalent (2.60 ± 0.63). Our findings confirm links between pain, its evolution over time, its multi-modal character, the wide variety of symptoms of PD, and the female sex. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the pain felt by PD patients is mainly felt as an electrical current, which contrasts with other studies where the pain is described as burning and itching. Our classification is innovative because it is based on anatomy, whereas those of other authors were based on syndromes.0222Camacho Conde, José Antonio y Campos Arillo, Victor Manuel . Effective UVC penetration through PS materials, regardless of their thickness (0.16 and 0.40 mm) has been observed. However, the penetration effectiveness could be affected by the thickness of the PS material. Achieving optimal post-packaging UVC treatment requires a thorough evaluation of chemical composition and material thickness, especially in pharmaceutical and medical packaging industries. Preliminary results reveal minimal degradation in UVC-irradiated PS packaging samples, as supported by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy characterization. Minor variations could be attributed to intrinsic PS materials properties and/or their respective background, rather than the influence of UVC radiation. Consequently, PS materials exhibit resilience under the experimental conditions following UVC irradiation treatment. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of thermoluminescence (TL) emissions evaluates several commercial dosimeter materials for UVC radiation detection. The TLD-100 and TLD-200 dosimeters show potential as UVC detectors, displaying distinct responses linked to the non-ionizing component of UVC radiation at 310 ◦C and in the range of 150–250 ◦ C, respectively. However, the TLD-400 and GR-200 dosimeters are not suitable for UVC detection due to their spread TL emissions considering intensity and curve shape. This UVC-TL analysis consistently detects radiation in the proposed commercial dosimeter materials one-hour post-exposure, providing assurance that healthcare materials have been irradiated. Such analysis enhances reliability during extended UVC exposures, offering valuable insights for industries employing UVC-irradiated materials, particularly in healthcare applications.0202Boronat, C, Correcher, V., García-Guinea, J y Bravo Yagüe, Juan Carlos . The increase of allergy cases and the severity of the reactions motivates the prediction of atmospheric concentrations in order to minimize the exposure to risky pollen levels. Also, it is of large interest for clinical institutions in order to apply preventive measures and plan in advance the implications of an increase number of allergy patients. Phenological and meteorological parameters characterize the stages of vegetation development during the growing season. Thus, they can be potentially related to the biological definition of plant phenology. In this thesis, time series of airborne pollen concentrations and meteorological variables measured at the region of Madrid were used to predict risk pollen concentrations for patients. Detailed relationships were established between future airborne concentrations, meteorological data, and flowering states derived from the inner information of the underlying data via computational intelligence models. Therefore, these data were used to develop predictive models for a range of forecast horizons. The proposal will be beneficial to the medical fields related with allergies affections planning and treatment, demonstrating that computational intelligence holds a great potential for aerobiology. In this research, we demonstrated several novel approaches that significantly contribute to the field of aerobiology including: (i) developing a computational intelligencebased model to predict risk concentration levels, and consequently the start and end of pollen season, for long term horizons up to 6 months, on which none of previous works succeed to obtain satisfactory results, (ii) identifying and characterizing the most influential factors which induce the presence of high airborne concentrations for a given set of horizons, using an assumption-free approach which supports biometeorological findings from other authors. The findings of the research are related to producing more accurate prediction models and providing a comprehensive analysis of the relationship of airborne concentrations with various meteorological parameters.
