Wireless technologies are a set of information and communications technologies (ICTs) involving radio transmission (such as mobile or satellite technologies) that are extensively used in tourism and hospitality, but which have not yet been studied comprehensively. Design/methodology/approach This study is a mixed methods review combining a quantitative and qualitative approach and including a systematic review of the academic literature since 2000. Findings Contrary to the prevailing focus of study on mobile technologies, the authors open the field to other technologies (such as Zigbee or Bluetooth), and in a particular highlight, the large role played by satellite technology in tourism and how this is reflected in the literature. In literature reviews linking tourism and ICTs, the authors find that excluding some journals may leave out notable aspects for any systematic analysis. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of wireless technologies in a sensor-based convergence between the physical and digital worlds. Originality/value The contribution is mainly twofold: first, the authors develop the literature on tourism with a better understanding of the role played by these technologies in supporting tourism and hospitality, by updating sources and research work; second, the authors take a holistic, all-encompassing approach, providing a truly comprehensive view of the literature on tourism and ICTs, in which wireless technologies have always been approached with fragmented or limited scope, lacking a view in the round.0342Navío Marco, Julio, Ruiz Gómez, Luis Manuel y Sevilla Sevilla, Claudia . Ten years after its publication in 2008, we revisit this paper with a view to observing the main changes in eTourism over these years, analysing the strategic lines that are driving its evolution, and verifying the fulfilment of the tendencies anticipated by Buhalis and Law. Their diagnosis has been very accurate and, given the rapidity of the technological changes, it is appropriate to highlight the changes that this sector has experienced since then.0392Navío Marco, Julio, Ruiz Gómez, Luis Manuel y Sevilla Sevilla, Claudia . Road traffic is experiencing a drastic growth in recent years, thereby increasing the every day traffic congestion problems, especially in metropolitan areas. Information Technologies and transportation infrastructure help to manage transportation systems in an accurate and effective manner. Intelligent Transportation Systems will play a leading role in our society, especially in scenarios such as warning drivers about vehicle accidents in real time, efficiently managing vehicle information required by governments and authorities, or even being able to offer drivers a variety of additional services. In vehicular environments, wireless technologies enable real-time communication between vehicles (V2V) and between vehicles and the infrastructure (V2I). These technologies allow vehicles and traffic control systems to use information about traffic congestion in specific areas, which provides the possibility of selecting fast routes avoiding traffic jams. A critical issue, especially in urban areas, is the occurrence of traffic accidents, since it could generate traffic jams and the emergency services arrival time can determine the difference between life or death for people involved in the accident. In this Master’s Thesis, we propose and compare different systems with the aim of re-routing vehicles circulating in an urban scenario when a vehicle accident takes place, in order to reduce the emergence services arrival time. To do this, we consider two simple routing techniques and two systems based on evolutionary strategies, since the system runtime is as critical as obtaining an optimal solution. In addition, we propose a system able to estimate traffic density by using V2I communications, since traffic density is a key factor when routing vehicles.0Doctoral Thesis2532Barrachina Villalba, Javier. On the other hand, other research lines have recently explored the phenomenon of Economic Complexity (EC), providing new metrics to quantify this decisive factor for the prediction of economic growth and other human relevant variables. This article explores these two trends with the construction of two composite indexes. Then, it evaluates their explanatory power to predict economic growth, first separately, and afterwards together. The results show they can predict economic growth and improve their predictive capacity by working combined. In the conclusions, some difficulties and challenges for the development of these metrics are analyzed0402Jurado González, Javier y Gómez Barroso, José Luis . The study analyzes attitudes and needs of 424 teachers and it assesses teaching practices developed with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Data is analyzed through mixed methods with various instruments using descriptive analysis, factor analysis and a detailed analysis regarding teaching practice from 21 cases. In conclusion, one third of teachers properly integrate Educational Technology into practice. Moreover 62% of teachers support the applied one laptop per child policy and have positive feedback in this regard, however two thirds of the teachers in the sample integrate technology with isolated activities, adapting persisting traditional pedagogical models. There are deficiencies concerning school performance, group work, problem solving and communication in learning activities. Therefore, students need educational guidance for the appropriate use of ICT in the learning process.02962Sáez López, José Manuel y Rodriguez Torres, Javier . This is an exploratory and descriptive analysis based on a sample of 311 students, 108 teachers and 15 school principals. According to the findings, teenagers use the Internet to look for information and entertainment; the expansion of mobile technology among them offers numerous educational opportunities; and insufficient training for teachers on how to integrate information and communications technologies (icts) into the learning process is a top challenge. The existence of icts in schools has been confirmed, but not their use. Local and national efforts are helping to reduce the digital divide and promote equality of opportunity for young people.06342Farfán Sossa, Sulma, Medina Rivilla, Antonio y Cacheiro González, María Luz . However, the potential and opportunities offered by these technologies are not fully available across society due to huge differences in their use and uptake, that is, what has traditionally been called the digital divide. Current research indicates that this divide is intimately connected to economic inequalities and social exclusion. The digital divide manifests primarily for those groups where economic resources are scarcest, and among such groups we find the lowest rates of device ownership and personal internet connection. Secondary to this, and the focus of the majority of literature on the subject, the digital divide further aggravates existing socioeconomic differences and even generates new forms of social exclusion. Taking a positive point of view, this situation does also imply that eliminating the digital divide could help alleviate social exclusion. Nevertheless, for social and educational intervention programmes to have any real effect on social exclusion, we need to have a more indepth understanding of processes and variables that cause it at an individual level. In this way we could design interventions tailored to the personal interests, needs, limitations, and potential of every individual and that would prioritise particularly disadvantaged groups, which, according to this study include older people, the less well educated, those with health problems, and the unemployed.0402López Aguado, Mercedes, Gutiérrez Provecho, Lourdes, Quintanal Díaz, José y García Llamas, José Luis . This research analyses a peer learning experience in the asynchronous part of hybrid teaching, in one of the largest blended universities in Europe, promoting students to act as teachers of their peers, by preparing digital content (videos) for the course. This article studies whether there are behaviour patterns and different perceptions associated between students who act as teachers, and those who only act as students. The results indicate, among other findings, that students demand this type of activities, and value them very positively. Specifically, the “teachers” consider that this activity increases their motivation for the subject and their performance; they also consider that it significantly improves their creativity and communication skills, and they would definitely participate in the project again. The assessment of the students who merely view the materials is also very positive, and they prefer a learning method through classmate videos than the traditional learning method with printed materials. The research is also a boost to finding ways to promote learning among equals in non-classroom teaching in digital environments03662Mendieta-Aragón, Adrián, Arguedas-Sanz, Raquel, Ruiz-Gómez, Luis Manuel y Navío-Marco, Julio . Complex problems in science, engineering, or business are being solved by teams of people working closely with one another. However, forming teams of experts is a computationally challenging problem that requires powerful solution techniques. A metaheuristic algorithm that incorporates some of the principles of quantum computing into an evolutionary structure is presented. The resulting Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm (QEA) has the ability to produce an adequate balance between intensification and diversification during the search process. Numerical experiments have shown that the QEA is able to significantly improve the quality of the solutions for hard instances of the team formation problem, particularly when compared to a standard genetic algorithm. The successful performance of the algorithm requires careful parameter tuning, as well as a mechanism to effectively share information across the population of candidate solutions.0Doctoral Thesis5682Álvarez Lois, Pedro Pablo. The study seeks to identify the ethical principles that cause the greatest concern among the population, analyzing these characteristics among different actors. The main study analyses the difference between Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professionals and the rest of the population. Along with this study, we conducted a gender study; in addition, we studied differences between university students, classified as future professionals who can work in Artificial Intelligence, and other university students. We believe that this work is a starting point for an informed debate in the scientific community and industry on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence based on the classification of ethical principles made by the EU, which can be extrapolated to any analysis carried out on the use of data to apply them in algorithms based on Artificial Intelligence.0402López Rivero, Alfonso José, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Beato, M. Due to the spectacular increase on the demand for novel information services, the IoT-based infrastructures are more and more characterized by their geographical sparsity and increasing demands giving rise to the need of moving from a cloud to a fog model: a novel deployment paradigm characterized by the provisioning of elastic resources geographically located as close as possible to the end user. Despite the large number of wireless sensor networks already available in the market, there are still many issues to be addressed on the design and deployment of robust network platforms capable of meeting the demand and quality of fog-based systems. In this paper, we undertake the design and development of a wireless sensor node for fog computing platforms addressing two of the main issues towards the development and deployment of robust communication services, namely, energy consumption and network resilience provisioning. Our design is guided by examining the relevant macroarchitecture features and operational constraints to be faced by the network platform. We based our solution on the integration of network hardware platforms already available on the market supplemented by smart power management and network resilience mechanisms0362Castillo Cara, Manuel, Huaranga Junco, Edgar, Quispe Montesinos, Milner, Orozco Barbosa, Luis y Arias Antúnez, Enrique .
