poderes para imponer su política colonial,
pero no era posible parar el proceso
descolonizador que sacudía el mundo y
contra el cual no tenían ninguna política
que no fuese la guerra y a ella se
dedicaron con todas sus fuerzas pero
fracasaron.
Salazar and Caetano had full powers to
impose their colonial policy, but it wasn’t
possible to stop the decolonization
process which was shaking the world
.They had no policy but the war to which
they devoted themselves although they
failled. The difference between both
presidents was that Caetano was sure that
he was going to lose the war,
nevertheless, he fought until the end
because he thought that the colonization
was the foundation of the Estado Novo’s
ideology. He preferred to be demoted
instead of finishing with the secular
inheritance of the Nation because he was
convinced that Portgual without colonies
would become denaturalized and then it
would lose its independence and, although
he didn’t say it, the Spanish hug was
implicit in that strategic thought In my
opinion there was another problem: the
Empire only could stay by means the
dictatorship and, although the colonialism
was widespread among Portuguese
society,13 years of war couldn’t have been
suffered by a democratic system.06072<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Sánchez Cervelló, Josep" href="/fez/list/author/Sánchez Cervelló, Josep/">Sánchez Cervelló, Josep</a> . los ‘60 como un ciclo de cambio
estructural muy rápido en la sociedad
portuguesa, años en los que una
verdadera revolución industrial se
desarrolla a par del éxodo rural, la
emigración masiva y la politización
creciente en consecuencia de la Guerra
Colonial (1961-74), el marcelismo nos
aparece como la última oportunidad de la
dictadura portuguesa ante un proceso de
modernización y masificación de la
sociedad que tenía mucho de inevitable.Reading the 1950’s and, mostly, the
1960’s as an historical cycle of structural
and speedy change in Portuguese society,
a time of real industrial revolution together
with rural exodus, massive emigration and
growing politicization as consequence of
the Colonial War (1961-74), Marcelism
emerges as the last chance of the
Portuguese dictatorship to control a
modernization and massification process
which had become clearly inevitable.05482<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Loff, Manuel" href="/fez/list/author/Loff, Manuel/">Loff, Manuel</a> .
