Design/methodology/approach – In total, 150 questionnaires were applied; the questionnaire was adapted from Food Choice Questionnaire (Steptoe et al., 1995). Data were analyzed by means of multivariate statistics with factor and cluster analysis. In order to identify statistical differences ( p o 0.05), Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney nonparametric tests were performed. Findings – Ten factors or motivations were found: social ecological concern, nutritional content, sensory aspects, certifications, naturalness, specialized consumption, trust in the seller, economic aspects, health and availability. Four groups were obtained and called: citizen consumers, in-process citizen consumers, conscious social consumers with no interest in certifications and conscious pragmatic consumers. It is concluded that differentiated consumers visit these establishments and their motivations are diverse, albeit they concur, to a varying extent, with the objectives of AFNs, finding a mixture of hedonic and ethical motivations. Practical implications – This sort of works about specific places of consumption as well as specific consumers, in this case ecological, contributes to the development of future social research on other contexts, different consumers and products. Originality/value – This sort of research has been carried out in various European cities, with a number of foods and over various sales channels; however, at present there is a debate around AFNs and the veracity of their goals. This way, the present work can contribute with an answer to whether the goals match the motivations of consumers.0732Escobar Lópeza, Sttefanie Yenitza, Espinoza Ortegaa, Angélica, Lozano Cabedo, Carmen, Aguilar Criadob, Encarnación y Amaya Corchuelod, Santiago . European Union has established thresholds for certain gases, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2). If these thresholds are exceeded, institutions of each city belonging to the EU, must activate measures previously defined, to go down NO2 concentrations. Meteorological parameters are related to episodes of high/low NO2 concentrations. In this paper, pollution time series and meteorological features measured in the Madrid region were used to predict NO2 concentrations. Detailed relationships between NO2 concentrations and meteorological data were established through computational intelligence models. Therefore, these data were used to develop a predictive model. The proposal shows good precision in the prediction, proving computational intelligence has great potential in the pollution time series forecasting. When constructing a prediction model, in addition obtaining good accuracy, it is important to know why that prediction is made. Interpreting the output of the computational intelligence model is difficult due to the architecture of the model itself. A SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations) approach is applied to interpret the complex model outputs. This method assigns each feature a value of importance for a particular prediction. Three SHAP-based explanation methods are compared to determine which method is more suitable for the pollution time series data and for the computational intelligence model chosen. In this research therefore, a model based on computational intelligence is developed to predict the levels of NO2 concentrations. Through methods based on explanations we will obtain a deeper vision of how the computational intelligence model behaves on the pollution time series, allowing an increase in the confidence of the users on the results obtained from the prediction model. As a product of this study, a short version of this document has been sent for consideration in the Ecological Informatics1 international journal on computational ecology and ecological data science.0Doctoral Thesis5312Vega García, María. This species was reintroduced 30 years ago in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, Spain, and its population has since grown exponentially, reaching high densities in some areas. We tested the suitability of two complementary indicators: browsing damage on woody species and the percentage of moss cover loss on rocky outcrops. For this purpose, we used a mathematical approach to zone the natural protected area according to the historical presence of the species and established five different Iberian ibex pressure classes (Classes I–V). Our results showed a direct link between Iberian ibex pressure and vegetation status. Model predictions suggested 10% moss loss in the areas with low pressure (Class I) but 64% loss in the areas with high pressure (Class III), mostly due to ungulate trampling on rocks. Similarly, browsing damage increased with increasing pressure classes for different woody species. Low palatable plant species such as Pinus spp. showed little change in browsing damage for increasing ungulate pressure whereas more palatable plants (e.g., Erica arborea) showed significantly greater browsing damage variation across pressure classes (i.e., high sensitive to herbivory pressure). Both, moss cover on rocks and widely distributed palatable woody plants proved useful ecological indicators for monitoring ungulate populations in mountainous areas with a diverse array of habitats (e.g., rocky vs. woody). This methodology may help select the most suitable indicators for each type of ecosystem or dominant habitat in ungulate-dominated ecosystems.0272Refoyo, P., Peláez, M., García‑Rodríguez, M., López‑Sánchez, A. y Perea, Ramón . A qualitative study in Spainbibliuned:DptoEA-FECO-Articulos-Mcuesta0001The financial exclusion phenomenon has been approached from different perspectives. After reviewing the recent literature, we adopt a financial ecology approach and propose a comprehensive framework to analyse the different types of difficulties (access, use and perception) that vulnerable financial consumers face in relationships with banking institutions as well as their underlying causes. We consider financial inclusion as the sustainable provision of financial services and products and an adjustment to individual needs. We examine a special group of urban vulnerable consumers: underbanked people facing poverty and social exclusion. Data were obtained from focus groups and were coded and analysed using qualitative data analysis software. The results show that use difficulties predominate, followed by perception difficulties. Bank pressure and lack of financial training stood out among the main causes of these financial difficulties. We conclude that poorer neighbourhoods constitute a distinctive financial ecology produced by the ‘discrimination’ of a significant number of their inhabitants in the use of mainstream financial services. The study provides evidence of the socio-spatial nature of the exclusion process and calls for further research on the role of policy responses to restrict abusive practices.04002Cuesta-González, Marta de la, Paredes-Gázquez, Juan Diego, Ruza, Cristina y Fernández-Olit, Beatriz . The objective is to explore if there exists a non-linear relationship between the whole financial system development and a wide array of measures of environmental sustainability and degradation, namely adjusted net savings, greenhouse gas, CO2, methane, nitrous oxide emissions and ecological footprint. We define a new Financial Environmental Kuznets Curve (FEKC) by introducing the square term of financial development on the environment-finance relationship. Empirical results prove the existence of non-linear relationships between the composite index of financial development and environmental degradation for the group of advanced economies. In the case of methane, we validate the presence of an inverted-U shape association in line with the FEKC hypothesis, while for greenhouse gas and CO2 the link follows a U-shaped pattern. The impact of financial development on environmental sustainability is monotonically positive and statistically significant while the ecological footprint is not statistically linked with the level of financial development within G7 countries. Economic growth, human capital, population density and primary energy consumption appear as significant drivers of environmental quality and sustainability.0532Ruza, Cristina y Caro Carretero, Raquel .
The economic-environmental valuationmethods are useful tools to achieve the integration of the three
aspects on spatial planning: ecological, economic and social. They value the three aspects inmonetary units,
following themarket rules, tomake themcomparable asmuch spatially as temporally.
However, their results cannot bemapped at now, and therefore they cannot be used in the planning in a spatial
context.
This paper evaluates themain causes of the incompatibility between themethods and its spatial application,
as well as the possibilities of adaptation that would allow over it.
Currently, estimations of no-use value, non-tangible aspects, as the preservation for the future generations
of certain species, cannot be mapped except maybe in a globe scale. However, other environmental aspects
could bemapped with certain adaptations that are still to be developed.06902Gómez Jiménez, Inmaculada, Martínez de Anguita d'Huart, Pablo and Romero Calcerrada, Raúl . These small highland freshwater habitats remain largely unexplored at the microbial level. The aim of this work is to report the presence in these habitats of genetic sequences of microbial eukaryotes that are pathogens and potential pathogens of humans, wildlife, cattle, crops as well as of other microorganisms. We sequenced the hypervariable region v4 of the 18S rDNA gene from environmental DNA of sediments taken from 21 rock basins in a National Park in Spain. More than a fifth (21%) of the eukaryotic Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) found are ascribed to pathogenic (within 11 Phyla) and potential pathogenic (within 1 phylum, the Chytridiomycota) microorganisms. Some OTUs retrieved are of agro-economic and public health importance (e.g., Pythium spp., Lagenidium spp., Candida spp. and Vermamoeba vermiformis). In 86% of the basins, the most abundant OTUs were affiliated to Chytridiomycota, a broad fungal group including saprozoic and parasitic taxa. Two OTUs affiliated to chytrids were significantly correlated with high concentrations of heavy metals. The high proportion of chytrid-like microbial sequences found emphasises the role of these freshwater habitats for adding knowledge regarding the ecological trade-offs of the still rather unknown Chytridiomycota. Our results show that rain-fed rock basins may be model habitats for the study and surveillance of microbial community dynamics and genetics of (mainly opportunistic) microbial pathogens.0312Velasco-González, Ismael, Lara, Enrique, Singer, David, Cos-Gandoy, Amaya de, García-Rodríguez, Manuel, Murciano, Antonio, Pérez-Uz, Blanca, Williams, Richard, Sanchez-Jimenez, Abel y Martín-Cereceda, Mercedes . MP ingestion in sediment-feeders holothurians (mean value 12.67 ± 7.31 MPs/individual) was statistically higher than ingestion in bivalves and fish (mean 4.83 ± 5.35 and 3 ± 4.44 MPs/individual, respectively). The main ingested polymers were polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. The levels of BPS, BPF, and DEHP were highest in bivalves' soft tissue; BPA and DBP had the highest levels in the holothurians’ muscle. In addition, the levels of all plasticizers assessed were lowest in fish muscle; only BPA levels in fish were higher than in bivalves, with intermediate values between those of bivalves and holothurians. This study provides data on exposure to MPs and plasticizers of different species inhabiting Cabrera Marine Protected Area (MPA) and highlights the differences in MP ingestion and levels of plasticizers between species with different ecological characteristics and feeding strategies.0722Rios-Fuster, Beatriz, Alomar, Carme, Paniagua González, Gema, Garcinuño Martínez, Rosa María, Soliz Rojas, Dulce Lucy, Fernández Hernando, Pilar y Deudero, Salud .
