The increase of allergy cases and the severity of the reactions motivates the prediction of atmospheric concentrations in order to minimize the exposure to risky pollen levels. Also, it is of large interest for clinical institutions in order to apply preventive measures and plan in advance the implications of an increase number of allergy patients. Phenological and meteorological parameters characterize the stages of vegetation development during the growing season. Thus, they can be potentially related to the biological definition of plant phenology. In this thesis, time series of airborne pollen concentrations and meteorological variables measured at the region of Madrid were used to predict risk pollen concentrations for patients. Detailed relationships were established between future airborne concentrations, meteorological data, and flowering states derived from the inner information of the underlying data via computational intelligence models. Therefore, these data were used to develop predictive models for a range of forecast horizons. The proposal will be beneficial to the medical fields related with allergies affections planning and treatment, demonstrating that computational intelligence holds a great potential for aerobiology. In this research, we demonstrated several novel approaches that significantly contribute to the field of aerobiology including: (i) developing a computational intelligencebased model to predict risk concentration levels, and consequently the start and end of pollen season, for long term horizons up to 6 months, on which none of previous works succeed to obtain satisfactory results, (ii) identifying and characterizing the most influential factors which induce the presence of high airborne concentrations for a given set of horizons, using an assumption-free approach which supports biometeorological findings from other authors. The findings of the research are related to producing more accurate prediction models and providing a comprehensive analysis of the relationship of airborne concentrations with various meteorological parameters. As a product of this study, a version of Chapter 3 of this thesis was accepted and presented at the International Work Conference on Time Series Analysis (2016)1, and it has been selected to be extended and submitted as a book chapter in the Springer series Contributions to Statistics2. A version of Chapter 5 has been published as a full paper in the International Journal of Biometeorology3 and Chapter 4 is in preparation to be sent to an international journal for publication.0Doctoral Thesis3182Navares Echegaray, Ricardo. European Union has established thresholds for certain gases, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2). If these thresholds are exceeded, institutions of each city belonging to the EU, must activate measures previously defined, to go down NO2 concentrations. Meteorological parameters are related to episodes of high/low NO2 concentrations. In this paper, pollution time series and meteorological features measured in the Madrid region were used to predict NO2 concentrations. Detailed relationships between NO2 concentrations and meteorological data were established through computational intelligence models. Therefore, these data were used to develop a predictive model. The proposal shows good precision in the prediction, proving computational intelligence has great potential in the pollution time series forecasting. When constructing a prediction model, in addition obtaining good accuracy, it is important to know why that prediction is made. Interpreting the output of the computational intelligence model is difficult due to the architecture of the model itself. A SHAP (SHapley Additive Explanations) approach is applied to interpret the complex model outputs. This method assigns each feature a value of importance for a particular prediction. Three SHAP-based explanation methods are compared to determine which method is more suitable for the pollution time series data and for the computational intelligence model chosen. In this research therefore, a model based on computational intelligence is developed to predict the levels of NO2 concentrations. Through methods based on explanations we will obtain a deeper vision of how the computational intelligence model behaves on the pollution time series, allowing an increase in the confidence of the users on the results obtained from the prediction model. As a product of this study, a short version of this document has been sent for consideration in the Ecological Informatics1 international journal on computational ecology and ecological data science.0Doctoral Thesis5312Vega García, María. Integration of solar energy to the steam turbine of a combined cycle gives some advantages: the first one is the fuel saving due to the solar contribution and, additionally, the second one is that this contribution takes place especially in highly insolated periods with high ambient temperatures, when conventional combined cycles decrease their power rate and work with decreased efficiency. Previous works showed the convenience of ISCC using PTC and direct steam generation in locations with severe climatology. Besides, LFR technology is currently considered as a good option for reducing the cost of concentrating solar power. Thus, in the present work both concentrating technologies are studied and compared. Solar contribution is only used for evaporating water, increasing the production of the high pressure level of the steam generator. Two locations, Almeria and Las Vegas, are selected for the annual analyses. Results show that the proposed evaporative configurations increase the annual performance. Also, the thermal contribution is higher with PTC, but LFR may improve the economic feasibility of the plant.0472Rovira, Antonio, Barbero, Rubén, Montes, María José, Abbas, Rubén y Varela, Fernando . In addition, the use of an in-capillary sample concentration electrophoretic technique by sweeping was investigated to enhance the concentration sensitivity in MEKC. The highly selective, fast and effective sample pretreatment by MISPE along with the preconcentration by sweeping could overcome the low sensitivity of the highly efficient capillary electrophoresis separation with UV detection. The optimization of the variables affecting the separation as well as MISPE conditions procedure was carried out to select the best conditions of selectivity and sensitivity to determine digoxin at low concentration levels in urine. To demonstrate the suitability of the developed method several analytical characteristics (selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and LOD) were evaluated. Satisfactory results were obtained in terms of linearity (r > 0.99), recovery (95.4–96.5% with RSD from 1.3% to 2.6%), precision (RSD from 0.3% to 1.7% for migration times and from 2.1% to 7.3% for corrected peak areas), and sensitivity (LODs of 6 μg/L with 5 mL of sample or 1.2 μg/L with 25 mL). The proposed MISPE-MEKC method was satisfactorily applied to the analysis of spiked human urine samples achieving a concentration factor up to 7500-fold.0212Guijarro-Díez, Miguel, Paniagua González, Gema, Fernández Hernando, Pilar, Crego, Antonio Luis y Marina, María Luisa . In previous work, a number of non-covalent imprinted polymers were synthesised by “bulk” polymerisation. The digoxin binding and elution characteristics of these MIPs were then evaluated to obtain a highly selective material for integration into a sensor. The optimum MIP was synthesised by photo-initiated polymerisation of a mixture containing digoxin, MAA, EDGMA and AIBN in acetonitrile. The bulk polymer was ground and sieved and the template removed by Soxhlet extraction in MeOH/ACN. The MIP was packed into a flow cell and placed in a spectrofluorimeter to integrate the reaction and detection systems. The physical and chemical variables involved in digoxin determination by the sensor (nature and concentration of solution, flow rates, etc.) were optimised. Binding with the non-imprinted polymer (NIP) was also analysed. The new fluorosensor showed high selectivity and sensitivity, a detection limit of 1.7 × 10−2 μg l−1, and high reproducibility (R.S.D. of 1.03% and 1.77% for concentrations of 1.0 × 10−3 and 4.0 × 10−3 mg l−1, respectively). Selectivity was tested by determining the cross-reactivity of several compounds with structures analogous to digoxin. Under the assay conditions used, in which the potential interfering compounds were in concentrations 100 times higher than that of the analyte, no interference was recorded. The proposed fluorosensor was successfully used to determine digoxin concentration of human serum samples.0252Paniagua González, Gema, Fernández Hernando, Pilar y <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Durand Alegría, J. Digoxin-specific bulk polymer was obtained by the UV initiated co-polymerisation of methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in acetonitrile as porogen. After extracting the template analyte, the ground polymer particles were mixed with plasticizer polyvinyl chloride to form a MIP membrane. A reference polymer membrane was prepared from the same mixture of monomers but with no template. The resultant membrane morphologies were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The imprinted membrane was tested as the recognition element in a digoxin-sensitive fluorescence sensor; sensor response was measured using standard solutions of digoxin at concentrations of up to 4 × 10−3 mg L−1. The detection limit was 3.17 × 10−5 mg L−1. Within- and between-day relative standard deviations RSD (n = 5) were in the range 4.5–5.5% and 5.5–6.5% respectively for 0 and 1 × 10−3 mg L−1 digoxin concentrations. A selectivity study showed that compounds of similar structure to digoxin did not significantly interfere with detection for interferent concentrations at 10, 30 and 100 times higher than the digoxin concentration. This simply manufactured MIP membrane showed good recognition characteristics, a high affinity for digoxin, and provided satisfactory results in analyses of this analyte in human serum.0192Paniagua González, Gema, Fernández Hernando, Pilar y <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Durand Alegría, J. The ternary MgCl2/KCl/NaCl salt appears as one of the most promising due to its lower melting point, higher heat capacity, lower cost and stability up to 800 °C. A cavity-type receiver has been selected because minimizes radiation heat loss at high working temperatures, compared to an external-type receiver, since all commercial selective coatings degrade in air. Supercritical Brayton power cycle is chosen for the power block because it can surpass 50% efficiency, even when working in dry cooling conditions, and printed circuit heat exchangers are usually recommended due to its ability to support the high pressures. However, plugging/clogging issues arise in their small channels when using molten salts. This paper proposes a novel supercritical CO2 Bayton power cycle whose heat power is supplied through the low pressure side (over 85 bar) allowing the use of shell and tube heat exchangers, achieving a higher compactness and a lower investment. Thus, different options based on the recompression layout with intercooling and reheating have been investigated in both dry and wet cooling scenarios. Reheating is recommended for wet cooling, reaching 54.6% efficiency and an investment of 8662 $/kWe; intercooling with reheating is the best option for dry cooling, reaching 52.6% efficiency and an investment of 8742 $/kWe.02402Linares, José Ignacio, Montes, María José, Cantizano, Alexis y Sánchez, Consuelo . Furthermore; this high efficiency can be achieved at a moderate temperature level; thus suiting concentrating solar power (CSP) applications, which are seen as a core business within supercritical technologies. In this context, numerous studies have been published, creating the need for a thorough analysis to identify research areas of interest and the main researchers in the field. In this work, a bibliometric analysis of supercritical CO2 for CSP applications was undertaken considering all indexed publications within theWeb of Science between 1990 and 2020. The main researchers and areas of interest were identified through network mapping and text mining techniques, thus providing the reader with an unbiased overview of sCO2 research activities. The results of the review were compared with the most recent research projects and programs on sCO2 for CSP applications. It was found that popular research areas in this topic are related to optimization and thermodynamics analysis, which reflects the significance of power cycle configuration and working conditions. Growing interest in medium temperature applications and the design of sCO2 heat exchangers was also identified through density visualization maps and confirmed by a review of research projects.02582Reyes-Belmonte, Miguel Ángel, Guédez, Rafael y Montes, María José . The measurement of serum digoxin concentration is necessary owing to the narrow therapeutic range of this drug. Further, even with similar dosage regimens, the biological response of patients often results in very different concentrations of digoxin in serum. Concentrations of greater than 2.6 mmol/L are generally interpreted as toxic in adult patients. Most methods for digoxin determination are based on gas chromatography or radiochemical and enzymatic immunoassay techniques. However, some of these methods are tedious and difficult to automate. Nowadays, they are being replaced by more practical immunoassay techniques, involving, for example, fluorescent immunosensors that allow rapid, automated and selective digoxin determinations. This paper reports a new flow–through fluoroimmunosensor for digoxin determination, the function of which is based on antibodies immobilized on an inmunoreactor of controlled pore glass (CPG). The immunosensor has a detection limit of 1.20 μg/L and provides high reproducibility (RSD = 4.5% for a concentration of 0.0025 mg/L, and RSD = 6.7% for 0.01 mg/L). The optimum working concentration range was found to be 1.2×10-3 - 4.0×10-2 mg/L. The lifetime of the immunosensor was about 50 immunoassays, if stored unused its lifetime can be extended to three months. A sample speed of about 10–12 samples per hour can be attained. Possible interference from substances with structures similar to digoxin (morphine, heroine, tebaine, codeine, pentazocine and narcotine) was investigated. No cross-reactivity was seen at the highest digoxin:interferent ratio studied (1:100). The proposed fluoroimmunosensor was successfully used to determine digoxin concentrations in human serum samples.0292Fernández Hernando, Pilar, Durand Alegría, J.S., Pérez-Conde, C. y Paniagua González, Gema . However, the extent to which these symptoms may be reflected on acoustical features of the voice is still debated. This study investigates variations in fundamental frequency (fo) and related parameters in connected speech across phases of the menstrual cycle and during the use of a combined oral contraceptive pill (OCP). Method Electrolaryngographic recordings were made, and blood samples were collected at three different phases of the menstrual cycle—menstrual, follicular, and luteal—for placebo and OCP use. These two conditions were blindly and randomly allocated in the study. Speaking fo (SFF), SFF standard deviation, SFF rate of change, SFF slope, maximum and minimum fo, and fo range were extracted for nine healthy females while reading a phrase from the Rainbow Passage. Concentrations of sex hormones were analyzed in serum. Nonparametric statistical tests were carried out to assess differences between phases and conditions. Results SFF, its standard deviation, and maximum fo were significantly different between phases of the menstrual cycle for placebo use only. Menstrual phase showed the lowest values. Maximum and minimum fo were significantly different between placebo and OCP use for menstrual and follicular phases, respectively. Conclusions Fluctuations in sex steroid hormones across the menstrual cycle alter fo in speech more than a particular hormonal concentration. OCP use seems to have a stabilizing effect on the voice relative to fo and related parameters in speech.0692Filipa M.B., Lã y Polo, Nuria . Despite evidence for this connection existing since the 3rd century B.C., there are still controversies and lack of information about this area, especially regarding the effects on the female western classical singing voice. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the importance of undertaking further research in this field. Therefore, a revision of previous research, exploring the extent to which sexual hormonal concentrations can contribute to the well-being of a singer’s voice and career, from both psychological and biological points of view, will be presented. Additionally, further investigation in the field of hormonal related medication and its effects on singing voice quality will be undertaken.0482Filipa M.B., Lã y Davidson, W. . Each solar technology (i.e. PTC, LFR and CT) is proposed to integrate solar energy into the combined cycle in two different ways. The first one is based on the use of solar energy to evaporate water of the steam cycle by means of direct steam generation (DSG), increasing the steam production of the high pressure level of the steam generator. The other one is based on the use of solar energy to preheat the pressurized air at the exit of the gas turbine compressor before it is introduced in the combustion chamber, reducing the fuel consumption. Results show that ISCC with DSG increases the yearly production while solar air heating reduces it due to the incremental pressure drop. However, air heating allows significantly higher solar-to-electricity efficiencies and lower heat rates. Regarding the solar technologies, PTC provides the best thermal results.0372Rovira, Antonio, Sánchez, Consuelo, Valdés, Manuel, Abbas, Ruben, Barbero, Rubén, Montes, María José, Muñoz, Marta, Muñoz-Antón, Javier, Ortega, Guillermo y Varela, Fernando . Plastic degradation produces nano-sized plastic particles (NPs) that end up in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including oceans, rivers, and lakes. Their presence in air, drinking water, sediments, food, and personal care products leads to a variety of exposure routes for living beings, including humans. The toxicity mechanisms of these nanomaterials (NMs) in living organisms and ecosystems are currently unknown, making it a priority to understand their effects at the molecular and cellular levels. The zebrafish (Zf) (Danio rerio) is a model organism which has a high homology with humans and has been widely used to assess the hazard of different xenobiotics. In this study, the expression changes of different genes in 120 hpf Zf embryos (Zfe) after exposure to polystyrene (PS) NPs (30 nm) at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 3 ppm were investigated. The results showed that the gene encoding heat shock protein (hsp70) was down-regulated in a dose-dependent manner. The genes encoding superoxide dismutase (SOD 1 and SOD 2), apoptotic genes (cas 1 and cas 8) and interleukin 1-β (il1β) were activated at the concentration of 3 ppm PS NP, while the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl2α was inhibited at 0.5 and 3 ppm. In addition, the neurotransmitter-related gene Acetyl-Cholinesterase (ache) was significantly inhibited and the DNA repair genes (gadd45α and rad51) were also down-regulated. In contrast, the mitochondrial metabolism-related gene cox1 did not alter its expression in any of the treatments. Most of the changes in gene expression occurred at the highest concentration of NPs. Overall, the results indicated that NPs generated cellular stress that caused certain alterations in normal gene expression (oxidative stress, apoptotic and inflammatory processes, neurotoxicity and anti-apoptotic proteins), but did not cause any mortality after 120 hpf exposure at the three concentrations assayed. These results highlight the need for further studies investigating the effects, at the molecular level, of these materials in humans and other living organisms.0342Martín, Folgar, Raquel, Torres Ruiz, Mónica, Alba, Mercedes de, Cañas Portilla, Ana Isabel, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de González, M. Flow techniques are usually faster, more robust and more flexible than their batch equivalents. In addition, flow methods use less sample and reagent amounts and reduce analytical costs and waste. A flow injection solid-phase extraction pre-concentration system using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) packed micro-column was developed for the determination of 1-hydroxypyrene in human urine with fluorescence detection. The pre-concentration of 1-hydroxypyrene on the MIP was carried out based on the specific retention of analyte by on-line introducing the sample into the micro-column system. Methanol and dichloromethane mixture was used to elute the retained analyte for fluorometric analysis. Important influencing factors were studied in detail, in batch and in flow (MISPE procedure optimisation, sample and eluent volumes, flow rate, dimensions of MIP micro-column and amounts of packing material, etc). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first on-line flow injection molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction for the pre-concentration and determination of hydroxylate PAH metabolite in urine samples. The optimised method was successfully applied to the determination of 1-Hydroxypyrene in spiked urine samples, with recoveries in the range of 74–85% and RSD<4.6%. Under optimum experimental conditions, the linearity concentration range used was 10–400 μg L−1, R2>0.996. We obtained limit of detection and quantification of 3.1 μg L−1 and 10.5 μg L−1, respectively0562Serrano, Montserrat, Bartolomé, Mónica, Bravo, Juan Carlos, Paniagua, Gema, Gañan, Judith, Gallego-Picóa, Alejandrina y Garcinuño, Rosa María . The Dulce River is used for irrigation through a vast network of channels and ditches, including the San Martin Canal (SMC), which crosses the capital city of Santiago del Estero. This canal's water is used for drinking, as well as recreational use for the general population. However, this river has been seriously polluted for several decades. The present study focuses on the identification and the quantification of the water pollution levels of total phenols in the SMC according to the seasonal periods. Water samples from various areas of the canal in different months of the year, extending from December to September, were collected for analysis. Additionally, the concentration of total dissolved solids (TDS), chlorides, sulphates, nitrites and organic matter, as well as water hardness and alkalinity, were analysed in order to conduct a more complete study of the contamination of this area. The results showed a worrying total phenol concentration that exceeded the limit set by Argentine legislation for drinking water, as well as water for recreational use (5 μg/L). The total phenol (TP) concentration was directly determined by a molecular absorption spectroscopy method based on a new flow injection analysis system (FIA). Under the selected experimental conditions, the detection and quantification limits were 0.0490 and 0.1633 μg/mL, respectively. The developed method provides a number of improvements related to the speed of analysis, the restricted consumption of the reagents and sample volumes and the unnecessary sample treatment that contribute to environmentally friendly analytical chemistry. The results showed that TP make a significant contribution in the SMC pollution, especially during the months of April (400 ± 110 μg/L) and September (240 ± 20 μg/L). A high sulphate concentration that was higher than the limit allowed by the legislation was also found.0602Acosta, Carina Andrea, López, Clara, Paniagua González, Gema, Garcinuño, Rosa Mª y Fernández, Pilar . To test this hypothesis, we conducted a perceptual experiment where 78 heterosexual males rated sexual attractiveness of 9 female voice samples, recorded at menstrual, follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle under two double-blinded randomly allocated conditions: a natural menstrual cycle (placebo condition) and when using an oral contraceptive pill (OCP condition). The voice samples yielded a total of 54 stimuli that were visually sorted and rated using Visor software. Concentrations of estrogens, progesterone and testosterone were analyzed, and measurements of speaking fundamental frequency (sfo) and its standard deviation (sfoSD), fo derivative (dfo) and fo slope were made. A multilevel ordinal logistic regression model nested in listeners and in females, and adjusted by phase and condition, was carried out to assess the association between ratings and: (1) phases and conditions; (2) sex steroid hormonal concentrations; and (3) voice parameters. A high probability of obtaining high ratings of voice sexual attractiveness was found for: (1) menstrual phase of placebo use and follicular phase of OCP use; (2) for low estradiol to progesterone ratio and testosterone concentrations; and (3) for low dfo. The latter showed a moderate statistical association with ratings of high attractiveness, as compared with the small association found for the remaining variables. It seems that the voice is a weak cue for female CL. Female sexual attraction to males may be a consequence of what females do in order to regulate their extended sexuality across the menstrual cycle rather than of estrus cues, the use of paralinguistic speech patterns being an example.0662Filipa M.B., Lã, Polo, Nuria, Granqvist, Svante, Cova, Tania y Pais, Alberto C. . of Barbanza.
Traditionally the research on Galician rock art had focused in the área
around Campolameiro (Pontevedra) where the biggest number of sites was
reported, whereas other zones to the North were almost unknown in that
respect. In this paper we deal with the new finds of petroglyphs in the
Barbanza, where intensive survey has multiplied the number of this tipe of
sites. The usual motifs are abstract (mainly concentric circles and cupmarks)
but also semischematic with representations of deer. The distribution
of the art is more dense in the coastal lowlands, though a number of
sites is reported in the passes leading into the high sierra and in this área
itself. As to the relationship with the roughiy contemporary settiements (lllrd
millenium BC), we have observed a definite pattern: cupmarks are sharing
the same space with the more densely Inhabited áreas down to the coast
and also they are found near to the mounds in the high plateau; animal
representations and more complex abstract motifs (concentric circles with
or without radius) are sited along small valleys or ridges that link the lowlands
and the upper reaches of the Sierra. All this patterning would point
out to the role of petrogliphs as a mechanism for defining the most resourceful
or symbolic places and the paths leading into them.07422Gil Agra, Lola and Concheiro Coello, Ángel . Biogas has emerged to avoid the intensification of global warming and promote waste valorization. However, undesirable chemicals must be removed prior to its utilization. Siloxanes stand out as biogas contaminants since they can damage process equipment’s. Therefore, in this work, COSMO-based/Aspen Plus computational methodology was applied to evaluate, as first-time, ionic liquids (ILs) as siloxanes absorbents on biogas upgrading context. Thus, molecular simulation using COSMO-RS method was used to analyze the interactions between siloxanes/ILs based on excess properties. Moreover, it was used to select the most promising ILs among a wide sample (9 0 0) of solvents for latter process simulation stage based on thermodynamics (Henry’s law constants) and kinetics (low viscosity). The results revealed that ILs with fluorinated anions are the best for the task. Then, the performance of selected ILs on siloxane capture at industrial scale was evaluated by means of Aspen Plus process simulations. Thus, the absorption efficiency in a packed column was analyzed by comparing the silicon concentration in outlet gas stream for each IL, using a rigorous RADFRAC column in Rate-base mode. Operating pressure inside the column was also studied as key operating variable. Last, simulations of the complete siloxane capture processes were carried out to treat a realistic biogas stream, including the analysis of both absorption and regeneration columns. Process simulation results revealed that thermodynamics is the key property for the selection of ILs for siloxanes capture. Moreover, most of the selected ILs can satisfy silicon outlet concentration legislation (< 5 mgSi/Nm3 ) in almost all the studied operating conditions. Last, solvent regeneration using air stripping column demonstrated the reversibility of the process in mild conditions of temperature (100 °C) and vacuum pressure (0.1 bar). In sum, ILs are proposed as promising siloxanes absorbents of siloxanes-containing streams, mainly focused on biogas upgrading.0462Santiago, Rubén, Moya, Cristian y Palomar, José . Human exposure to arsenic via rice consumption is of great concern in countries where this crop is the dominant staple food, and limited information is available on the arsenic contamination on rice in Ecuador. This work was to contribute to the lack of knowledge analysing total arsenic by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectrometry in the samples of white, brown and parboiled rice purchased in Ecuadorian markets and produced in the two main rice wetlands in Ecuador, Guayas and Los Ríos, were carried out. For the samples from Guayas, arsenic concentration in white, brown and parboiled rice were 0.174 ± 0.014, 0.232 ± 0.021, and 0.186 ± 0.017 mg/kg respectively, whereas samples of white rice from Los Ríos showed a total arsenic level of 0.258 ± 0.037 mg/kg. This last arsenic concentration exceeds recommended maximum permissible limit by the FAO/WHO. The variables affecting the sensitivity and dynamic range of the sensors (e.g., the carrier and elution solutions, flow-rates, pH and reagent concentrations) were optimised and the binding characteristics of their reactive phases compared in a competitive fluorescent assay. Digoxin was reproducibly determined by both sensors at the mg L-1 level (detection limit= 1.20×10-3 mg L-1 and RSD= 4-7% for the immunosensor; detection limit= 1.7×10-5 mg L-1 and RSD= 1-2% for the MIP sensor). No cross reactivity with digoxinrelated compounds was seen for either sensor at a digoxin:interferent ratio of 1:100. The lifetime of the immunosensor was about 50 immunoassays; its shelf life, when unused, is about three months. The lifetime of the MIP sensor was over 18 months. Both sensors were used to determine the digoxin concentration of human serum samples with satisfactory results.0262Paniagua González, Gema, Fernández Hernando, Pilar y <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Durand Alegría, J. Prior to analysing the quality of the audit, we have adjusted the best possible model to the audit fees behaviour in order to extract the abnormal fees. Our dynamic model shows that audited company’s size, the previous year’s audit fees, the years with the same audit firm, the auditor’s opinion, the auditor rotation, the concentration or dedication to the client and the client sector are explanatory factors of audit fees. Further, we find evidence that audit quality improves with number of hours billed for audit work and decreases with sector concentration of auditor and, a novel multiplicative effect, the auditor size by abnormal audit fees, in such a way that the surcharge (abnormal fees) of the big audit firms contribute negatively to improve the audit quality.0222Guzmán-Raja, Isidoro, González-Sánchez, Mariano, Rúa-Alonso-De- Corralesc, Enrique y Sánchez-García, Juan Francisco . This phenomenon is studied in the context of ultrathin liquid films resting atop curved convex substrates in contact with a fluid reservoir. Experiments are conducted with low-molecular-weight polydimethylsiloxane (silicone oil) mixtures composed of a volatile solvent and trace amounts of a nonvolatile solute. A theoretical model based on the thin-film approximation is developed, incorporating the effects of evaporative mass loss, gravity, capillarity, van der Waals forces, species diffusion, and Marangoni stresses. The spatiotemporal evolution of this system is studied by modulating the rate of evaporation of the volatile species and the bulk solute volume fraction in the mixture. The experiments and accompanying numerical simulations reveal that both Marangoni stresses and stabilizing van der Waals interactions between the substrate and the free surface can induce flow reversal and film regeneration. Their relative contribution is modulated by the solutocapillary Marangoni number, which is proportional to the bulk concentration of nonvolatile species in the mixture. Furthermore, it is revealed that increasing the rate of evaporation enhances the volumetric flow rate from thicker, solvent-rich areas towards thinner, solute-rich regions of the film. Although quantitative differences between the theory and the experiments are observed within certain ranges of the controlled parameters, the model qualitatively reproduces the flow regimes observed in the experiments and elucidates the complex interplay among the various physical forces.0282Rodríguez-Hakim, Mariana, Barakat, Joseph M., Shi, Xingyi, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Shaqfeh, Eric S. Humanizing High Socioeconomic Status Groups Undermines Attitudes Toward Redistributionbibliuned:DptoPSyO-FPSI-Articulos-Msainz-0009The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few at the expense of general impoverishment is a major problem in some modern societies. However, there is a general opposition to redistribution policies or to the application of a progressive taxation system. The goal of this research was to explore one factor that might drive the attitudes toward income redistribution: The (de)humanization of high socioeconomic status groups. Previous studies have shown that high socioeconomic status groups tend to be considered as unemotional machines without any concern for others. However, the consequences of mechanizing (vs. humanizing) high socioeconomic status on the interpretation of socioeconomic differences has not been explored yet. We considered that humanizing high socioeconomic status groups might have an unexpected negative effect on attitudes about income inequality and wealth concentration. Specifically, this research aims to determine how humanizing high socioeconomic status groups influences people’s perceptions of the group’s wealth and preferences for income redistribution. We conducted two studies in which we manipulated the humanity (mechanized vs. humanized in terms of their Human Nature traits) of a high socioeconomic status group. Results of these two studies showed that humanizing (vs. mechanizing) high socioeconomic status groups led to lower support for income redistribution/taxation of wealthy groups, through considering that the group’s wealth comes from internal sources (e.g., ambition) rather than external ones (e.g., corruption). These results were independent of the group’s likeability and perceived competence/warmth. The present research provides valuable insight about the possible dark side of humanizing high socioeconomic status groups as a process that could contribute to the maintenance of the status quo and the legitimation of income inequality in our societies.0292Sainz, Mario, Martínez, Rocío, Rodríguez-Bailón, Rosa y Moya, Miguel . The detailed level of description is governed by a Brownian dynamics of non-interacting particles. The coarse-level is described by discrete concentration variables defined in terms of the Delaunay cell. These coarse variables obey a stochastic differential equation that can be understood as a discrete version of a diffusion equation. The diffusion equation contains two basic building blocks which are the entropy function and the friction matrix. The entropy function is shown to be non-additive due to the overlapping of cells in the Delaunay construction. The friction matrix is state dependent in principle, but for near-equilibrium situations it is shown that it may safely evaluated at the equilibrium value of the density field0Doctoral Thesis7902Torre Rodríguez, Jaime Arturo de la. Groundwater mineralization is driven by many processes such as, weathering of volcanic products, geothermal activity and human activities. The original matrix consisted of 9 parameters estimated (fluoride content, pH, conductivity, environmental and water temperatures, total dissolved solids, chloride concentration, hardness and alkalinity) from 110 groundwater samples collected of 23 selected scattered rural areas. Groundwater samples were obtained by sampling in wells at different depths. The fluoride levels were determined by a standard colorimetric method in two seasonal periods, dry (from April to September) and rainy (from October to March). Parameters such as pH and total dissolved solids (TDS) reached their highest values in the rainy season; while the temperature, alkalinity, chloride concentration and hardness did it in the dry season. In both seasons, the environmental temperature average was 22 °C. Regarding the fluoride content, approximately the fifty percent of the analyzed groundwater samples exceeded the upper limit (1.0 mg/L) established by the current legislation, obtaining concentration levels between 0.01-2.80 mg/L. This study demonstrates the usefulness of univariate (quartiles calculation, interquartile range IQR) and multivariate statistical method of principal component analysis (PCA) and clusters to establish a better understanding of the environmental status of the region studied and the degree of pollution.0592Paniagua González, Gema, Rondano Gómez, K., López Pasquali, C.E., Fernández-Hernando, P. y Garcinuño Martínez, Rosa María . The Data EPC Acquisition System (DEPCAS) is an original proposal designed by our group to transfer and apply fundamental ideas from System and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems into the areas of RFID acquisition, processing and distribution systems. In this paper we focus on how to organize and manage generic RFID sensors (edge readers, readers, PLCs, etc…) inside the DEPCAS middleware. We denote by RFID Sensors Networks Management (RSNM) this part of DEPCAS, which is built on top of two new concepts introduced and developed in this work: MARC (Minimum Access Reader Command) and RRTL (RFID Reader Topology Language). MARC is an abstraction layer used to hide heterogeneous devices inside a homogeneous acquisition network. RRTL is a language to define RFID Reader networks and to describe the relationship between them (concentrator, peer to peer, master/submaster).06102Abad, Ismael, Cerrada, Carlos, Cerrada, Jose A., Heradio Gil, Rubén y Valero, Enrique . Particularly why some periods have been neglected: II Republic, Civil War and Franco Dictatorship. Amnesia has also been present in art when dealing with the recent transition to democracy after the death of Franco. Different art practices are perused in this text starting from the 80's and up to now. These art works have dealt with different issues: the oblivion republicans suffered, the role played by women in wartime and in the exile. Also the meaning of forgetfullness on the concentration camps in different regions of Spain is taken into consideration.06422Vicente Aliaga, Juan . One the most relevant of these perturbations is weather. In fact, different weather conditions imply different inflow rates and substance (e.g., N-ammonia, which is among the most important) concentrations. Therefore, weather has traditionally been an important signal that operators take into account to tune WWTP control systems. This signal cannot be directly measured with traditional physical sensors. Nevertheless, machine learning-based soft-sensors can be used to predict non-observable measures by means of available data. In this paper, we present novel research about a new soft-sensor that predicts the current weather signal. This weather prediction differs from traditional weather forecasting since this soft-sensor predicts the weather conditions as an operator does when controling the WWTP. This prediction uses a model based on past WWTP influent states measured by only a few physical and widely applied sensors. The results are encouraging, as we obtained a good accuracy level for a relevant and very useful signal when applied to advanced WWTP control systems.0242Hernández-del-Olmo, Félix, Gaudioso, Elena, Duro, Natividad y Dormido, Raquel . However, their performance is far from optimal due to the high non-linearity of the biological and changing processes involved. Therefore, more advanced control techniques are proposed in the literature (e.g., using artificial intelligence techniques). However, these new control techniques have not been compared to the traditional approaches that are actually being used in real plants. To this end, in this paper, we present a comparison of the PID control configurations currently applied to control the dissolved oxygen concentration (in the active sludge process) against a reinforcement learning agent. Our results show that it is possible to have a very competitive operating cost budget when these innovative techniques are applied.0282Hernández-del-Olmo, Félix, Gaudioso, Elena, Duro, Natividad, Dormido, Raquel y Gorrotxategi, Mikel . To investigate the extent to which these symptoms affect singers, a systematic literature review was carried out using eight interdisciplinary bibliographic databases. Combinations of the following key words were used: menopause, climacterium, singing, singers, and choir. From 18 studies, including three doctoral dissertations and a master’s thesis, only 10 met the inclusion criteria. The heterogeneity of study designs and methods of data collection and analysis precluded the carrying out of a meta-analysis. Instead, descriptors of symptoms affecting the voice, and vocal characteristics associated with menopause (menopause descriptors) were categorized, and their frequency of occurrence determined, according to six types of primary dataset: (1) self-reported symptoms, (2) acoustic characteristics, (3) observations of the larynx, (4) perceptual evaluations, (5) analysis of electrolaryngographic waveform characteristics, and (6) analysis of hormone concentrations. The descriptors that occurred most frequently in the literature concerned aspects of voice production, whereas those concerning vocal health, and vocal practice and performance, were less common. Of the three subsystems that comprise the vocal instrument, the vibrating vocal folds seem to be more affected than breathing and resonance. Changes in vocal range, timbre, endurance, and vocal fold mobility occur during menopause, affecting singers’ voice quality. Some singers reported that their ability to perform was compromised, mainly due to memory lapses and lack of confidence. Maintaining regular singing and practicing semi-occluded vocal tract exercises throughout the menopausal transition seem to help singers to overcome the negative impacts of menopause on vocal performance.0382Fiuza, Mauro B., Sevillano, María Luisa y Filipa M.B., Lã . For that, excitation-emission matrices (EEMs), containing full fluorescence information, were collected with a fibre-optic, assembled to a spectrofluorometer. Data analysis was performed with several second-order multi-way algorithms, such as parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), multi-way partial least-squares (N-PLS), unfolded partial least-squares (U-PLS), and multivariate curve resolution-alternating least-squares (MCR-ALS). Firstly, the EEMs of each plum, collected each week along the maturation process, were processed with PARAFAC. Two components were used to model the data and the excitation and emission loadings were obtained. Score values for the first PARAFAC component showed a clear evolution with time, increasing during the first five weeks, and decreasing for the last weeks. Also, the chlorophyll concentrations obtained by HPLC analysis, in the skin and the whole fruit, were compared with those obtained with different algorithms mentioned before. Best results were obtained in the case of skin for all algorithms. Similar correlation coefficients (r) were obtained in all cases (0.899 (PARAFAC); 0.940 (U-PLS); 0.936 (N-PLS) and 0.958 (MCR-ALS)). When the elliptical joint confidence region (EJCR), for the slope and intercept, were calculated, the theoretically expected values of 1 and 0, for the slope and intercept, respectively, were included in all ellipses. However, it was observed that for the skin data and U-PLS and N-PLS algorithms, the EJCR confidence region was smaller than in the other cases.0352Monago Maraña,Olga, Domínguez Manzano, Jaime, Muñoz de la Peña, Arsenio, Durán Merás, Isabel y Muñoz de la Peña, Arsenio . elaborar un amplio fichero informático referente a las surgencias de
In base to the consultation of an ampie published datasets it has been
able to process a referring file to the springs of thermal and/or mineral
waters (A.M.M.T.) of the Iberian Península.
By means of the use of computer systems it has realized geologicgeographic
maps that show us the distribution of these spring waters in
function of some chemical caracters and of its temperature.
The distribution from the 1592 points A.M.M.T. in the Iberian Península
is not homogenous; it's possible to consíder that the concentration in
áreas or regions is one of their characteristics. Some of these accumulations
(for example in the volcanic región quaternary of Fields of Calatrava)
it gives in function of the chemical character that it considers.
The thermal waters resemble to have preference for the regions of the
edge Mediterranean where a big part of springs with major temperatures
to 20 °C are found. In the Vasco Country it gives the concentration more
numerous of A.M.M.T., although there are scarce valúes of temperature
higher of 20 °C.
To the peninsular join it is observed a good coincidence between the
regional distribution from the A.M.M.T. and the existence of fractures or
faults of longitud of the order of 60 km. This scale is the one that seems
to act of control in the distribution of these springs. In the fractures or
faults of much magnitude are not present phenomenons of this type in all
its extensión, they remain located to punctual regions or regions with accumulations
of the now mentioned order.
Also in the regions of the mediterranean littoral is where it is observed
the major correlation in the overposition of points A.M.M.T. and sismic
activity.06372Martín Escorza, Carlos . Due to the important applications in many research areas, they have been studied for many years. Their phase diagrams present several condensed phases, showing untilted or tilted structures at low values of surface pressure. In this paper, we present a novel density functional study on tilted phases of different fatty acid Langmuir monolayers. By means of this study, a further understanding of the physical chemistry properties and the nature of the formation of tilted monolayers can be achieved. Our calculations reveal that, regardless of the number of carbon atoms which form the apolar chain, the transversal (or conventional in the case of untilted phases) unit cell shows similar dimensions, ca. 4.9 × 6.8 Å, which is in fair agreement with the range of the observed data. The energy variation of the unit cell as a function of the inclination of the molecules, reveals an abrupt increase in values larger than 45° and 36° for NN- and NNN-tilt, respectively, in fair agreement with the experimental observation of L2h (NN) and L2′ (NNN) phases of fatty acids. All of the fatty acids explored (from 10 to 19 carbon atoms) yield similar results. Finally, the energetics and structural changes of the monolayer along the variation of the area per molecule, obtained by enlarging in a-, b- or both axes of the untilted unit cell, have been explored. This study reveals that the untilted phases are energetically more stable at low values of area per molecule (high surface concentration), as it is expected. When the area per molecule values are increased, tilted phases (along NN or NNN-direction) with b/a ratio typical of herringbone (HB) or pseudo-herringbone (PHB) structures are found in the lowest energy configurations, which depend on how the distortion of the untilted unit cell is performed. For example, HB structures are the most stable when the molecules tilt along the enlarged axis of the untilted unit cell (a or b), meanwhile unit cell structures characteristic of PHB configurations occur in the opposite cases and at larger values of the area per molecule (low surface concentrations). All these predictions are in good agreement with the GIXD observations of the different phases of the phase diagram of fatty acid Langmuir monolayers.0402Toledano, Óscar, Rubio Álvarez, Miguel Ángel y Gálvez, Óscar . These terrains have been affected by endokarstic processes. The Benis Cave is the deepest explored cave in the region and it was related to an active fault. Evidence of recent paleoseismic activity and the peculiar topography of the cave, encouraged us to monitor the daily CO2 content in the air composition at depth (-280m), and for a time period of four months. Our results show a preliminary positive correlation between micro-seismic activity in the surroundings (up to 60 km away), and the CO2 concentration (daily increasing of 40ppm for the closest microearthquakes). Moreover, there is an empirical relationship between the daily increment value and the distance to the epicentre. Therefore, we propose an increase in the CO2 concentration into the air karst related to the microseismic activity. Despite this preliminary worthy results, more data are needed to establish an accurate model for earthquake forecasting.03232Pérez López, Raúl, Bañón, E., López Gutiérrez, J., Lario, Javier, Rodríguez Pascua, M.A., Martín Velázquez, S., Giner-Robles, J.L., Silva, Pablo G., Moral., B. del y Pueyo-Morer, E.L.
This work is located in ttie years
1904-1906 in the city of Seville
(Spain). It is studied how the town
council tried, in these years, to
diminish the large list ofpeople
registered in what wasis called
Padrón Municipal de Beneficiencia
(Charity Town Census in English)
because it was a great cost, medical
and pharmaceutical, forthe town
public funds, in that époque of
shortage and stagnation. The
Charity Town Census was defined,
at the beginning oflast century as
the census in which were registered
people susceptible of receive
sanitary assistance from the Town
Council. Given the conditions for the
registration, almost every wageworker
in Seville (and Spain), could
take part of the Charity Census. The
main reason for this situation was
obviously the paltry salary of the
workers. Furthermore, it is analysed
the city distribution ofpeople
belonging to the Census and their
concentration in particular áreas of
the city shaping a true urban
geography of poverty, with an
Till now, the majority of the research about the use of thermal and
medicinal waters during Antiquity, has been concentrated in the study of
the epigraphy, refered to the cult to these waters (almost always out of
context), and in the thermal centers during Román times. One of the main
difficulties is to establish the moment of the begining of its use. For that
reason, we propose, as a first step, the study of the sites which are cióse
to the spring water, mainly refered to the Iron Age. Here below, we present,
as an exemple, those which are located in Navarra and Rioja

aquellos oportunistas conspiraban a salvo

however, that epithet was used by the

that accusation leaned on, nevertheless,

In situ growth of CdS quantum dots on the outer fullerene layer imparts this layer with light-responsive properties in connection to inner Pt, Pd or MnO2 layers. This is the first time that visible light is used to drive bubble-propelled tubular micromotors. The micromotors exhibit a broad absorption range from 320 to 670 nm and can be wirelessly controlled by modulating light intensity and peroxide concentration. The built-in accelerating optical system allows for the control of the velocity over the entire UV/Vis light spectra by modulating the catalyst surface chemistry. The light-responsive properties have been also exploited to accelerate the chemical dealloying and propulsion of micromotors containing a Cu/Pd layer. Such dual operated hybrid micromotors hold considerable promise for designing smart micromachines for on-demand operations, motion- based sensing, and enhanced cargo transportation.0252María Hormigos, Roberto, Jurado Sánchez, Beatriz y Escarpa, Alberto . The new approach involves the IR spectra and carbon analysis of a Ti6Al4V strip treated with a surfactant and ester emulsion adjusted to pH 9.2 with 2-aminoethanol. The results are dependent on the ester and surfactant concentration. The analytical signals are the integral value of the CH2 and CO signals of the IR spectra and the carbon content. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the analysis made directly on the metal surface allows knowing the film forming ability of the emulsion. The method may be useful for research and development of more environmentally friendly water-based metalworking fluids for the metal industry.0182Benedicto, Elisabet, Carou, D., Rubio Alvir, Eva María y Batlle, L. . From 1662 to 1667 Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 3rd count of Castelo Melhor, ruled the Portuguese monarchy as favorite of the King Alfonse VI. At that time, the count implemented a set of governmental practices typical of the Spanish privados, as the control of the royal household and the personal handling of the decision making process of the crown. In this article we concentrate in the arguments used by the Count’s allies in order to justify his position as king’s favorite. With the opposition to the valido in the Restored Portugal, and structural changes of the European monarchies in the second half of the 17th, the supporters of the Count justified his intervention in the government associating him with the military victories of Portugal in the conflict against the Spanish Monarchy, as well as, through his office of scrivener of the secret seal.05302Dantas, Vinicius . The micromotors are easily prepared by direct deposition of chitosan into the pores of a membrane template and in situ PB synthesis during hydrogel deposition. Under judicious pH control, PB micromotors display enzyme mimetic capabilities with three key functions on board: the autonomous oxygen bubble propulsion (with PB acting as a catalase mimic for hydrogen peroxide decomposition), 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation (with PB acting as a peroxidase mimic for analyte detection), and as a magnetic material (to simplify the (bio)-sensing steps). In connection with chitosan capabilities, these unique enzyme mimetic micromotors are further functionalized with acetylthiocholinesterase enzyme (ATChE) to be explored in fast inhibition assays (20 min) for the colorimetric determination of the nerve agent neostigmine, with excellent analytical performance in terms of quantification limit (0.30 μM) and concentration linear range (up to 500 μM), without compromising efficient micromotor propulsion. The new concept illustrated holds considerable potential for a myriad of (bio)-sensing applications, including forensics, where this conceptual approach remains to be explored. Micromotor-based tests to be used in crime scenes are also envisioned due to the reliable neostigmine determination in unpretreated samples.0272María-Hormigos, Roberto, Molinero-Fernández, Águeda, López, Miguel Ángel, Jurado-Sánchez, Beatriz y Escarpa, Alberto . al tema de las aguas mineromedicinales en la región extremeña.
actuales. This work deals with the present situation of the research in the subject
of the mineral and medicinal waters in Extremadura.
The cataloguing task we have carried out for five years, has produced
a big increase in the number of known places, bur with different categories:
the Spring, the Baths Place and the Spa. Taking into account this
datábase, we have tried to establish the relationship among the place with
worship elements, established with documentary evidence through the
epigraphy, the toponymy and the building remains. We have observed,
moreover, there are some concentration áreas of places, which are tied
to geological reasons, communication routes and archaeological settlements.
Finally, we propose a viewpoint which shows the treatment of the subject
in the regional bibliography and the present outlines of research.06492Rodrigo, V. and Haba Quirós, Salvadora . barcelonés —el Consell de Cent— se
atribuciones y ejecutando decisiones:
políticas, judiciales, económicas,
militares..., convirtiéndose en el
bastión de la guerra contra Castilla,
que simbolizaba el absolutismo de
Felipe IV y de sus ministros, en
especial del conde de Olivares y del
protonotario Villanueva. Durante su
reinado, el Consell de Cent sufrió
constantes presiones económicas,
militares y agravios varios. The constitution of the municipal
