In the former case it is defined as the ratio between the closed phase and the period, as measured in flow glottograms (FLOGG), while in the latter case it is defined as the time interval between the falling and rising parts of the electroglottogram (EGG), measured at some percentage of the peak-to-peak amplitude. The study aims at analyzing differences between EGG and FLOGG based closed quotients and their relationships with voice source parameters. Study Design: Comparative study Methods: FLOGG based and EGG based measures collected from five professional male singers were compared, under different pitch and loudness conditions. Results: As compared with the FLOGG based quotient, the EGG based quotient (i) varied more between subjects, (ii) presented greater values, (iii) varied less with subglottal pressure, (iv) varied less with the normalized amplitude quotient (i.e. the ratio between the flow pulse amplitude and the product of period and maximum flow declination rate), and (v) varied less with the relative amplitude of the voice source fundamental. Conclusions: Although positively related, FLOGG based and EGG based closed quotients differ and must not be confused.0392Filipa M.B., Lã y Sundberg, Johan . The growing interest in the use of IoT technologies has led to the development of numerous diverse applications, many of which are based on the knowledge of the end user's location and profile. This paper investigates the characterization of Bluetooth signals behavior using 12 different supervised learning algorithms as a first step toward the development of fingerprint-based localization mechanisms. We then explore the use of metaheuristics to determine the best radio power transmission setting evaluated in terms of accuracy and mean error of the localization mechanism. We further tune-up the supervised algorithm hyperparameters. A comparative evaluation of the 12 supervised learning and two metaheuristics algorithms under two different system parameter settings provide valuable insights into the use and capabilities of the various algorithms on the development of indoor localization mechanisms.0412Lovón Melgarejo, Jesús, Castillo Cara, Manuel, Huarcaya Canal, Oscar, Orozco Barbos, Luis y García Varea, Ismael . A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Studybibliuned:425-Lfilipa-0022Voice complaints associated with menopause have been reported by a substantial number of studies. However, to assess the clinical relevance of menopause to voice is still difficult as the extent to which menopausal symptoms are reflected on voice metrics remains unclear. A comprehensive review and meta-analysis were carried out to identify voice-related metrics that change with menopause and to quantify the magnitude of those changes. Academic Search Premier, Medline, SciELO, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched without restriction of publication year until January 2020. Cross-sectional studies comparing voice-related metrics between pre- and post-menopausal women were included. Studies assessing effects of hormonal-replacement therapy were excluded. Datasets with more than one publication were also disregarded. Methodological quality of included studies was assessed applying the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cross-sectional studies. Given the heterogeneous nature of the primary studies, random-effects models were applied to pool the estimates. Eight articles were considered eligible for meta-analyses, assessing the effects of menopause on 6 voice metrics: mean fundamental frequency (fo), extracted from (1) speech and (2) from sustained vowel /a/; frequency perturbation measures (3) jitter, (4) shimmer and (5) noise-to-harmonics ratio; and (6) maximum phonation time. Both speech fundamental frequency and fo for sustained vowel /a/ were found to be 0.94 and 1.18 semitones lower in post- as compared to pre-menopausal women, respectively. Although significant, the magnitude of these decreases is below the just noticeable interval difference and well above the cutting point for distinguishing female from male voices. No significant differences were found for jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonics ratio, and maximum phonation time. The evaluation of acoustic metrics that reflect a single aspect of voice production at a time may conceal the effects of hormonal shifts during menopause. In addition, several variables interplay during voice production and acoustical measures may constitute weak predictors of vocal folds’ status, where changes associated to sex steroid hormones are most likely to occur.0562Filipa M.B., Lã y Ardura, Diego . Here we test the hypothesis that this can serve the purpose of musical expressivity. Data were drawn from earlier recordings, where a professional baritone sang excerpts as void of musical expression as he could (Neutral) and as expressive as in a concert (Concert). Fundamental frequency averaged over tones was examined and compared with ETT. Phrase-peak tones were sharper in excited examples, particularly in the Concert versions. These tones were flattened to ETT using the Melodyne software. The manipulated and original versions were presented pairwise to a musician panel that was asked to choose the more expressive version. By and large, the original versions were perceived as more expressive, thus supporting the common claim that intonation is a means for adding expressivity to a performance.0472Sundberg, Johan, Filipa M.B., Lã y Himonides, Evangelos . Each VHI item was answered twice in a row; the first answer referred to the condition of not wearing a facemask (henceforth, the Without condition) and the second to the condition of using a facemask (henceforth, the With condition). VHI scores were collected via Google Forms (Google, Mountain View, California), targeting 2 groups of speakers of different nationalities, Portuguese (n = 261) and Spanish (n = 297). A Wilcoxon test was carried out to compare VHI scores between With and Without conditions for each group of speakers; a Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare groups within each condition. Results suggested that VHI overall scores and scores for all dimensions were higher for the With condition, for both Portuguese and Spanish speakers. When comparing groups of speakers, Spanish speakers presented higher scores for functional and emotional dimensions, for both With and Without conditions. In addition, the overall score for the Without condition was higher for Spanish speakers. No differences between groups were found for the total VHI score for the With condition. When comparing overall VHIdiff between speakers, that is, the difference in the VHI total score between With and Without conditions, no significant differences could be found. Thus, a multiple regression analysis was carried out between the VHIdiff and the independent variables of interest: age, sex, smoking habits, professional occupation, nationality, facemask type and its hours of use. The resulting model providing the highest association suggested that 2.5% of the variation in overall VHIdiff total score could be associated with sex, smoking habits, and professional level. Female smokers who use their voices during prolonged hours at work (e.g., teachers, lawyers, sales people) presented a higher VHI total score when wearing a mask. Future voice-related health interventions should address preventive strategies towards speaking behaviors leading to vocal fatigue and vocal effort as a consequence of compulsory facemask use, especially with respect to female professional voice users who smoke.03372Polo Cano, Nuria y Lã, Filipa Martins Baptista . Methods: Pain and posture (forward head posture, scapular posture and lumbar lordosis) were compared between two groups of preparatory and secondary school students, matched for age and sex: those who have accordion lessons, hence accordionists (n=16) and those who never have studied a musical instrument, hence non-instrumentalists (n=16). Results: Students having accordion lessons reported significantly more pain in the shoulder, wrist/hand and thoracic regions (p<0.05), showed a significantly more forward head posture (accordionists (median±IQ distance) = 35.6º ± 7.8º, non-instrumentalists (median±IQ distance) = 45.3º±10.8º; p <0.05), and a significantly increased lumbar lordosis (accordionists (median±IQ 14 distance) = 55.5º ± 30.6º, non-musicians (median±IQ distance)= 39.0º ± 3.9º, p <0.05). No significant differences were found for scapular posture between groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that children and adolescents who play the accordion have an increased forward head posture and lumbar lordosis and a tendency to report more pain than children and adolescents who do no play any musical instrument0772Liliana, Aparicio, Filipa M.B., Lã y Silva, Anabela G. . This work focuses on the explicit predictive control of hybrid systems using two free Matlab/Simulink toolboxes designed specifically to synthesize and simulate controllers for this kind of systems. A case study is considered. The system is modeled, from experimental results, after the longitudinal dynamics of a commercial car at low speed. Simulation results are analyzed and a comparative study of both toolboxes is carried out0ponencia congreso322Mañoso, Carolina, Pérez de Madrid, Ángel y Romero, Miguel(2015) .Explicit predictive control of a hybrid system: A case study: Control of the longitudinal dynamics of a comercial vehicle at very low speed. .En: Singapore. In the 12th century this piece was transformed in the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos (Burgos) with the addition of Christian-themed enamels and reused as a reliquary. The appropriation of this object within the ideological context of the Christian expansion in the Iberian Peninsula allows us to reflect on the meaning given to it by the Silos monks. Moreover, a comparative study of the casket with Romanesque sculpture shows the existence of important iconographic influences of this piece in Christian art that have not been sufficiently studied until now. Its analysis offers clues about the way in which figurative motifs could be transmitted from Andalusi to Christian art and about the symbolic purposes with which they were used. This work highlights the need to study conjointly the transfer of artistic pieces and the transmission of figurative motifs from one context to another in addition to proposing a methodology for their study.0512Monteira Árias, Inés . Based on this premise, we test whether behavioral intentions to engage in desirable but difficult actions are more likely in an abstract mindset than a concrete mindset. We experimentally manipulated (Studies 1 through 4 using cognitive primes) and measured as a personal disposition (Study 5 using the Behavioral Identification Form) the construal level to evaluate its influence on the willingness to perform challenges. The behaviors tested focused on self-benefits (Studies 4 and 5) and benefits to others (Studies 1 through 3 and 5). Studies 1 and 2 included only demanding behaviors, whereas Studies 3 through 5 included both difficult and easy conditions. In Studies 1 and 2, the participants were more motivated to attempt a difficult task when they were in an abstract mindset. In Studies 3 through 5, the participants in the abstract (compared to concrete) mindset reported a greater willingness and commitment to attempt desirable but demanding behaviors. Finally, in Study 5, the influence of the construal level on the global behavioral plan index (three behaviors) was moderated by feasibility. A major advantage of the ERP technique is its high temporal resolution that enables the study of task-related neural activity at the millisecond level. For example, ERP studies of bilingualism have shown that developmental changes in the ability to discriminate native and foreign speech sounds can experimentally be traced by the presence or absence of a specific ERP component (the mismatch negativity). They have also revealed latency delays in a semantic-related ERP component (the N400) in bilinguals compared to monolinguals, as well as in bilinguals reading in their L1 or L2 language. These studies have also highlighted the importance of L2 proficiency level and age of acquisition on bilingual language processing. Moreover, ERP studies have pointed out potential mechanisms of avoidance of interference between languages (the NoGo N200 effect). The present review aims to describe and integrate the main results of the selected ERP studies on bilingualism and to provide an overview of how different ERP components can be used to address important theoretical questions in this field. Finally, we suggest potential research directions to clarify unresolved issues and to advance this emerging field of research.0282Moreno, Eva M., Rodríguez-Fornells, Antoni y Laine, Matti . For all the cases examined, two innovations are introduced in the solar subsystem, compared to other similar studies. Firstly, the heat transfer fluid in the receiver is either a pressurised gas or a supercritical fluid. Secondly, the receiver is composed of compact structures performing as absorber panels, arranged in a radial configuration. The investigation considers different supercritical CO2 recompression cycles of 50 MWe, including a novel proposal of a directly coupled cycle with heat input downstream of the turbine. Furthermore, the study evaluates different heat transfer fluids in the receiver, specifically CO2, N2, and He, concluding that the former is preferred due to its better thermal performance. The main results show that an increase in the receiver inlet pressure yields to a reduction in its size, favouring the thermal efficiency but penalising the optical efficiency of the solar field. Therefore, optimal working pressures may exist for each configuration, depending on the operating temperature. When comparing the optimal configurations, it is observed that the plant based on the intercooling cycle demonstrates the highest overall efficiency, reaching 32.05%. At last, an economic analysis is conducted to assess the viability of the identified optimal configurations. In this regard, the plant based on the partial-cooling cycle exhibits the lowest levelised cost of electricity at 0.15 $/kWh. This is primarily due to its lower investment cost. The innovative directly coupled cycle follows closely with a cost of 0.17 $/kWh, driven by its high electricity production resulting from its low self-consumption.0472Montes, M.J., Guedez, R., Linares, J.I. y Reyes-Belmonte, M.A. . In this study, we present a Mixed-Effects Model with Crossed Random effects (MEM-CR) for individuals and variables, and compare it with two existing structural equation models for multivariate longitudinal data, namely the Curve-of-Factor-Scores (CUFFS) and the Factor-of-Curve-Scores (FOCUS). We compare these models in two types of longitudinal studies based on balanced and unbalanced data: panel studies and cohort-sequential designs, respectively. We illustrate the performance of these statistical techniques using empirical data from two studies (MHS, a panel study, and NLSY79, a cohort-sequential design) with discrete and continuous time metric modeling, respectively. We conclude that MEMs-CR provide relevant information about the developmental trajectories of individuals and variables in multivariate longitudinal data under either type of data condition. We discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of our findings.0312Martínez-Huertas, José Ángel y Ferrer, Emilio . At the beginning of our work, in 2004, there were very few research papers on this topic, and no commercial web search engine would provide this type of facility. For this reason, our research methodology initially focused on the design and organisation (together with Prof. Sekine from New York University) of a competitive evaluation campaign for Web People Search systems. Once the campaign had been run for two years, we used the standard test suites built to perform our own empirical studies on the nature and challenges of the task. The evaluation campaign, WePS, was organized in 2007 (as a SemEval 2007 task) and in 2009 (as a WWW 2009 workshop). WePS was crucial in the process to lay the foundations of a proper scientific study of the Web People Search problem. These were the main accomplishments: • Standardisation of the problem: now a majority of researchers focus on the problem as a search results mining task (clustering and information extraction), as it has been defined in WePS. • Creation of standard benchmarks for the task: since the first WePS campaign in 2007, the number of publications related to Web People Search has grown substantially, and most of them use the WePS test suites as a de-facto standard benchmark. As of summer 2009, there were already more than 70 research papers citing WePS overviews; this not only suggests that WePS has indeed become a standard reference for the task, but also that it has contributed to arouse the interest in this kind of research problems. • Design of evaluation metrics for the task: 1. We have performed a careful formal analysis of several extrinsic clustering evaluation metrics based on formal constraints, to conclude that BCubed metrics are the most suitable for the task. We have also extended the original BCubed definition to allow for overlapping clusters, which is a practical requirement of the task. Our results are general enough to be employed in other clustering tasks. 2. We have introduced a new metric combination function, Unanimous Improvement Ratio (UIR), which, unlike Van Rijsbergen’s F, does not require an a-priori weighting of metrics (in our case, BCubed Precision and Recall). In an extensive empirical study we have shown that UIR provides rich information to compare the performance of systems, which was impossible with previous existing metric combinations functions (most prominently F). Using the results of the WePS-2 campaign, we have shown that F and UIR provide complementary information and, altogether, constitute a powerful analytical tool to compare systems. Although we have tested UIR only in the context of our task, it could be potentially useful in any task where several evaluation metrics are needed to capture the quality of a system, as it happens in several Natural Language Processing problems. Using the test suites produced in the two WePS evaluation campaigns, we have then performed a number of empirical studies in order to enhance a better understanding and comprehension of both the nature of the task involved and the way to solve it: • First, we have studied the potential effects of using (interactive) query re- finements to perform the Web People Search task. We have discovered that, although in most occasions there is an expression that can be used as a nearperfect refinement to retrieve all and only those documents referring to an individual, the nature of these ideal refinements is unpredictable and very unlikely to be hypothesized by the user. This confirms the need for search results clustering, and also suggests that looking for an optimal refinement may be a strategy of automatic systems to accomplish the task (and one that has not been used by any participant in the WePS campaigns). • Second, we have studied the usefulness of linguistic (computationally intensive) features as compared to word n-grams and other cheap features to solve our clustering problem. Notably, named entities, which are the most popular feature immediately after bag-of-words approaches, does not seem to provide a direct competitive advantage to solve the task. We have reached this conclusion abstracting from a particular choice of Machine Learning and Text Clustering algorithms, by using a Maximal Pairwise Accuracy estimator introduced in this thesis. • As a side effect of our empirical study, we have built a system which, using the confidence of a binary classifier (whether two pages are coreferent or not) as a similarity metric between document pairs to feed a Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering algorithm, provides the best results for the task known to us (F0.5 = 0.83 vs. 0.82 for the best WePS-2 system), without using computationally intensive linguistic features.0Doctoral Thesis8312Artiles Picón, Javier. Web people search . 2009. Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (España). The methodology is used to select, among many others, the optimal composite material whose properties are used afterwards to simulate several pipe sections by finite element analysis, comparing the results with a well-known nuclear-grade steel, WWER 15Kh2MFAA. The most suitable composite material according to the defined criteria is composed of a phenolic resin matrix reinforced with long boron fibres and exhibit great properties to be used in a nuclear reactor environment: good radiation resistance and mechanical properties with a very low density at low cost. It can be concluded that, in some cases, composite material pipes can be a better option than steel ones. Extending the method to be employed in other industries or with other components could be seen as future works.0322Merayo, David, Rodríguez Prieto, Álvaro y Camacho, Ana María . Flow ball devices have been used as teaching tools to provide visual real-time feedback of airflow during singing. This study aims at exploring static back pressure and ball height as function of flow for two devices, marketed as flow ball and floating ball game. Study Design. This is a comparative descriptive study. Methods. A flow-driven vocal tract simulator was used to investigate the aerodynamic properties of these two devices, testing them for four different ball sizes. The flow range investigated was between 0 and 0.5 L/s. Audio, flow, pressure, and ball height were recorded. Results. The flow pressure profiles for both tested devices were similar to those observed in previous studies on narrow tubes. For lifting the ball, both devices had a flow and a pressure threshold. The tested floating ball game required considerably higher back pressure for a given flow as compared with the flow ball. Conclusions. Both tested devices have similar effects on back pressure as straws of 3.7 and 3.0 mm in diameter for the flow ball and the floating ball game, respectively. One might argue that both devices could be used as tools for practicing semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, with the additional benefit of providing real-time visual feedback of airflow during phonation. The flow threshold, combined with the flow feedback, would increase awareness of flow, rather than of pressure, during exercises using a flow ball device.0362Filipa M.B., Lã, Wistbacka, Greta, Amarante Andrade, Pedro y Granqvist, Svante . Recent studies point towards a fourth core symptom of the disorder related to the emotional information processing that would explain the repercussions that ADHD has on the social, academic, and professional life of the people affected. This review aims to describe emotion dysregulation features as well as the brain activity associated in adults with ADHD. A search of the scientific literature was launched in specialized databases: PsycInfo, Medline, Eric, PsycArticle, Psicodoc and Scopus, following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-two articles met the inclusion criteria: (a) an ADHD clinical diagnosis, (b) participants over 18 years old, (c) emotion regulation measurement, (d) empirical studies, and (c) in English. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies included, they were classified into three sections: measures and features of emotion regulation (ER) in people with ADHD, neurological and psychophysiological activity related to ER, and treatments. The studies found that meet the selection criteria are scarce and very heterogeneous both in aims and in sample features. Adults with ADHD show a more frequent use of non-adaptive emotion regulation strategies compared to people without ADHD symptoms. Moreover, emotion dysregulation was associated with symptom severity, executive functioning, psychiatric comorbidities, and even with criminal conviction. Different patterns of brain activity were observed when people with and without ADHD were compared. These results may suggest that psychopharmacological treatments as well as behavioral therapies could be useful tools for improving emotional difficulties in adult ADHD.0262Soler-Gutiérrez, Ana-María, Pérez-González, Juan Carlos y Mayas, Julia . This study analyses and compares the first full translation (conducted by Manuel de la Escalera and published by Destino in 1966), its revision by Laura Sandoval for Hoja de Lata publishers in 2015, and a partial translation performed in 2015 by the author of the present disssertation for his degree’s final year project. The analysis is restricted to the first two chapters of the book (although other parts, as well as the book as a whole, are brought into play when opportune), and finds its theoretical framework in the De Beaugrand and Dressler’s seven standards of textuality, with an emphasis on the different approaches used by the translators due to the different contexts in which they worked. Additionally, the use of footnotes in all three versions is analysed – drawing on its characterisation by Gerard Genette as well as on Vicente Marrero Pulido’s classification– and the figure of Manuel de la Escalera is delved into, given the relevance of his biography as a political prisoner and as a literary author. His example is a clear illustration of how the personal circumstances and the socio-political context of translators can have a direct influence on their work.0Doctoral Thesis5492Turégano Acosta, Víctor. This paper identifies the main determinants that aect GHG emissions growth and assesses their impact and dierences among countries in Europe. Previous studies have produced inconclusive results and presented several limitations, such as the lack of quality of the data used, the reduced identification of determinants and the use of methods that did not enable hypothesis testing. Conversely, this research identifies an extended list of determinants of GHG emissions, performs an in-depth statistical analysis and contrasts the significance of determinants using panel data and multiple linear regression models for the period 1990–2017 for the main Eurozone countries. The study found that GDP and final energy intensity are the main drivers for the reduction of GHG emissions in Europe. Furthermore, energy prices are not significant and heterogeneous results are found for the renewable energy, fuel mix and carbon intensity determinants, pointing to a dierent behavior at the country level. The uneven impact of the main determinants of GHG emission growth suggest that a dierentiated application of European policies at country level will enhance the eciency of mitigation eorts in Europe.0272González-Sánchez, Mariano y Martín-Ortega, Juan Luis . However, the most commonly used estimation method for CDMs, marginal maximum likelihood estimation with Expectation–Maximization (MMLE-EM), can present difficulties when sample sizes are small. This study compares the results of different estimation methods for CDMs under varying sample sizes using simulated and empirical data. The methods compared include MMLE-EM, Bayes modal, Markov chain Monte Carlo, a non-parametric method, and a parsimonious parametric model such as Restricted DINA. We varied the sample size, and assessed the bias in the estimation of item parameters, the precision in attribute classification, the bias in the reliability estimate, and computational cost. The findings suggest that alternative estimation methods are preferred over MMLE-EM under low sample-size conditions, whereas comparable results are obtained under large sample-size conditions. Practitioners should consider using alternative estimation methods when working with small samples to obtain more accurate estimates of CDM parameters. This study aims to maximize the potential of CDMs by providing guidance on the estimation of the parameters.0242Sorrel, Miguel A., Escudero, Scarlett, Nájera, Pablo, Schames Kreitchmann, Rodrigo y Vázquez-Lira, Ramsés . Making use of radiometric data sets published in the context of selected palaeotsunami studies by independent research groups from different countries, Marriner et al. (2017) carried out statistical and time series analyses. They compared their results with an assessment of Mediterranean storminess since the mid-Holocene that was previously published by Kaniewski et al. (2016) based on a single-core study from coastal Croatia. Marriner et al. (2017) now present “previously unrecognized” 1500-year “tsunami megacycles” which they suggest correlating with Mediterranean climate deterioration. They conclude that up to 90 % of all the ‘tsunamis’ identified in original tsunami papers used for their study are “better ascribed to periods of heightened storminess”. In this response, we show that (i) the comparison of statistical data describing storm and tsunami events presented by Marriner et al. (2017) is incorrect both from a geographical and a statistical point of view, (ii) the assumed periods of central Mediterranean storminess published by Kaniewski et al. (2016) are missing convincing geological and geochronological evidence and are statistically incorrect, (iii) the palaeotsunami data that was originally collected by different groups of authors were manipulated by Marriner et al. (2017) in a way that the resulting data set – used as a benchmark for the entire study of these authors – is wrong and inaccurate, and that (iv) Marriner et al. (2017) did not address or even negate the original sedimentological studies’ presentation of comparative tsunami versus storm deposits for the selected individual localities. Based on a thorough and detailed evaluation of the geoscientific background and the methodological approach of the studies by Kaniewski et al. (2016) and Marriner et al. (2017), we conclude that there is no serious and reliable geoscientific evidence for increased storminess in the (central) Mediterranean Sea between 3400 – 2550, 2000 –1800, 1650 –1450, 1300 – 900 and 400 –100 cal BP. The impact of those storms in the Mediterranean, producing geological traces somewhat comparable to those caused by tsunamis, is insignificantly small. For the period 1902 – 2017, Mediterranean tsunamis make up 73 – 98 % of all combined extreme wave events (EWE) leading to coastal flooding and appeared up to 181 times deadlier than comparable storm effects. This is the reason why coastal Mediterranean research has focused on Holocene records of the tsunami hazard, while research on comparable storm effects is of lower significance. The validity of geological evidence for Mediterranean EWE and their interpretation as caused by palaeotsunami impacts thus remains untouched. Tsunamis, in most cases directly and indirectly induced by seismo-tectonics, have always been a much greater threat to Mediterranean coastal regions than comparable storm effects. ‘Tsunami megacycles’ as expressions of a 1500-year periodicity centered on the Little Ice Age, 1600 and 3100 cal BP that were correlated with questionable storm data do not exist. Cause and effect relationships work the other way round: Major tsunami events, testified by historical accounts, such as those that occurred in 1908 AD, 1755 AD, 1693 AD and 365 AD, induced numerous studies along Mediterranean coasts. These investigations resulted in a large number of publications that specifically focus on those time periods, suspected by Marriner et al. (2017) to bear signs of increased storminess, namely 200 – 300 BP and 1600 BP. The Mediterranean tsunami record cannot be ascribed to periods of increased storminess. On the contrary, the tsunami record as interpreted by the authors of the original papers cited by Marriner et al. (2017), is due to the outstandingly high seismo-tectonic activity of the region. Mediterranean tsunamis are mostly triggered by earthquakes or by earthquake-related secondary effects such as underwater mass movements. The study by Marriner et al. (2017) is also problematic because it includes simple basic statistical mistakes and major methodological inconsistencies. The geomorphological and sedimentary background of EWE deposits was not taken into account. The ‘broad brush’ approach used by Marriner et al. (2017) to sweep sedimentary deposits from tsunami origin into the storm bag origin, just on the basis of (false) statistics coupled with very broad and unreliable palaeoclimatic indicators and time frames, is misleading. The distortion of original data collected and interpreted by other research groups by Marriner et al. (2017) is particularly disturbing. Their publication is also bound to question in this case the effectiveness of scientific quality assurance in modern publishing commerce. Marriner et al. (2017: 7) talk down the considerable risk to human settlements and infrastructure along Mediterranean coasts in relation to tsunami and earthquake hazards. Their conclusion is not only wrong as a result of their incorrect data mining and analyses, it is also irresponsible with regard to national and international efforts of tsunami and earthquake risk mitigation.03272Vott, Andreas, Bruins, Hendrik J., Gawehn, Matthijs, Goodman-Tchernov, Beverly N., Martini, Paolo Marco de, Kelletat, Dieter, Mastronuzzi, Giuseppe, Reicherter, Klaus, Robke, Bjorn R., Scheffers, Anja, Willershauser, Timo, Avramidis, Pavlos, Bellanova, Piero, Lario, Javier y et al. . Research into the development of molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) with new or improved morphologies – which involves modification of the polymerisation process – is therefore underway. This paper reports a comparative study of non-covalent MIPs synthesised by “bulk” polymerisation using digoxin as template. These were synthesised under different conditions, i.e., changing the functional monomers employed (methacrylic acid or 2-vinylpyridine), the porogens (acetonitrile or dichloromethane) used, and by altering the volume of the latter. The polymerisation process was allowed to proceed either under UV light or in a thermostat-controlled waterbath. The surface morphology (was determined by scanning electron microscopy) and the ability of the different polymers to selectively rebind the template was then evaluated.0272Paniagua González, Gema, Fernández Hernando, Pilar y <a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de Durand Alegría, J. A case studybibliuned:master-Filologia-LIA-PvbachaniWriting has always been an arduous task for our students. It has always enjoyed a high profile in the English classroom, the greater part of evaluation based on it, but it is the skill least practised due to the limitations in time in the classroom. If we compare written language to oral language, we can appreciate that the main difference is that writing is permanent and can be redrafted whereas oral communication is ephemeral and spontaneous. Written language has a deliberate plan and a purpose and therefore students are taught the different structures for a descriptive, narrative, expository, dialogic or argumentative text. Unlike oral communication, written language is unilateral and non-reciprocal so this means that the writer needs to anticipate problems or difficulties for a presumed reader as there is no negotiation of meaning. To clarify meaning, and to guarantee the integrity of the message, organisational devices need to be used such as “firstly”, “secondly”, “moreover” and “in conclusion”.0Doctoral Thesis6612Bachani Pardasani, Purwa Vasdev. It compares quantitatively and qualitatively the electoral manifestos of four radical right parties —Vox, RN, UKIP, and Brexit Party—, and shows that borders are basic factors in the process of decontestation of “the people” and construction of exclusion-inclusion narratives. Likewise, this analysis exemplifies how (re)bordering claims are usually justified and articulated via populist discursive elements such as antagonism, morality, idealization of society, popular sovereignty and personalistic leadership. This article demonstrates that the border can become a method to study populism and vice versa and that crossfertilization between the borders and populism literatures is desirable. Further research is needed to understand whether populists’ selective instrumentalization of borders and equivalential logic leads to a non-binary hierarchical “othering” and the emergence of a populist “meta-us”.02082Olivas Osuna, José Javier . Case study: ECO European Projectbibliuned:425-Sosuna-0012This research reviews the formative model of the sMOOCs (social MOOC) characterized by the interaction and the implication of the participants who, relying on collective intelligence, look for the co-creation of knowledge in every educational action. The fieldwork focuses on the analysis of the “Step by Step” sMOOC of ECO Project (the second and third editions), that aims at the training of e-teachers and the transfer of learning to the professional field. The research methodology is mixed, with quantitative and qualitative techniques: it uses a semi-structured questionnaire, in order to compare possible bivariate correlations between the different variables; it conducts a content analysis of the fragments of messages written by the participants in the forums of the course. One of the most significant conclusions is the high degree of satisfaction of the participants with regard to the value of the course for their professional life. This form of transfer of the learning process leads to the proposal of a new modality for MOOCs, the tMOOC as “transferMOOC”.05432Marta-Lazo, Carmen, Frau-Meigs, Divina y Osuna-Acedo, Sara . To analyze the effects of this omission, in the present study, we define the behavior of prices and volume via stochastic processes subordinated to the time elapsing between two consecutive transactions in the market. Using simulated data and market data from companies of different sizes and capitalization levels, we compare the results of measuring risk using prices compared to using both prices and volumes. The results indicate that traditional measures of market risk behave inversely to the degree of liquidity of the asset, thereby underestimating the risk of liquid assets and overestimating the risk of less liquid assets.0582González-Sánchez, Mariano, Ibáñez Jiménez, Eva M. y Segovia San Juan, Ana I. . Lockdown measures have provoked a disruption of daily life with a great impact over older adults’ health and well-being. Nevertheless, eudaimonic well‐being plays a protective role in confronting adverse circumstances, such as the COVID-19 situation. This study aims to assess the association between age and psychological well-being (personal growth and purpose in life). Young–old (60–70 years) and old–old (71–80 years) community- dwelling Spaniards (N = 878) completed a survey and reported on their sociodemographic characteristics and their levels of health, COVID-19 stress-related, appraisal, and personal resources. Old–old did not evidence poorer psychological well-being than young–old. Age has only a negative impact on personal growth. The results also suggest that the nature of the COVID-19 impact (except for the loss of a loved one) may not be as relevant for the older adults’ well-being as their appraisals and personal resources for managing COVID- related problems. In addition, these results suggest that some sociodemographic and health-related variables have an impact on older adults’ well-being. Thus, perceived-health, family functioning, resilience, gratitude, and acceptance had significant associations with both personal growth and purpose in life. Efforts to address older adults’ psychological well-being focusing on older adults’ personal resources should be considered0252López, J., Perez-Rojo, G., Noriega, Cristina, Carretero, I., Velasco, Cristina, Martínez-Huertas, José Ángel, López-Frutos, P. y Galarraga, Leyre . The preliminary statistical study reveals (i) high volatility, (ii) an inverse leverage effect, (iii) skewed distributions and (iv) high kurtosis. To capture the nonnormal characteristics observed in cryptocurrency data, we verified the goodness of fit of a large set of distributions, both symmetric and skewed distributions such as skewed Student-t, skewed generalized t, skewed generalized error and the inverse hyperbolic sign distributions. The results show that the skewed distributions outperform normal and Student-t distributions in fitting cryptocurrency data, although there is no one skewed distribution that systematically better fits the data. In addition, we compare these distributions in terms of their ability to forecast the market risk of cryptocurrencies. In line with the results obtained in the statistical analysis, we find that the skewed distributions provide better risk estimates than the normal and Student-t distributions, both in short and long positions, with SGED being the distribution that provides better results.0732López-Martín, Carmen, Arguedas-Sanz, Raquel y Benito Muela, Sonia . The current socioeconomic and educational contexts derived from COVID-19 has led university institutions to develop methodological innovations in the teaching-learning process. Among these strengthening measures are the MOOCs, the most appropriate strategy to bring students closer to new digital platforms that favor the acquisition of knowledge. A methodological pluralism, combining quantitative and qualitative perspectives, has been used. The main results of the descriptive analysis compare the data of students enrolled in the MOOC, “Social and Health Care and Social Services in Social Work”, and other related bachelor’s and master’s degree courses during the four years analyzed. One of the conclusions is the emerging possibility of offering university studies that are more in line with the current teleworking market. The development of online methodologies favors the democratization of education, reaching the student body as a whole and universalizing content and learning. Among the main conclusions, it is worth highlighting the degree of satisfaction shown by the students who took advantage of the MOOC, and the training opportunities afforded by MOOC courses, during the time of COVID-19.0672Gómez Gómez, Francisco y Munuera Gómez, Pilar . This project aims to shed light on this issue by analysing how the perceived effectiveness of democratic and authoritarian political leaders are shaped by the common dimensions of social perception, such as competence/warmth, masculinity/femininity, and human uniqueness/human nature. Accordingly, three experimental studies were conducted. In Study 1 (n = 1001), we revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, feminine and human. In Study 2 (n = 548) and Study 3 (n = 622), we investigated whether these dimensions of perception mediated the relationship between leaders and their perceived effectiveness. The results revealed that democratic leaders are perceived as effective in cooperative scenarios due to their competence, femininity, and human nature. Alternatively, democratic leaders are preferred in ambiguous contexts due to their competence and cognitive flexibility, that is, human nature. In contrast, authoritarian leaders are perceived as effective in competitive scenarios because of their masculinity. In Study 3, we manipulated the (in)stability of socio-economic contexts. The results revealed that democratic and authoritarian leaders are perceived as more competent, warm, human and more effective in socio-economic contexts that are stable compared with those that are unstable. The implications of the results regarding the emergence of authoritarian leaders are discussed.01592Sainz, Mario, Moreno-Bella, Eva y Torres-Vega, Laura C. . Method: Measurements of head and scapular posture and muscle strength were compared between flutists with 10 or less years of practice (developing flutists; n=9), flutists with more than 10 years of practice (professional flutists; n=9) and singers (n=9). Posture was measured using a goniometer and a tape measure; strength was assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: Significant differences were found between groups concerning forward head posture only; developing flutists showed a higher forward head posture compared to the other two groups (p <0.05). No significant differences were found for scapular posture neither for muscle strength. Conclusions: Developing flutists showed significantly more forward head posture. This supports the need to revise existing music curricula targeting the inclusion of compulsory disciplines on music medicine.0352Teixeira, Ziliane Lima de Oliveira, Filipa M.B., Lã y Gonçalves da Silva, Anabela . Under this standard, European Insurance and Occupational Pension Authority (EIOPA), as a regulatory board, has established that the Smith–Wilson (SW) model can be used as the model to estimate interest rate curve. This paper aims to analyze whether this model adjusts to the market curve better than Nelson–Siegel (NS) and whether the values set for the parameters are adequate. Design/methodology/approach – This empirical study analyzes whether the SW interest rate curve shows lower root mean squared errors than the NS curve for a sample of daily prices of Spanish Government bonds between 2014 and 2019. Findings – The results indicate that NS adjusts the market data better, the parameters recommended by the EIOPA correspond to the maximum values observed in the sample period and the current recommended curve for insurance companies underestimates company operations. Originality/value – This paper verifies that the criterion of the last liquid point does not allow for selecting an optimal sample to adjust the curve and criteria based on prices without arbitrage opportunities are more appropriate.0252Gonzalez-Sanchez, Mariano y Rodriguez-Sanchez, Sonia . In the financial literature, there are many papers dedicated to compare VaR approaches but there are few studies focusing in comparing ES approaches. To cover this gap, we have carried out a comprenhensive comparative of VaR and ES models applied to IBEX-35 stock index. The comparison has been carried out from a twofold perspective: accurate risk measure and loss functions. The results indicate that the method based on the conditional Extreme Value Theory (EVT) is the best in estimating market risk, outperforming Parametric method and Filter Historical Simulation.0762Benito Muela, Sonia, López Martin, Carmen y Arguedas-Sanz, Raquel . All of them show high sensitivity to radiation regardless of whether it is ionizing or partially ionizing radiation based on their luminescence properties (cathodoluminescence -CL- or thermoluminescence -TL-). CL emission differs significantly among them in shape and intensity due to their chemical compositions. LiF samples display three maxima at: (i) 300-450 nm linked to intrinsic and structural defects, (ii) a green waveband probably due to F3+ centres or the presence of hydroxyl groups and (iii) the red-infrared emission band associated with F2 centres. However, CL spectra from the CaF2 dosimeters display meaningful differences due to the dopant. TLD-200 is characterized by an emission with four sharp individual peaks in the green-IR spectral region (due to the Dy3+), whilst TLD-400 exhibits a broad maximum peaked at ̴ 500 nm (linked to the Mn2+). On the other hand, the variation in the TL glow curves allows to discriminate the TLDs exposed to beta and UVC radiation since they give rise to different chemicalphysical processes and that have been studied from the estimation of the kinetic parameters by means of the Computerised Glow Curve Deconvolution (CGCD) method.0692Boronat, Cecilia, Correcher, Virgilio, Bravo Yagüe, Juan Carlos, Sarasola Martín, Iciar, García Guinea, Javier y Benavente Cuevas, José Francisco .
