This research analysed the case of a massive distance learning university that rapidly changed the final assessment (N=126,653 undergraduate students in 2020) from face-to-face exams to entirely online exams. The research focused on the influence of online assessment on academic performance and students’ perception of the new method. Two data sources were used: the contrast of academic performance indicators (assessment, success and achievement rates, and average marks obtained) between the online examination call and the previous ones with face-to-face examinations; and a questionnaire to a sample of students (n=714) on their perception of the online assessment experience. The results show that all the academic performance indicators in the 28 Bachelor Degrees offered at the university increased when the final assessment method turned to online due to the pandemic crisis; and that a majority of students are more favourable to online assessment methods. The discussion places these findings in a context of rapid change, and concludes by identifying the possible implications of online assessment for student retention, organisational challenges, as well as possible further studies.0802Domínguez-Figaredo, Daniel, Gil-Jaurena, Inés y Morentin-Encina, Javier . The validation of the method was performed through the establishment of the external standard calibration curves and the analytical figures of merit. Limits of detection ranging from 0.006 to 0.02 mg L−1 and 0.007 to 0.09 mg L−1 were achieved using DAD and FLD detection, respectively. The experimental conditions to carry out the hydrolysis procedure to obtain flavonoid aglycones from flavonoid glycosides have been optimized applying an experimental design and the response surface methodology. The final conditions selected were 2.5 M HCl during 45 min at 85 °C. The repeatability of this procedure was assayed and relative standard deviation (RSD) values for concentration of quercetin and luteolin compounds were lower than 2%. The quantification of quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol compounds was carried out in less than 6 min in paprika samples by means of the external standard calibration. The analytes were extracted with methanol and the extracts were previously subjected to a cleanup procedure to extend the use of the chromatographic column.0322Monago Maraña, Olga, Muñoz de la Peña, Arsenio, Galeano Díaz , Teresa y Muñoz de la Peña, Arsenio .
The vast Aterian civilization occupied the entire area of the modern Sahara, between the Nile, the
Senegal and the Maghreb during tens of thousands of years. Its tools are well known, which tend to become
smaller and lighter during the later phases in the Northwest (modern Morocco). Rigorously Paleolithic art is
now known from this period in Upper Egypt, dating prior to 23,000 BP (Huyge 2013). Its stylistic patterns are
identical to those of rare sites attributed to definitive Solutrean in Iberia, specifically when bifacial industries
arrived as the «Middle Solutrean». The Proto-Solutrean phases grouped under this term in fact belong
to Gravettian variants coming from Central Europe and were incorrectly interpreted. During its European
expansion, the Solutrean creates a clear break in the prehistory of Europe. Limited in its extremely western
part, it rapidly disappeared when the last Gravettians adopted ways of life and values leading to the expansion
and development of the Magdalenian.05672Otte, Marcel . We explore unemployment shocks registered in some European Union countries during the so-called Great Recession. To do so, we apply the synthetic control methodology, which has been rarely used in the field of distributive analyses. We use this approach to identify the impact of unemployment shocks on material deprivation and conduct different sensitivity analyses to test the results. We find that contrary to the traditional assumption of the low sensitivity of material deprivation measures to changes in the economic cycle, unemployment shocks have a significant and rapid impact on material deprivation. This conclusion holds even when extending the period of analysis, changing the indicator of material deprivation, or modifying the definition of unemployment shock.0502Ayala, Luis, Martín-Román, Javier y Navarro-Ruiz, Carolina . After reviewing the literature on AI literacy projects, we found that most educational practices in this area are based on teaching programming fundamentals, primarily to K-12 students. This leaves out citizens and those who are primarily interested in understanding the implications of automated decision- making systems, rather than in learning to code. To address these gaps, this article explores the methodological contributions of responsible AI education practices that focus first on stakeholders when designing learning experiences for different audiences and contexts. The article examines the weaknesses identified in current AI literacy projects, explains the stakeholder-first approach, and analyzes several responsible AI education case studies, to illustrate how such an approach can help overcome the aforementioned limitations. The results suggest that the stakeholder-first approach allows to address audiences beyond the usual ones in the field of AI literacy, and to incorporate new content and methodologies depending on the needs of the respective audiences, thus opening new avenues for teaching and research in the field.0462Domínguez-Figaredo, Daniel y Stoyanovich, Julia . Although an important number of new multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have been designed by the scientific community, the popular Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAII) remains as a widely used baseline for performance comparison purposes. Since every evolutionary algorithm needs several parameters to be set up in order to operate, parameter control constitutes a crucial task for the effective and efficient performance of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. However, despite the advancements in parameter control for evolutionary algorithms, NSGA-II has been mainly used in the literature with fine-tuned static parameters. This paper introduces a novel and computationally lightweight self-adaptation mechanism for controlling the distribution index parameter of the polynomial mutation operator usually employed by NSGA-II in particular and by multi-objective evolutionary algorithms in general. Additionally, the classical NSGA-II using polynomial mutation with a static distribution index is compared with this new version utilizing a self-adapted parameter. The experiments carried out over twenty-five benchmark problems using three quality indicators (hypervolume, generalized spread, and modified inverted generational distance) show that the proposed self-adaptive mutator variant outperforms its static counterpart in most of the cases. This result supports the potential of self-adaptive parameter control in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms.0Doctoral Thesis902Carles Bou, José Luis. Rapid extraction of carotenoids, capsaicinoids, and tocopherols was optimized; the best conditions included ethanol as the extractant, an extraction time of 10 min in an ultrasonic bath, and a sample size of 0.1 g. The procedure provided good precision with a relative standard deviation of 1.2% for four samples. Molecular absorption spectra were obtained from 250 to 600 nm and fluorescence excitation and emission spectra were collected from 200 to 295 nm and 300 to 400 nm, respectively. Forty-eight “Pimentón de La Vera” paprika samples and 19 samples from other origins were characterized. A principal component analysis model was constructed from the absorption spectra and clustering was obtained based on the origin. Parallel factor analysis was performed on the fluorescence data and better characterization of the origin was obtained.0312Monago Maraña, Olga, Bartolomé García, Teresa de Jesús, Galeano Díaz, Teresa y Kostrzewa-Rutkowska, Z. . The analysis of superficial imprints proved that some grains were mechanically impacted before deposition. However, the percentage of grains with fresh surfaces and percussion marks was significantly lower than average values from other tsunami deposits elsewhere in the world. In this work, we discuss the reasons for such results in the context of the geomorphological setting of the areas analyzed and its influence on the microtextural signatures observed. The data presented in this study evidences a geographic dependence in the type of microtextures in the areas analyzed. For example, in Arauco the abundance of dissolution textures decreases rapidly towards the center of the embayment and increases towards the rocky headlands of its westernmost sector. By contrast, an increase of mechanical marks (e.g. fresh surfaces) is observed in the central region of the Arauco’s embayment. Similarly, in Mataquito, dissolution features are more abundant in the headlands or small capes, while there is a higher presence of mechanical marks in sandy embayments. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of the geomorphological context as a controlling factor in the intensity of mechanical imprints on the surface of quartz grains transported by tsunamis and deposited in the inner shelf and coastal areas. Therefore, our results suggest that without a detailed geomorphological contextualization microtextural discrimination can lead to misleading interpretations. Hence, there is a need for more microtextural analysis on tsunami deposits in order to assess the variability in the geographic distribution and intensity of microtextures imprinted on the surface of quartz grains deposited during a tsunami event.02862Costa, P.J.M., Rasteiro da Silva, D., Figueirinhas, L. y Lario, Javier . MIPs were synthesized under different polymerization process and their recognition efficiency was evaluated in binding studies in comparison with non-imprinted polymers. The best MIP was morphologically characterized and equilibrium assays were carried out. The MIP was evaluated as a sorbent for extraction and preconcentration of SPI from aqueous and sheep milk samples, and an off-line MISPE method followed by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV diode-array detection was established. Good linearity were obtained for SPI in a range of 24–965 μg kg−1 and the average recoveries at three spiked levels in milk samples were higher than 90% (RSD < 5%). Limit of quantification was 24.1 μg kg−1. Cross-reactivity studies from other macrolides with similar structure were tested. The optimum imprinted polymer showed a good selectivity and affinity for SPI, demonstrating the potential of the proposed MISPE for rapid, sensitive and effective sample pretreatment for selective determination of SPI in sheep milk samples.0252<a class="citation_author_name" title="Navegar por nombre de Autor de García Mayor, M. The complexity and diversity of IoT ecosystems pose unique security challenges that traditional educational approaches often fail to address comprehensively. Current curricula may provide theoretical knowledge but typically lack the practical components necessary for students to engage with real-world cybersecurity scenarios. This gap hinders the development of proficient cybersecurity professionals capable of securing complex IoT infrastructures. To bridge this educational divide, a remote online laboratory was developed, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in identifying and mitigating cybersecurity threats in an IoT context. This virtual environment simulates real IoT ecosystems, enabling students to interact with actual devices and protocols while practicing various security techniques. The laboratory is designed to be accessible, scalable, and versatile, offering a range of modules from basic protocol analysis to advanced threat management. The implementation of this remote laboratory demonstrated significant benefits, equipping students with the necessary skills to confront and resolve IoT security issues effectively. Our results show an improvement in practical cybersecurity abilities among students, highlighting the laboratory’s efficacy in enhancing IoT security education.0442Delgado, Ismael, Sancristobal, Elio, Martin, Sergio y Robles-Gómez, Antonio . Since the beginning of the eighties Treaties were graded as «Constitutional Charter», the process of European integration has increased rapidly, and the emergence of European Constitutionalism has only demonstrated the complex relationship between the Union and its Member States, between Union law and the law of its Member States. Both the State Theory and the Theory of the Constitution are to be only partially effective in defining an appropriate conceptual model to the new phenomenon of European integration. It speaks well of a new concept, that of «European constitutional League», which provides a common terminological and introduced into the Europe Union’s vision of constitutional law at different levels. It is increasingly difficult to differentiate when we are dealing with national issues and when community issues. Therefore, if we want to legitimize the role of the European Union, we will have to try to include the constitutional principles governing the Member States in this new level. Hence the ambitious concept of «European constitutional League». But nevertheless, the many theoretical problems with this model reflect the difficulty of speaking of a multilevel system in which there is no coexistence between different hierarchical levels, because ultimately it does show a incorrect connection between them.07162Jaestadt, Mathias . Microorganisms play pivotal roles in aquatic ecosystems. Free‐living protists are the main components of the eukaryotic microbial communities at the base of freshwater ecosystems. Ciliate grazing channels a large proportion of organic matter into multicellular organisms. Surprisingly, ciliates and other microorganisms are neglected in global conservation schemes. 2. Interstitial ciliates were sampled in three sites of varying human pressure on the River Manzanares (La Pedriza National Park, Spain). Abundances of trophic groups and species were adjusted to a generalized linear model (GLM Poisson regression). 3. Ciliate communities were rich in species (74 morphotypes) and although traditional microscopy retrieved a high number of species that appeared only once or in low numbers, rarefaction analyses estimated much larger species richness. These results illustrate that rarefaction assays are a useful first step for exploring the extent of the ciliate cryptic diversity in freshwater ecosystems. 4. Benthic ciliate communities changed significantly, both spatially and at a short temporal scale. The fluctuating nature of the community was manifested by the presence of many ephemeral species at the same river site, revealing a complex and transient community structure. No significant short‐term changes were observed in the physical–chemical properties. Therefore, even slight differences in the abiotic variables may cause rapid shifts of ciliate species. 5. Overall, human pressure had an effect on the interstitial (or benthic) ciliates that resulted in a reduction of species richness and their abundance.0342Quintela‐Alonso, Pablo, Pérez‐Uz, Blanca, Sanchez‐Jimenez, Abel, Murciano, Antonio, Centeno, Juan D., García‐Rodríguez, Manuel, Montero, Esperanza, Muñoz, Benito, Olmedo, Cristina, Refoyo, Pablo, Velasco‐González, Ismael y Martín‐Cereceda, Mercedes . The measurement of serum digoxin concentration is necessary owing to the narrow therapeutic range of this drug. Further, even with similar dosage regimens, the biological response of patients often results in very different concentrations of digoxin in serum. Concentrations of greater than 2.6 mmol/L are generally interpreted as toxic in adult patients. Most methods for digoxin determination are based on gas chromatography or radiochemical and enzymatic immunoassay techniques. However, some of these methods are tedious and difficult to automate. Nowadays, they are being replaced by more practical immunoassay techniques, involving, for example, fluorescent immunosensors that allow rapid, automated and selective digoxin determinations. This paper reports a new flow–through fluoroimmunosensor for digoxin determination, the function of which is based on antibodies immobilized on an inmunoreactor of controlled pore glass (CPG). The immunosensor has a detection limit of 1.20 μg/L and provides high reproducibility (RSD = 4.5% for a concentration of 0.0025 mg/L, and RSD = 6.7% for 0.01 mg/L). The optimum working concentration range was found to be 1.2×10-3 - 4.0×10-2 mg/L. The lifetime of the immunosensor was about 50 immunoassays, if stored unused its lifetime can be extended to three months. A sample speed of about 10–12 samples per hour can be attained. Possible interference from substances with structures similar to digoxin (morphine, heroine, tebaine, codeine, pentazocine and narcotine) was investigated. No cross-reactivity was seen at the highest digoxin:interferent ratio studied (1:100). The proposed fluoroimmunosensor was successfully used to determine digoxin concentrations in human serum samples.0292Fernández Hernando, Pilar, Durand Alegría, J.S., Pérez-Conde, C. y Paniagua González, Gema . Italian and Spanish families in a comparative perspectivebibliuned:23034This article analyses family changes in Italy and Spain from 1960 to 1990 and contrasts them with four Central/Northern European countries. Italy and Spain show extremely rapid family changes, which nevertheless do not lead to a convergence between southern and central/northern families. The particularities of the southern family model are a high degree of cross-generational cohabitation, a high frequency of social contacts and help within kinship, a strong institutionalization of marriage, a low female employment rate in the formal labour market, a low fertility rate, and widespread family and child-oriented attitudes. In addition, relations between generations are seen more in terms of obligations than in terms of individual choice. We conclude that the specific economic situation, the particularities of social policies and the family culture in Italy and Spain are important barriers for a further individualization of family relations in these societies. The aim of this paper is to analyse Italy and Spain as representatives of a Mediterranean type of society. The question whether such a type exists with respect to family changes will be explored here. For this purpose we use a comparative perspective. Our assumption is that the division of labour between state, family, labour market and church in Mediterranean countries is a specific one. The societal configuration in the South will be analysed from the perspective of the family. First, we will describe differences in demography and family among countries as well as cultural differences observed by opinion surveys. Second, we will develop some hypotheses in order to explain the southern family characteristics, their interrelations and their relation to other institutions. To this end, we will concentrate on the possible effects that southern modernization processes, employment and unemployment trends, family laws, social policies and some historical and cultural peculiarities in Italy and Spain have on family patterns. In this paper the hypotheses will be put forward only in a preliminary way, without testing them. The socio-economic crisis that has affected all European countries since the mid-seventies has gradually produced a collective loss of faith in the possibility of uninterrupted economic growth and disillusion concerning the programmes and promises of the welfare society. As a result of the crisis, the institutional framework began to change and the social division of responsibilities among the various institutional spheres, state, market and family, had to (and still has to) be re-negotiated (Flora 1985). In the new social and economic context, the interest in the family in the analysis of western-welfare society has become wider. From a cross-national perspective it is often assumed that southern welfare states have a different division of labour between state, market and family than other Northern/Central European societies (Ferrera 1994). Studies on this field show that, despite the development of the welfare state, the family and the ‘serving work’ (Balbo 1983) carried out by women in southern welfare societies have continued to constitute an indispensable resource for the satisfaction of many basic needs. The changing age structure of the population, the decreasing fertility rate and the emerging female employment patterns in Italy and Spain may affect the southern division of labour in an important way. While analysts are emphasizing the importance of the family for the satisfaction of many basic needs in this welfare state crisis period, the most “family-oriented” countries are moving towards a more individualistic society? Is this a contradiction? First of all, it needs to be determined to what extent the family is changing in the South and therefore we will give a general overview on these changes in the European context. Since 1965, in most European countries - with varying intensity and timing - a reduction in the fertility rate and an increase in the divorce rate has taken place. These new family behaviours have been related to the gradual diffusion of cohabitation and to the increase in births out of wedlock. During the 1970s these family changes became more radical in Scandinavia and more widespread in Central Europe, but they remained weak in Southern Europe. What was really new were the relations between sexes and generations. Equal opportunities became an important issue in public life (Roussel 1992), and changes in family roles also occurred. More women have entered the labour market, in a wider range of occupations and for a longer period than at any other time since the Industrial Revolution (Rapoport 1989).010582Jurado Guerrero, Teresa y Naldini, Manuela .
