In this paper, the authors analyse the economical settlement of the portuguese capitals in the sixteenth century Seville. From humble origins, their privileged role in the Atlantic slave trade let an array of different mercantile portuguese networks to occupy each time wider spaces not only in the urban Sevillian economy but also in the big and complex bussiness of the slave trade to the Castile Indies.05522Fernández Chaves, Manuel F. and Pérez García, Rafael M. . The Crown of Castile promoted different projects of repopulation and foundation of towns, as one of its priorities in the old frontier areas after the end of the war against the Reign of Grenade. These projects increased from the reign of the Catholic Kings until the government of the queen Juana and her son Charles V (1517-1556). Our objective is analysing this question, paying special attention to the characteristics of these new towns: the existence of a plan or a defined ideology for their government or administration, but also for their urbanization, for example. siglo XVI, y fundamentalmente en los seis

This article analyses the treatise Portugal unido y separado…, written by Pedro de Valenzuela and printed in Madrid in 1659. The clergyman Pedro Valenzuela supported the restoration of the Habsburg sovereignty in Portugal (the Portuguese crown had split from the Spanish Monarchy in 1640), and the picture he conveys is largely influenced by his political allegiance. The first part of this study is therefore dedicated to an analysis of Valenzuela’s treatise. In the second and final part of this article the ideas expressed by Valenzuela are set in context. It is then demonstrated that many of the issues raised in this book were being discussed since, at least, the late 16th century, not only in Portugal but also in various parts of the Iberian Peninsula. It is thus argued that, in order to capture the full meaning of the questions raised by Valenzuela, it is indispensable to take into account their Iberian context.06102Cardim, Pedro . un recurso renovable como la madera, en
guipuzcoano no parece producirse
provincia. A pesar de las continuas
reclamaciones de las autoridades reales y
territoriales, la obligación de dejar horca y
pendón se encontró con la oposición de
carboneros y ferrones, quienes
trasmochaban los árboles pero sin guiarlos,
perjudicando de ese modo a las
autoridades e intereses de la Marina Real.
Precisamente el incumplimiento de las
ordenanzas fue lo que provocó la aparición
de dos modelos, con usos diferenciados:
trasmochos sin guiar y trasmochos
guiados. A lo largo del siglo XIX dicha
técnica se fue perdiendo, coincidiendo con
la paulatina desaparición de la construcción
naval en madera.Due to guarantee the profit from a
renewable resource like wood, while forest
went back and it was a shortage of timber,
the inhabitants of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque
Country, introduced a system which
allowed them to combine the needs and
the demands of activities such disparate
as stockbreeding, domestic consume, iron
industry or shipbuilding. The aim of this
paper is to analyze the origin,
development and disappearance of guided
or shaped pollards in Gipuzkoa. As far as
we know, it seems that the technique
started in the Last Middle Ages, though
there are no proofs of its use until the
beginning of 16th century. The spread of it
across all gipuzkoan land did not happen
permanently until the end of 17th century,
though it was being used in the coast and
the western part of the province. Despite
the continuous claims from the Crown and
County councils, the obligation to shaped
standard and fork branches —called
«dejar horca y pendon»— was not
observed by coalmen and ironmen, who
cut trees without guide, which injured
Royal Navy’s interests. Precisely the
failure to comply with the ordinances
caused the appearance of two models with
different uses: guided pollards and not
guided pollards. In the course of 19th
century mentioned technique died out,
while the gradual disappearance of wood
shipbuilding.07272Aragón Ruano, Álvaro . Media la declaración más visible del culto
y la de fe católicos. Su estudio en la
región española de Cantabria en el
período comprendido entre los siglos XVI
y XIX presenta numerosos aspectos de
interés. El bautismo fue altamente
valorado y practicado, tanto por los laicos
como por las altas jerarquías
eclesiásticas. Fue administrado con
celeridad creciente tras el nacimiento, y
bajo la forma de «urgencia» en
numerosas ocasiones. Los sacerdotes lo
administraban con gran libertad y con
frecuencia eran también elegidos como
padrinos. Esta realidad, junto con otras,
muestran que el mencionado sacramento
no constituyó un refugio de antiguas
formas de sociabilidad contra el impulso
de la confesionalización. La comunión era
recibida principalmente en Pascua, pero la
«decencia» de la celebración y el respeto
y reverencia de los fieles fueron
deficientes al respecto. La confesión
cumplía su función anual normativa de
forma mecánica, aunque un nuevo
modelo, más interiorizado, fue
desarrollado por parte de algunas
órdenes religiosas a partir del siglo XVII.
La celebración de la confirmación, el
menos valorado sociológicamente de
todos los sacramentos, fue esporádica y
rara (con intervalos de hasta 40 años en
algunos lugares). El matrimonio católico
tuvo que luchar contra la antigua práctica
de los «esponsales» y padeció numerosas
formas de disciplinamiento social, como la
«cencerrada». En general, la práctica
sacramental muestra con claridad los
límites de la confesionalización en la
España Atlántica, incluso durante el siglo
XVIII.The sacraments have been from the
Middle Ages the most visible declaration
of the Christian worship and faith. The
study of these in the Spanish region of
Cantabria in the period that goes from the
16th to the 19th Centuries shows
numerous aspects of interest. Baptism
was highly valued and practised, both by
the laymen and by the high ecclesiastic
hierarchies. It was administered with
speed an increasing after the birth, and
under the form of «urgency» in numerous
occasions. The priest administrated it with
great freedom and often were also chosen
as godparents. This and other
informations show that the above
mentioned sacrament was not a refuge of
ancient forms of sociability against the
impulse of the confessionalization.
Communion was taken mostly in Easter,
but the «decency» of the celebration and
the respect and reverence from the faithful
should have been deficient. Confession
fulfilled his normative annual function of
mechanical form, although a new model,
more internalized, was developed by
some religious orders from the 17th
Century. Confirmation, a sociologically
least valued sacrament, was sporadic and
rare (with intervals of 40 years in some
places). The catholic marriage had to fight
against the ancient practice of the
betrothal and endured the pressure of
ancient forms of social «discipline», like
the Charivari. In general, the sacramental
practice shows clearly the limits of the
Confessionalization in the Atlantic Spain
even during the 18th Century.07142Fonseca Montes, Josué . Pignatelli, conde de Monteleone, inició
una gran campaña para fortalecer las
defensas de las principales ciudades de la
costa de Sicilia: Palermo, Trapani,
Milazzo, Siracusa y, algunos años más
tarde, incluso Messina.
anteriormente atribuido a Antonio
cuarto del siglo XVI.In 1522 the Viceroy of Sicily Ettore
Pignatelli, Count of Monteleone, started a
significant campaign for the strengthening
of the outworks of the main cities located
along the Sicilian coast: Palermo, Trapani,
Milazzo, Siracusa and, after a few years,
also Messina. The Royal Engineer Pietro
Antonio Tomasello from Padua, a military
technician from the Veneto region, was
charged with renovating the island’s
defensive system and introducing for the
first time modern circular and polygonal
ramparts in castles and city walls.
Not well known until now is the work of this
important engineer, who was active in
Sicily from 1523 until his death in 1537,
which has been reconstructed thanks to a
large archival documentation. The new
research highlights an unbroken line of
continuity in Charles V’s warfare strategy,
which was in place in Sicily since the time
of the Viceroy Count of Monteleone. As a
result, it becomes necessary to rethink the
extraordinary character generally
attributed to Ferrante Gonzaga’s military
politics by numerous historians. This
would include even rectifying the dates
and the attributions of some of the
fundamental modifications of Sicilian
fortifications: the San Salvatore Fort in
Messina, till now attributed to Antonio
Ferramolino from Bergamo, the ramped
and sloped defences in the Milazzo Castle
and the circular keep in Palermo
Castellammare (the latter two dated to the
second half of the 15th century) instead
are all works of Pietro Antonio Tomasello,
carried on during the second quarter of the
16th century.07972Vesco, Maurizio .
