a procedimientos técnicos originales.
Solutrean personal ornaments have been described as impoverished and monotonous, but recent technological
approaches indicate that it could be distinguished by distinctive methods of production. Analysis
of ivory bracelet manufacture has brought light a distinctive technique of cutting into sections by sawing
and grooving. We present the analysis of 90 shells from the Solutrean level of the Lachaud rock shelter (Dordogne,
France), which shows the use of a process of perforation which employs both sawing and pressure.
This technique permits improved control of percussion through use of a groove to guide the tool. At least
seven other French Solutrean sites may contain shells drilled via this process, suggesting a cultural choice.
The distribution of this process of shell perforation corresponds approximately to that of the ivory bracelets.
Thus, a culturally and technically coherent assemblage of Solutrean personal ornaments begins to define
itself. However, the identification of this process in the Fritsch rock shelter site, found further north, puts the
hypothesis of a wider and more global distribution.04312<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Peschaux, Caroline" href="/fez/list/author/Peschaux, Caroline/">Peschaux, Caroline</a> . de las denominadas industrias con piezas de La Bertonne en el seno del Paleolítico superior de Europa
occidental.
In this article we present a overview of current knowledge regarding the chronocultural position of
industries with La Bertonne pieces within the Western European Upper Paleolithic. Initially attributed to
the Aurignacian (Leyssalles and Noone 1949) and then to the Proto-Solutrean (Arambourou 1970), these
industries are now attributed to the Badegoulian due to the association of La Bertonne pieces with one of
the most typical tools of this material culture, the raclette (Lenoir 2000a and b). This association has indeed
been pointed out in several levels at the site of Laugerie-Haute. Est (France, Dordogne), one of which has
been dated to 17040 ± 440 BP (Ly-973; Évin et al. 1976: 80). This is the only available radiocarbon date for
these industries. In addition, the use of pressure flaking, recently identified for the detachment of bladelets
from La Bertonne pieces and to create retouched tools on thin flakes, and the sporadic presence of foliate pieces, are, in our view, elements that these industries share with the Solutrean. They suggest the appearance of La Bertonne industries somewhat earlier than 17000 BP at the transition between the Solutrean and the Badegoulian.05432<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Chehmana, Lucie" href="/fez/list/author/Chehmana, Lucie/">Chehmana, Lucie</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Baumann, Malvina" href="/fez/list/author/Baumann, Malvina/">Baumann, Malvina</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Cretin, Catherine" href="/fez/list/author/Cretin, Catherine/">Cretin, Catherine</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Ferullo, Olivier" href="/fez/list/author/Ferullo, Olivier/">Ferullo, Olivier</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Lenoble, Arnaud" href="/fez/list/author/Lenoble, Arnaud/">Lenoble, Arnaud</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Leroyer, Mathieu" href="/fez/list/author/Leroyer, Mathieu/">Leroyer, Mathieu</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Morala, André" href="/fez/list/author/Morala, André/">Morala, André</a> .
Data obtained by charcoal analysis from Iberian sites are presented in order to improve our knowledge
of the Solutrean flora and consequently of the climatic and edaphic conditions. Published and unpublished
data suggest that refuge areas for thermophilous plants are located south of parallel 40° N. Plants identified
via the identification of charcoal may be divided into four categories representing: temperate / cold conditions,
warm / dry conditions, matorral and riverine habitats. A latitudinal gradient is recognized concerning
the distribution of species associated with warmer conditions, such as Pinus pinea and Rosmarinus officinalis,
while cryophilous pines are present everywhere. Charcoal identification previous to 14C dating should become
a standard practice, making it possible to trace the history of plants and their distribution throughout Iberia.05432<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Badal, Ernestina" href="/fez/list/author/Badal, Ernestina/">Badal, Ernestina</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Carrión, Yolanda" href="/fez/list/author/Carrión, Yolanda/">Carrión, Yolanda</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Figueiral, Isabel" href="/fez/list/author/Figueiral, Isabel/">Figueiral, Isabel</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rodríguez-Ariza, María Oliva" href="/fez/list/author/Rodríguez-Ariza, María Oliva/">Rodríguez-Ariza, María Oliva</a> . superior y medio todavía en estudio.

The sondages have determined the existence of an important Upper and Middle Paleolithic archaeological
sequence, still under study. However, the illegal digging activity in the cave have significantly limited the
possibilities of interpretation of the Solutrean levels. In this paper we present some preliminary results of the
field work, and at the same time, establish a discussion about the value of such records in order to establish
deeper anthropological interpretations. Aspects such as the intensity of the occupation, the diachronic value
of the archaeological record, or the functionality of the site are discussed.05622<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Torres Navas, Concepción" href="/fez/list/author/Torres Navas, Concepción/">Torres Navas, Concepción</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Baena Preysler, Javier" href="/fez/list/author/Baena Preysler, Javier/">Baena Preysler, Javier</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Morgado Rodríguez, Antonio" href="/fez/list/author/Morgado Rodríguez, Antonio/">Morgado Rodríguez, Antonio</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Lozano Rodríguez, José A." href="/fez/list/author/Lozano Rodríguez, José A./">Lozano Rodríguez, José A.</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Alcaraz Castaño, Manuel" href="/fez/list/author/Alcaraz Castaño, Manuel/">Alcaraz Castaño, Manuel</a> .
In the frame of a doctoral dissertation on the Late Glacial Maximum occupations of both sides of the
Rhône valley, this paper presents a state of the art and a critical reappraisal of the lithic assemblages from
the early phases of the Solutrean in Ardeche (right bank of the Rhône river). Indeed, since the works of P.E.L.
Smith and J. Combier, except the work of A. Barbiero, on the unifacial leaf-points and shouldered points from
Baume d’Oullins, no complete study of these assemblages have been conducted. Three key-sites of this early
phase have been tackled: Oullins cave (Gard-Ardèche), Chabot cave (Gard) and Granouly cave (Ardèche).
Here we present the preliminary results of this new study. A typological approach have been first conducted,
especially to precise the main features of the unifacial leaf-points, the most characteristic artefact of this
period. Then a technological approach permited to confirm the homogeneity of the technical choices made
by early Solutrean populations of Ardèche, South-Western France and Paris Basin. Finally, a study of the lithic
raw material shows surprising economical choices, notably material coming from northern regions and from
The archaeological site of Valverde is placed on a slope of the Valverde Mount, near one of the entrances
into the basin of Monforte de Lemos (Lugo, Galicia, Spain). After the finding of a lithic scatter a survey
was carried out in 2007-2009, yielding more than 2400 implements. The lithic assemblage is characterized by
the presence of expedient “chaines operatoires” made on quartz and medium-quality quartzite. On the other hand, blade and microblade blanks are produced on rock crystal and fine-grained quartzite, the latter from outcrops located 8 km to the SW. Although scarce, the use of allochthonous flint is also attested. Based on the reduction sequences identified at the site, and namely, on the presence of broken leaf points, a Solutrean adscription for this assemblage is proposed, therefore becoming the first evidence of LGM settlement in the inner part of NW Iberia.06412<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Lombera Hermida, Arturo de" href="/fez/list/author/Lombera Hermida, Arturo de/">Lombera Hermida, Arturo de</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rodríguez Álvarez, Xose-Pedro" href="/fez/list/author/Rodríguez Álvarez, Xose-Pedro/">Rodríguez Álvarez, Xose-Pedro</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rabuñal Gayo, Xose" href="/fez/list/author/Rabuñal Gayo, Xose/">Rabuñal Gayo, Xose</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Iglesias, Ameijenda" href="/fez/list/author/Iglesias, Ameijenda/">Iglesias, Ameijenda</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Martínez Gómez, Fátima" href="/fez/list/author/Martínez Gómez, Fátima/">Martínez Gómez, Fátima</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Soares Remiseiro, Miguel" href="/fez/list/author/Soares Remiseiro, Miguel/">Soares Remiseiro, Miguel</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Pérez Alberti, Augusto" href="/fez/list/author/Pérez Alberti, Augusto/">Pérez Alberti, Augusto</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Fábregas Valcarce, Ramón" href="/fez/list/author/Fábregas Valcarce, Ramón/">Fábregas Valcarce, Ramón</a> .
The cave of La Griega (Pedraza, Segovia, Spain) is an important site for gaining further knowledge of
prehistoric and Roman societies, with more than 400 engravings preserved inside it. They range in time from
the Solutrean to the 1st Century A.D. The location of the cavity, halfway between the caves and shelters of the
Cantabrian coast and the Mediterranean area, is reflected in the Palaeolithic engraves themselves, as they
show different stylistic influences. In the last few years, as part of an interdisciplinary project, new research
studies have been carried out in this cave, contributing interesting new knowledge, both on the geological
and the archaeological levels. Furthermore, the application of new geotechonologies —three dimensions
(3D) Laser Scanner and three dimensions (3D) Restitution— and the performance of a virtual flight have allowed
us to improve substantially the documenting of prehistoric art, analysis of the surroundings and the
management of archaeological heritage.06682<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Corchón, M.ª Soledad" href="/fez/list/author/Corchón, M.ª Soledad/">Corchón, M.ª Soledad</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Ortega, Paula" href="/fez/list/author/Ortega, Paula/">Ortega, Paula</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for González Aguilera, Diego" href="/fez/list/author/González Aguilera, Diego/">González Aguilera, Diego</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Muñoz, Ángel" href="/fez/list/author/Muñoz, Ángel/">Muñoz, Ángel</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rodríguez, Pablo" href="/fez/list/author/Rodríguez, Pablo/">Rodríguez, Pablo</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Gárate, Diego" href="/fez/list/author/Gárate, Diego/">Gárate, Diego</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rivero, Olivia" href="/fez/list/author/Rivero, Olivia/">Rivero, Olivia</a> .
amphibius, Microtus (Microtus) agrestis, Microtus (Microtus) arvalis, Microtus (Alexandromys) oeconomus,
Chionomys nivalis, Microtus (Terricola) sp., Apodemus sylvaticus-flavicollis) y tres al Orden Eulipotyphla
(Sorex) minutus, Sorex araneus-coronatus, Talpa sp.).
In this article, the small mammal assemblage contemporary to the Solutrean age from the paleontological
site of Kiputz IX cave (Mutriku, Gipuzkoa, Spain) is described. The good preservation of bones and
the application of latest micropaleontological techniques allow a paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the
period analyzed. Small mammals are represented in the site by ten taxa, seven belonging to the Orden Rodentia
(Arvicola amphibius, Microtus (Microtus) agrestis, Microtus (Microtus) arvalis, Microtus (Alexandromys)

the Orden Eulipotyphla Sorex minutus, Sorex araneus-coronatus, Talpa sp.). The environmental variations
estimated on the basis of the micromammal association, suggested that the weather in the moment of the
assemblage’s formation would be colder than the one occurring in the area at the present day. The humidity
also could be higher than the current one.05152<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for García-Ibaibarriaga, Naroa" href="/fez/list/author/García-Ibaibarriaga, Naroa/">García-Ibaibarriaga, Naroa</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Murelaga, Xabier" href="/fez/list/author/Murelaga, Xabier/">Murelaga, Xabier</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rofes, Juan" href="/fez/list/author/Rofes, Juan/">Rofes, Juan</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Castaños, Pedro" href="/fez/list/author/Castaños, Pedro/">Castaños, Pedro</a> . fauniques issus des couches solutréennes.
Several hundred faunal remains were discovered since 2005 in the Solutrean‘s level at Rochefort cave
(Mayenne, France). Reindeer and Horse are the main taxa identified and are the baseline of the Solutrean diet.
We present here the preliminary results of the faunal analysis and discuss the exploitation of these two main
taxa. A number of refits were possible. At the same time, the exceptional preservation of the artefacts together
with well-defined cut marks allows to reconstruct procurement and use patterns of these animals as
well as the season they were killed. Recently excavated and analysed Solutrean faunal assemblages are rare
which make the yet unreported Rochefort cave faunal assemblage even more important and unprecedented.05752<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Bemilli, Céline" href="/fez/list/author/Bemilli, Céline/">Bemilli, Céline</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Hinguant, Stéphan" href="/fez/list/author/Hinguant, Stéphan/">Hinguant, Stéphan</a> . de la Península Ibérica que presenta una secuencia estratigráfica en la que se han excavado tres unidades
que precede al último Máximo Glacial (GS 2).La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain) is located in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula.
It is a karstic cavity with rock shelter morphology that contains a stratigraphic sequence composed of
three sedimentary units with Solutrean materials. In this work we study the sequence from the geoarchaeological
and chronostratigraphical perspective. The geoarchaeological study has allowed us to distinguish two
litostratigraphic units, the lower generated by a mud flow and the upper formed by gelifraction processes
which contains the Solutrean occupations. The last radiocarbon dates from the Solutrean of La Cueva de
Ambrosio allow the clarification of its position in the Upper Pleistocene chronostratigraphic scale. The calibration
of the new 14C dates from the level IV (Upper Solutrean) and the level II (Upper Evolved Solutrean),
can place these moments between the end of GS 3 (end of OIS 3) and the end of GI 2, with an important
occupation event (level II) in the aftermath of the Heinrich Event H-2, coinciding with the interstadial that
preceding the Last Glacial Maximum (GS 2).06942<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Jordá Pardo, Jesús F." href="/fez/list/author/Jordá Pardo, Jesús F./">Jordá Pardo, Jesús F.</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Carral López, Pilar" href="/fez/list/author/Carral López, Pilar/">Carral López, Pilar</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Ripoll López, Sergio" href="/fez/list/author/Ripoll López, Sergio/">Ripoll López, Sergio</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J." href="/fez/list/author/Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J./">Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J.</a> .
The vast Aterian civilization occupied the entire area of the modern Sahara, between the Nile, the
Senegal and the Maghreb during tens of thousands of years. Its tools are well known, which tend to become
smaller and lighter during the later phases in the Northwest (modern Morocco). Rigorously Paleolithic art is
now known from this period in Upper Egypt, dating prior to 23,000 BP (Huyge 2013). Its stylistic patterns are
identical to those of rare sites attributed to definitive Solutrean in Iberia, specifically when bifacial industries
arrived as the «Middle Solutrean». The Proto-Solutrean phases grouped under this term in fact belong
to Gravettian variants coming from Central Europe and were incorrectly interpreted. During its European
expansion, the Solutrean creates a clear break in the prehistory of Europe. Limited in its extremely western
part, it rapidly disappeared when the last Gravettians adopted ways of life and values leading to the expansion
and development of the Magdalenian.05662<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Otte, Marcel" href="/fez/list/author/Otte, Marcel/">Otte, Marcel</a> . geográficos, cronológicos y formales, una cuestión aún por resolver.
The transition between the end of the Gravettian and the beginning of the Solutrean in the Iberian Peninsula

the Iberian Peninsula. For this purpose, we have collected all the dates from this chronology and we have connected
them with the archaeological data (mainly, industrial assemblages). This raw data has been modeled
with the software OxCal 4.1.7. The chronological framework allows us to define the Solutrean lower limits
and the upper limits of the Gravettian, and the relationship between both phases. In addition, we considered
the general overview of this period from a chronological perspective, keeping in mind the developments made
The archaeological site of Las Delicias (Madrid, Spain) is known since the excavation conducted at
the location by H. Obermaier and P. Wernert in the late 1917. It has been one of the classical references
for the Palaeolithic of the Madrid region, despite the varied interpretations that have been posited to explain
its problematic lithic assemblage. Following a historiographical analysis of the site’s interpretations,
we present the results of a research project initiated in the winter of 2008. This project was centered in the
excavation of part of the quaternary deposits still present in the area, and its main objective was to gain a
better geoarchaeological understanding of the site in order to solve the questions that it has traditionally
posed to the discipline. The technological analysis of the lithics, together with the lithological and geomorphological
analysis of the deposit, allows us to place Las Delicias in the Solutrean period. Thus, besides some isolated finds, this site becomes the only one in the Manzanares area containing Solutrean industries in a well-defined stratigraphic position and excavated with modern methods. We make some reflections on the implications of our findings for the discussion on the human settlement of Central Iberia during the middle part of the Upper Palaeolithic.06632<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Alcaraz-Castaño, Manuel" href="/fez/list/author/Alcaraz-Castaño, Manuel/">Alcaraz-Castaño, Manuel</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for López-Recio, Mario" href="/fez/list/author/López-Recio, Mario/">López-Recio, Mario</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Roca, Marta" href="/fez/list/author/Roca, Marta/">Roca, Marta</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Tapias, Fernando" href="/fez/list/author/Tapias, Fernando/">Tapias, Fernando</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Rus, Inmaculada" href="/fez/list/author/Rus, Inmaculada/">Rus, Inmaculada</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Baena, Javier" href="/fez/list/author/Baena, Javier/">Baena, Javier</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Morín, Jorge" href="/fez/list/author/Morín, Jorge/">Morín, Jorge</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Pérez-González, Alfredo" href="/fez/list/author/Pérez-González, Alfredo/">Pérez-González, Alfredo</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Santonja, Manuel" href="/fez/list/author/Santonja, Manuel/">Santonja, Manuel</a> .
no interpretados.
In the solutrean site of La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain) several engraved and
painted figures dated on the Upper Palaeolithic, have been found during the field works of 1992 and 1994.
In The panel I we have identified an excellent representation of a horse, a bird, one bovidae and another
protome of a horse. Below this surface there are many red ochre wall paintings covered by a calcitic speleotheme
and for the time being we are unable to give any interpretation for it. In the second panel we have
discovered more tone splendid red painted horse, two more enngraved horses and a little head of one other
black painted horse. There are many engraved lines and pictural rests that must be studied in the future.
The exceptionality of this discovery is that we can interrelate perfectly these rock art paintings with the
archaeological levels clearly defined chronologically and culturally (ca. 20000 BP), Middle Solutrean and
Upper Solutrean from the same site.07042<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Ripoll López, Sergio" href="/fez/list/author/Ripoll López, Sergio/">Ripoll López, Sergio</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J." href="/fez/list/author/Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J./">Muñoz Ibáñez, Francisco J.</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Jordá Pardo, Jesús F." href="/fez/list/author/Jordá Pardo, Jesús F./">Jordá Pardo, Jesús F.</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Martín Lerma, Ignacio" href="/fez/list/author/Martín Lerma, Ignacio/">Martín Lerma, Ignacio</a> .
A partir
Barbed and tanged points (BTP) are one of the specific elements which characterize extracantabrian
Solutrean. This type of projectile points are characterized from morphological and typometrical parameters.
A model is proposed to explain the manufacturing processes and their effect on the archaeological record.
From analysis of the BTP are established the ballistics characteristic of this type of tool kit. Its morphology
contributes to fix the hypothesis that its possible function can be arrowheads propelled by a bow. The results
show that BTP are morphologically and metric well suited to be thrown by a bow. The replicas had a perfect
ballistic behaviour, so we can think that the origin of bow can be earlier than traditionally thought.05862<a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Javier Muñoz, Francisco" href="/fez/list/author/Javier Muñoz, Francisco/">Javier Muñoz, Francisco</a>, <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Márquez Mora, Belén" href="/fez/list/author/Márquez Mora, Belén/">Márquez Mora, Belén</a> and <a class="citation_author_name" title="Browse by Author Name for Ripoll López, Sergio" href="/fez/list/author/Ripoll López, Sergio/">Ripoll López, Sergio</a> .
The scientific use of 3D models every day has more heyday in archaeology. Archaeology and information
technologies have turned in the latter years into a big binomial. Now then, the archaeological models
in 3D are not simple virtual recreations, but they must always fit to scientific criteria. Inside the world of
the archaeological models in 3D, we center in the field of the GIS or Geographical information Systems and
in the achievement of the solutrean stratigraphy of La Lluera caves (Asturias, Spain). We raise the making
of the solutrean stratigraphy of the above mentioned cave like an interactive process of restitution of
the archaeological reality, data validation and simulation. Thanks to the above mentioned process, whose
outcome is the realization by GIS a solutrean stratigraphy, see what GIS are the appropriate tool to address
