Dick’s "The Man in the High Castle", Len Deighton’s SS-GB and their television adaptationsbibliuned:master-Filologia-ELyCIyPS-AsarasuaIn spite of being a literary genre that has its basis on questioning the consequences of modifying the outcome of a given historical event — an activity that has traditionally been performed since antiquity —, alternate history was not properly defined as such until the mid-1990s, having finally achieved a mainstream status as of the second decade of the 21st century thanks to the popularization of various television adaptations that have alternate history narratives as their source. These novels and their adaptations make display of an ability to portray the way in which the historical events they alter are shaped within the human mind as well as how they are perceived in collective memory. Consequently, the purpose behind this master’s dissertation is to analyse the aforementioned ability in two alternate history novels that have received their own television adaptation in recent years, namely Philip K. Dick’s The Man in the High Castle (1962) and Len Deighton’s SS-GB (1978), as well as to study the evolution of the public perception of the historical event that both share as the focus of their divergence in their original narratives and their modern television counterparts: a Nazi victory in World War II. After introducing the essential theoretical framework behind the literary genre, this dissertation will proceed to analyse Dick’s The Man in the High Castle, focusing on the features that identify it as an alternate history like the rupture of linear time and the reflection upon themes such as necessity, determinism and human agency, to then continue towards its connections with real-world history and the study of the normalization of the traumatic past while placing special attention on how its recent television adaptation has impacted on such process. Immediately afterwards, the same procedure will be applied to Deighton’s SS-GB and its corresponding television series. Finally, the conclusions of this dissertation will highlight the process of normalization as an ongoing matter of discussion that is definitely enriched by new audiovisual adaptations, as well as alternate history’s resourceful nature, that will likely guarantee its continuity as a genre regardless of the medium in which it is produced.0Doctoral Thesis6752Sarasúa Gutiérrez, Alexia. Yet anthologies usually are accompanied by prefaces written by the editor where the rationale is justified. Thus, the prefaces of some of the most relevant anthologies of the 20th and 21st centuries, such as the three editions of The Oxford Book of English Verse or The Norton Anthology of Poetry, have been analysed to inductively extract the main constituting elements of anthologies. These are the language in which poems are written, the literary tradition and national boundaries taken into account, the genre of the poems, the historical or authorial chronological order, the aim, function, and anthology of translations El gran vent i les heures differs from the analysed anthologies in that, according to the Catalan anthologist, it does not try to choose a representative sample of a tradition; it is a personal anthology that does not aim at being systematic (Manent, El gran vent 12; emphasis added). Nonetheless, a detailed study of the anthology leads to the opposite conclusion that it is indeed a systematic anthology imagery which synthesises the ideas of the previous critics, El gran vent is said to be actually systematic and organised according to four archetypal categories, namely nature as Eden, death as the great equaliser, love as unity, and war as conflict, and a fifth category of poems s argument that El gran vent might be translator, poet, critic, and anthologist0Doctoral Thesis3602Granell Sales, Carles. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall continúan siendo realmente insuficientes. After all, her feminist revisionist poems defy phallogocentrism and the ubiquity of male discourse by endowing fictional female characters with speech and agency. However, this poetic collection has never been explored in relation to Plato‟s theory of Forms. This study brings the mythological poems of The World’s Wife into sharp focus to evidence that Duffy provides a feminist portrayal of what Plato deemed as “immanent universals.” This Master‟s dissertation seeks to analyse four mythological poems from this poetic corpus through the lens of Plato‟s theory of Forms in order to prove that the author not only subverts the myth –which was supposed to be a solid and fixed discourse– but also illustrates the Forms of Disappointment, Beauty, Power and Love from a feminist perspective, thus overthrowing deeply ingrained beliefs about the way we conceive these ideas and emotions. In order to prove how the author illustrates Plato‟s immanent universals differently, I have examined in each poem its poetic language coupled with the relationship between a particular Form and its manifestation into the material world. To begin with, gold will be explored in “Mrs. Midas” to portray a feminine perspective on the Form of Disappointment. Secondly, the Platonic Form of Beauty in “Medusa” and its representation into the sensible particulars of snakes is explored to convey a different perspective of Beauty. Thirdly, the statue as a material representation is studied in “Pygmalion‟s Bride” to portray how Duffy subverts the hegemonic male view of the Form of Power. Finally, Love is the last Platonic Form to be analysed in “Demeter,” which is depicted by natural elements to introduce maternal love as the purest Love of all. By and large, these four polyphonic poems counterattack the father-controlled language discourse by offering an alternative vision of these universal concepts. These paradigms have been traditionally defined according to the hegemonic male gaze and Duffy evidences that these idiosyncratic cornerstones are questioned when analysed from a feminist perspective. Since the dawn of feminism our interpretation of the world has inevitably undergone a metamorphosis and Duffy is an outstanding proof of how our contemporary world questions some „universal truths.‟0Doctoral Thesis8922Ramos Gracia, Samanta. Dystopian literature and Science Fiction offer the best ways to address imaginatively issues such as control and surveillance of population, stratification of citizens, destruction of nature, suppression of women‟s rights and the use of Techno-science by governments as a tool for enforcing oppression and for perpetuating their power. To cover a wide range of examples, I have included five novels and three films that have a significant impact on the ways in which we envisage a “near future” classified in Totalitarian, Biologically Based, Post-Apocalyptic, Feminist and Cyberpunk dystopias. They depict nightmarish communities with a distancing perspective to provide us compelling warnings about forthcoming dangers as these stories seem to be part of our own experience. This work concludes that their authors have included a socio-political commentary on the dominant preoccupations and anxieties of their age which we can extrapolate to our socio-political environment. I argue for the need to create more stories conveying cautionary messages about potential threats to humankind and to increase research into such topics to confront future challenges.0Doctoral Thesis5822Caballero Vargas, Isabel. Echoes of Interwar British Music in Works of J.B. Priestleybibliuned:master-Filologia-ELyCIyPS-MirebolloJ.B. Priestley was a prolific writer over a long life as well as a multi-faceted personality. In recent years, studies have focused on his time plays, his views on politics, Englishness and on national identity, but seldom on Priestley’s close connections with and involvement in the world of music, which intersected with his literary writing on so many occasions. The aim of this essay is to offer an analysis of Priestley’s employment of music as a literary device enhancing both his works’ entertainment value and the social messages carried by his plays and novels produced during the interwar and post-Second World War years. A special focus is applied to two pivotal works in this respect: the novel The Good Companions (1929) and the play Music at Night (1938). Furthermore, since recent decades have seen the appearance of studies in intermediality of music and literature, this dissertation will explore the theories of Wolf and Scher, and how they may apply to Priestley’s works. The whole is set within the cultural scene of 1918 to 1939 and into the Second World War, in particular the genres of popular music and other forms of popular entertainment, and classical music.0Doctoral Thesis582Rebollo Calvo, María Isabel. By examining ten songs that span his early beginnings in Greenwich Village to his becoming the recipient of the Nobel Prize, influences that include such disparate figures as Allen Ginsberg, Arthur Rimbaud, homer, Ovid and Virgil are detailed. The thesis is divided into three main sections. First, Dylan’s emergence as a folk singer with his so-called protest songs in the early 1960s; second, his conversion to Evangelism in the 1970s and the influence of Christianity; and third, the period encompassing the turn of century when he drew upon Greco-Roman founts. My hypothesis is that Dylan’s use of sources from other authors is a way of enriching his work and follows a time-honoured tradition of borrowing rather than mere plagiarism or simple appropriation.0Doctoral Thesis5122Sarasola Ormazábal, María Arantzazu. The main thesis of this research is to reveal whether Chinese American identity has evolved from the 1970s to nowadays, and discuss the factors which may have an influence on how Chinese Americans perceive themselves. The main two factors considered are the changing social environment within the United States in terms of race (internal dynamics); and the economic development and growing international influence of the People’s Republic of China (external dynamics). To this aim, I will address relevant concepts such as Gloria Andaldúa’s ‘border theory’ and Homi Bhabha’s ‘hybridity’, in order to position a third role within the ethnic black/white, minority/majority establishment. The State of the Art will introduce relevant research on Chinese American identity and Postcolonial theory. Ling-chi Wang will provide the theoretical framework through which to analyze some of the different stages in the development of Chinese American identity. Julia Lee and Bella Adam’s work on Maxine Hong Kingston’s oeuvre will be the basis to explore the themes discussed in The Woman Warrior as well as the historical and literary context in the second chapter. Finally, in the third chapter, I will present some contemporary examples of Chinese American identity in the United States media (film and stand-up comedy), and another set of examples of how the Chinese Diaspora is perceived in China. To conclude, I will briefly discuss how the Chinese Spanish identity is now emerging as a new reality. This study aims to show how Chinese American hybridity was a third pole within the white and black racial binary opposition, and how Chinese American identity evolves with the internal social dynamics within the United States, alongside the external fluctuation of China-U.S. relations; and aims to understand how modern Chinese Americans navigate their hybrid identity and perceive themselves in comparison to Kingston’s exploration of identity.0Doctoral Thesis4382Román García, Javier. Even though indigenous cultures trace back further than the Neolithic period, the European colonisation brought about a threat to their way of life, traditions and culture; a threat that was later perpetuated in literature by means of the use of stereotypes and inaccurate misrepresentations, which, in turn, had a great influence on popular culture and, especially, on video games. The aim of this paper is to analyse how video games reinforce racial stereotypes, and how they can also be used to subvert such oversimplified conventions. The first section of this master’s thesis will briefly examine Native American history in order to contextualize the indigenous identity so as to reach a better understanding of the struggles Native Americans had to go through in colonial times exploring the assimilation and acculturation process they endured. We will continue to analyse how the Native American’s portrayal shifts from reality in literature for political or entertainment reasons, with the appearance of racial stereotypes in literary texts, ranging from Columbus’ letters and captivity novels to children’s and contemporary fiction, with the subsequent film adaptations, such as Peter Pan or the Twilight saga. We will continue to analyse how the oversimplified conventions of the noble savage, the great warrior, the spiritual shaman and the pan-Indian construct created by mainstream white society gain strength in video games, providing a justification of the importance of video games within popular culture as an industry that reaches millions of people around the world which has a powerful potential to raise racial awareness but not always accounts for racial diversity and tolerance, as seen in successful franchises such as Street Fighter or Tekken. Titles like Never Alone and Assassin’s Creed III, however, make use of this potential by means of faithful Native American portrayals. To conclude, we will ascertain that, despite the high number of Native American misrepresentations in the industry, video games can help subvert racial issues, promoting diversity, equality and tolerance, which can be achieved by means of a racially inclusive and collaborative game creation process.0Doctoral Thesis11922Martínez Linares, Samuel. The major purpose of the research is to uncover, explain and illustrate the type of violence which lies behind Jackson’s Female Gothic, a violence suffered by women because of their female condition and invisible due to its naturalisation and its dissolution under the spell of the feminine mystique. Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence as the kind of surreptitious violence exercised through everyday actions permeates Jackson’s Female Gothic. This genre, which has been traditionally used to defy the hegemonic patriarchal discourse, is used by the author to highlight the terrifying about the ordinary and to expose the oppression felt by the middle-class woman of the 40s and 50s. With this aim, Jackson draws on classic conventions, which she adapts to the context of the post-war America, where women’s fulfilment was defined by the feminine mystique which Betty Friedan exposed years later. However, she also creates new ones, such as the trope of the demon lover, recurrent in Jackson’s fiction. This thesis analyses the use of the tropes and connects them to the notion of symbolic violence proposed by Bourdieu. In the works analysed, this violence has been recognised as mockery, belittling, disregard, denigration, silencing, complicity, condescension, value judgements, social pressure and even metaphorical killing through erasure. In addition to Bourdieu’s principles, Marie-France Hirigoyen’s paradigm about psychological violence have been employed to illustrate the inclusion of this type of violence in some of the tales. Finally, all the female characters are divided according to their reactions to masculine domination. In one group, the protagonists accept their role and the consequent passivity and submission. The alternative response is to live outside the symbolic order in a permanent distressful state. However, whichever path they take, all of them are portrayed by Jackson in a final state of alienation and anxiety.0Doctoral Thesis4572Isidro Olavarrieta, María de. It is from the combination of those two that this work came to be. Such personal interest was reinforced by the fairly considerable amount of biopics and biographies about those women that have multiplied in the last years. Works like The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2020) or Bessie (2015) show the strength and courage of singers like Billie Holiday or Bessie Smith, but also the brutality that those women suffered within their romantic relationships and within a racist context. Those pieces also claim that those women and their legacy are relevant.0Doctoral Thesis2992Garcia Lopez, Ane. Not only did the book challenge the established order of the 1980s politics, but it did also cast light on the fatal consequences of instituting a deeply religious authoritarian regime. In 2017, the book made the leap to Hulu, an online series broadcasting service, which provoked the story to become available to millions of viewers. The novel and the TV series have become internationally acclaimed by the feminisms of the 21st century. The aim of this Master’s dissertation is to analyse the particularities of Ronald Reagan’s and Donald Trump’s political measures while, at the same time, connecting the findings to correlating events in the novel and the series, respectively. In order to carry out this analysis I will first proceed to discuss the interplay of women, power and violence in Atwood’s literary production to establish the fundamental grounds around which this paper will revolve. Once the theoretical foundations are provided, I will examine the novel in detail supporting my analysis with Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish and Pierre Bourdieu’s Masculine Domination. Subsequently, I intend to connect my findings with the main political events under Regan’s administration; in particular, focus will be placed upon the issue of abortion and women’s agency over their own bodies. Later on, I comment on the TV series peculiarities in order to cast light upon the events currently unfolding under Donald Trump’s administration. Finally, I shall compare Reagan’s and Trump’s administration in the quest for similarities between their political agendas, while, of course, linking my discoveries to specific events in both the novel and the TV series.0Doctoral Thesis7452Aldekogarai Zubia, Irati. Focusing on an Anglo-Irish Victorian novel, Edith Somerville and Martin Ross’s The Real Charlotte (1894), and a post-Second-World-War English novel, Barbara Pym’s Excellent Women (1952), this study explores how unmarried women were portrayed in literature and what stereotypes were associated with them. By analysing the novels within their historical and sociocultural contexts, the paper aims to illustrate how societal expectations and gender norms influenced the lives of spinsters. This study follows a feminist approach to literature, exploring the experiences of unmarried women in terms of identity, agency, social acceptance or rejection, and adherence or challenge to traditional notions of womanhood. The analysis of the main characters of The Real Charlotte and Excellent Women, Charlotte Mullen and Mildred Lathbury, identifies common themes in the portrayal of spinsters, such as social isolation, self-reliance, pressure to marry, and subversion of traditional gender roles. This paper also aims to determine whether negative stereotypes of and prejudices against the spinster remained in the mid-twentieth century, at a time where women had achieved more rights and independence than they had had sixty years before. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the broader understanding of gender roles, stereotypes, and dynamics in literature, as well as the construction of one’s identity through social conventions and expectations.0Doctoral Thesis1202Novo Raposo, Julia María. The series went on to win multiple awards, and received rave reviews, among them that of the New Yorker critic Jia Tolentino, who pointed out that the villanelle was a type of poetry. The objective of this paper is to examine the villanelle fixed-form poem and follow its evolution from the point when it entered English poetry in the late 19th century until the present, asking whether the villanelle reflects the changes that poetry itself has undergone during this nearly 140-year period. It also aims to deconstruct the poem’s metatextuality, intertextuality and intermediality by examining key villanelles, in an attempt to give an overview of how this short poem encapsulates and reflects many theories which are current in modern literary studies.0Doctoral Thesis7842Ryan, Catherine Ann. And the world is full of people running about with lit matches: Censoring Books with Queer characters under Trump’s Administrationbibliuned:master-Filologia-ELyCIyPS-JmromarisSince 1990 the American Library Association (ALA) has been publishing a list of ‘challenged or censored’ books in libraries and schools in the US. In the last years, the topic that has increased the most as the main reason to censor a book has been that the books contain Queer characters and plots, reason that has risen to disturbing levels until being the main one in eight of the ten books of the ALA’s list in 2019. This research analyses the most representative books of that list to find out the possible reasons these books are being censored; along with who is behind this censorship, if the censorship of Queer materials extends to other fields, the social and psychological consequences caused by it, and some possible ways out of that situation. The research suggests that the fact that they contain Queer characters and plots is the only reason those books are being challenged, although they do not even defy the binary system of the Heterosexual Matrix. This censorship seems to have been promoted by conservatives, especially under Trump’s Administration and their ideological and socio-cultural milieu in the last years. It is socially disruptive, psychologically problematic for young people, and encourages bullying in schools. It also seems at least partly responsible for the increase in suicides among the Queer young population. The data also suggest that censorship of Queer material extends to other fields, such as education (especially in History), legislation (especially in education issues), animated films, and the Internet.0Doctoral Thesis5752Romarís Cercós, Jose Manuel. By examining a selection of Coyote stories by Thomas King, a novel by Gerald Vizenor and a novel by Maxine Hong Kingston, and the ways they adapt their mythical Tricksters reinscribing them in a contemporary setting, and the way these writers juggle with words and meanings, I hope to further reveal their intentions to resist and contest hegemonic dominance. This thesis is divided into three main sections. First, the concept of Trickster as a mythological and universal archetype; second, the different deployments of this figure in contemporary Native literature, and third how it is treated in Chinese American literatures. My thesis is that literary tricksters articulate the anxieties Native peoples and Chinese migrant communities experience in the United States and Canada, calling for them to rewrite their history and reject the assigned (mis)representation through humor.0Doctoral Thesis6912Shan Núñez, Leila María. This study analyses and compares the first full translation (conducted by Manuel de la Escalera and published by Destino in 1966), its revision by Laura Sandoval for Hoja de Lata publishers in 2015, and a partial translation performed in 2015 by the author of the present disssertation for his degree’s final year project. The analysis is restricted to the first two chapters of the book (although other parts, as well as the book as a whole, are brought into play when opportune), and finds its theoretical framework in the De Beaugrand and Dressler’s seven standards of textuality, with an emphasis on the different approaches used by the translators due to the different contexts in which they worked. Additionally, the use of footnotes in all three versions is analysed – drawing on its characterisation by Gerard Genette as well as on Vicente Marrero Pulido’s classification– and the figure of Manuel de la Escalera is delved into, given the relevance of his biography as a political prisoner and as a literary author. His example is a clear illustration of how the personal circumstances and the socio-political context of translators can have a direct influence on their work.0Doctoral Thesis5492Turégano Acosta, Víctor. In the course of the narrative, Antoinette feels different degrees of attachment to Dominica‟s natural world as she undergoes an evolution in her Creole consciousness, and she reflects such a link with the landscape through memory retrieval. Although scholars such as Jessica Gildersleeve or Sandra Paquet have explored the relationship between character and place in the novel, none of them have provided an in-depth analysis of how Antoinette‟s interaction with Caribbean landscape reflects an evolution in the formation of her Creole identity throughout the narrative. Therefore, the main aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate that there is a close relationship between Caribbean landscape and the evolution in Antoinette‟s identity formation as a Creole. As regards methodology, I have used memory studies through a narratological analysis. This approach is aimed at identifying how Antoinette recalls both certain events belonging to her past and her interaction with Dominica‟s landscape at different stages of her Creole consciousness. Accordingly, this piece of research will devote one chapter to each one of the sections into which the novel is divided: part I deals with Antoinette‟s sense of alienation stemming from the attacks inflicted by Dominican blacks; part II revolves around the Creole‟s growing identification with her native place as her husband feels at odds with the natural world of the island; finally, part III takes place in the English attic where Antoinette has been incarcerated, and the subtle references to Dominica‟s landscape in this section contribute to enhancing that the Creole favours her Caribbean side to the detriment of her British lineage. As for results, it has been found that Antoinette‟s interaction with the Caribbean natural world mirrors an evolution in her Creole consciousness. Indeed, she is afraid of the landscape in the first part of the novel, while she eventually grows more attached to it when she marries an English man. By examining the relationship between identity formation and Caribbean landscape, this dissertation attempts to widen the bulk of literature on the retrieval of memory in Jean Rhys‟s fiction while casting new light on the paramount role of the Caribbean landscape in Wide Sargasso Sea.0Doctoral Thesis9562Nadal Ruiz, Alejandro.
