Historia
Abstract
Born in a very consen/ative and catholic family, Paul Nothomb will be soon an active member of the Belgium Communist Party and will fight in Spain, in the squadrons organized by André Malraux, from september 1936 to february 1937. Back to Belgium in may 1937, the former «political commissionner» of the French writer will continue fighting in faveur of democracy and of the Spanish Republic; from the columns of the communist newspaper La Voix du Peuple, he will denounce the reactionary mesures adopted by his government against the former combattants in Spain and aiso the cowardice and hypocresy of the European democracies responsable of the non intervention politics. The testimonies writen at this time but aIso fifty years later by Paul Nothomb —banished by the BCP for having betrayed his résistance comrades under effect ofa Logical delirium— make up obviousiy an essential source in order to understand the spanish commitment, often controversial, of the author of The Hope.
