Abstract
A Spanish-German enterprise: Ortega y Gasset’s Gesammelte Werke (1954-1956) Between 1949 and 1955, José Ortega y Gasset spent long periods in the Bundesrepublik Deutschland lecturing and supervising the publication of his essays and books. Ortega’s relationship with the Germanic world dates back to his contacts with neo-Kantianism and phenomenology during his university days in Marburg and Berlin before the First World War. The translation of his works in German was initiated in the second half of the 1920s by Helene Weyl, his first and enthusiastic translator, and culminated in the Gesammelte Werke in four volumes, of which Ortega himself was able to review the first two, published in 1954 and 1955. Our research describes Ortega’s presence in Germany in the early 1950s, paying special attention to the documents preserved in Ortega’s documentary heritage, regarding the edition of the collected works and their translation into German.
